It is a statistical fact that more times than not the “Bad Guy” is seeking a spe- cific type. He, or sometimes she, is looking for that person who screams like the donkey from Shrek...“I AM A VICTIM! PICK ME! PICK ME!” Many feel that the police officer should keep them safe. However, there is a lot of truth in the say- ing, “When seconds count, the cops are only minutes away.” Most of the time the police officers are simply responding to the request for help. It is rare that the officer just happens to be at the right place at the right time. Don’t get me wrong, it does happen, but it’s rare. With all of that being said, let’s talk about the first step in our Personal Safety Strategy. BE AWARE! One of the most important components of your Personal Safety Strategy is AWARENESS. Learn to recognize locations to avoid and people to steer clear of. Think about where you park, the lighting in the area, how populated is it, etc. Listen to the intuition God gave you. You know, that feeling that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up. If there is something that makes you nervous, AVOID IT! It is always best to avoid a situation if you can. Example: Leaving the mall at night is a major concern for many, espe- cially parents who have children working there until closing. When preparing to exit the mall, look around outside before you exit. Identify people who concern you and avoid them. If something feels wrong, have security or law enforcement escort you out. Your environmental or situation- al awareness is seriously impacted by dis- tractors. Texting and talking are two exam- ples of distractors the bad guy is using to victimize others. Remember, the first consideration in your Personal Safety Strategy is Awareness. If you are aware of the potential dangers, you can avoid them! In part two of this series, in the February 2014 issue, we will discuss being prepared. The meeting was held in the Herron Center of theHobe Sound Bible College. To set the mood, all mem-bers present had party hats, and noise makers. Songs withbirthday themes rang out from the CD player as folksentered the room for the meeting and during break time.

The meeting proceeded with 3 prepared speeches andevaluations.

Intermission snacks were brought in by Rich Otten,DTM, who made a delicious chocolate birthday cake andJef Otten, CC, who baked peanut butter cookies. AreaGovernor, Audrey Burzynski, provided birthday party“goodie” bags for everyone.

Following the break, Table Topics was led by Jan Ottenrelating some birthday trivia followed by asking questionsthat evoked birthday memories from fellow membersMarty Post, George Strasdas, Kathleen Gemme, HieuHuynh and Carol Labuhn.

Toastmasters International presented the club with a

Certificate of Achievement to commend Hobe SoundToasters for reaching 5 years as a member of the largerorganization.

In a letter of congratulations accompanying the certifi-cate, George Yen, DTM, International President andDaniel Rex, Chief Executive Officer stated, “You andyour leadership team are the alchemists that transformlives, one at a time. Indeed, Toastmasters’ founder, Dr.Ralph Smedley, wrote on his 80th birthday on February22, 1957, about the magic of a successful club experience:

It leads to the discovery of hidden abilities, bringingthese latent talents into use, and thus enriching theman’s life.

It broadens the man’s conception of how to live withpeople.

It helps in the integration of personality. It brings out for use the leadership traits and abilities

and thus helps to prepare the man to be a leader. The letter goes on to say, “As you and your team per-

form your leadership roles, you will notice the transfor-mation happening within. Beyond the improvementin your communication and leadership skills, youmight notice the gradual transition from a “taker to agiver.” If so, congratulations, you are on your way inyour leadership track, be it in district leadership or inyour profession.”

“Through all of our five years the Hobe Sound Bible

College has been supportive and allows us the use of aclassroom for our regular meetings as well as largerrooms for contests and events. We are so grateful fortheir continuing support” stated Jan Otten, ToastersSecretary. The Bible College will be hosting their annu-al auction fundraiser on November 15th and haveasked Hobe Sound Toasters to contribute items to thatauction.
