Synchrophasor Project Deliverables*

A method for establishing and maintaining a reliable synchrophasor network to provide real-time dynamic information on large-scale wind resources and their impact on the transmission grid

The use of synchrophasor measurements to identify precursor conditions to undesirable grid performance and behavior, or to grid interruptions

Defining the value of the demonstration in replicating and transferring lessons learned for wind dynamics monitoring and management to other parts of the U.S.

Detail on EPG Planned Activities in Support of ERCOT

Analysis and validation of PMU communications network and data – to make data “Production Grade”

– Validate data accuracy– Evaluate quality and reliability of phasor data– Assess causes of data loss/data error– Develop phasor data performance standards and monitoring tools

Perform baseline analysis of phasor data to establish alarm limits for RTDMS– Identify normal and extreme operational characteristics– Recommend angle-pair alarm limits for safe operations– Develop recommended mitigation measures to reduce system stress to safe levels

Perform post-event analysis of grid events– Assess the impact of wind generation on system inertial and governor-driven frequency

response– Assess low voltage ride through capability of generation (esp. wind generation)– Detect, monitor and analyze power system oscillations and the interactions of wind generation

(e.g., 1.8 Hz oscillations in west Texas, 5.5 Hz oscillations near wind generators)– Compare monitored dynamic response with model-based predictions of system performance

(model validation) Evaluate PMU data to determine optimal placement and future monitoring needs
