Night at the Theatre: Dear Liar Thursday, June 30, 7:30 pm Salishan Spa and Golf Resort (tickets $25) Buy tickets
There could hardly have been two people who seemed less likely to be attracted to each other than George Bernard Shaw and the actress known as Mrs. Patrick Campbell. Their paths crossed, with “Mrs. Pat” appearing bewitchingly on the stage and George Bernard Shaw reviewing her performances as he says, enchanted, in the audience. Their often contentious but fiercely devoted platonic love affair is dramatized through a reading of their fortyyear correspondence. Here is Shaw in all his contradictions; he adores Mrs. Pat, most ascetically, and persuades her to play in Pygmalion. He frets with her when she leaves for America, and yet he refuses permission to publish the letters that would save her from bankruptcy. Mrs. Campbellthe original “Eliza Doolittle,” whose talent and dark eyed beauty kept her in demandis his match; she published them anyway.

Irving Berlin (18881989) is one of the most famous, prolific and enduring songwriters of the 20th century. “God Bless America,” “There’s No Business Like Show Business,” “White Christmas,” and “Blue Skies” are just a short sampling of the more than 1000 songs Irving Berlin wrote during his long career. And nearly 90 years later these songs are all still popular. He had a scandalous courtship in the early 1920’s. Berlin, a 36yearold immigrant Jew from Belarus, Russia and the Ellin Mackay, a 21yearold daughter of a socially prominent IrishAmerican Catholic family, granddaughter of a silver magnate and one of the richest men in America fell in love. Come see our show to find out the ending!
