A note from the Director… “It’s bad enough that people are dying
of AIDS, but no one should die of
ignorance.”
-Elizabeth Taylor
While choosing our 2019-20 season for INNOVAtheatre, I contemplated a variety of
shows, trying to find one that would make a
powerful statement through a moving, life-changing
story.
While considering Quilt- A Musical Celebration, at first, I struggled with the risk of a show that
is rarely produced. Could it still have the same strong impact on today’s society as it did when it
was performed for the first time? Could its relevancy still be intimately profound? I chose to risk
bringing the characters in Quilt alive on the stage, because this show is so much more than a piece
of musical theatre. It is the true stories of those that have gone on before us: the lives it has
affected, the families it has torn apart, the clergy who continue to shun it, the suicides resulting
out of the stigma it still carries. In some way, each of you have either come into contact with this
disease, or you have been affected indirectly. You just don’t realize it.
Even with preventative medications available, the number of those infected with HIV
continues to grow daily. An average of 38,739 people receive an HIV diagnosis in the United
States every year. This is equivalent to 106 people daily, and approximately 15% (or 1 in 7) of the
estimated 1.1 million people with HIV in the U.S. don’t know they are infected.
Although HIV/AIDS is no longer the death sentence it was in the 1980s and 90s, it is still
killing… In 2018, an estimated 770,000 people died from AIDS-related illnesses
worldwide. That is in comparison to 1.2 million in 2010 and 1.7 million in 2004. Medication can
help slow down the disease, but there still is no cure. Medications are extremely expensive and
average $3500.00 for a thirty-day supply.
One of the most powerful lines from the show resonates in my mind daily is, “Legislate,
Appropriate, Coordinate and EDUCATE!” We must educate ALL of our society, including our
children, about HIV, what it is, what it can do, and what it has already done to millions of people.
Then, and only then will we be able to eradicate this virus.
I ask nothing more of you than to listen to the words of the songs and the stories of the people
before you. Know that it may not be 1989, but it is 2019, and the stories are the same stories in our
lives and around the world today, but just with different names and in different places.
Maybe you are in some way Mrs. Polaski, or Vernon DuPace, or even Wes. Listen with your
eyes, see with your ears… What if? Why? Why not? It is my hope that you leave here today with a
better understanding of this life-threatening disease as well as a deeper emotional connection to
what it means to be affected either directly or indirectly by it. Love fiercely, believe with your
whole heart, fully engage in a life that doesn't come with guarantees- these are risks; risks that
involve being vulnerable and often bring pain, but they are well worth the unconditional love that
can follow for anyone. I have sat at the bedside of friends who no longer have voices because of
this disease. Go and be their voices, be that one voice that makes a difference.
Richard Lee Waldeck

QUILT FACTS Nearly 30 years ago a group of strangers gathered in a San Francisco storefront
to remember the names… of their loved ones they feared history would forget –
and with that seemingly simple act of love and defiance, the first panels of The
Quilt were created. That same year those first memorials began to travel the
nation and in October of 1987, they were display alongside 1,920 other Quilt
panels on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. – making it impossible for the
