This workshop will be based on working from direct observation and photo reference. Attention will be given to painting techniques using a variety of painterly effects and learn- ing different methods in the application of oil and/or pastel medium. Instruction will include discussion on painterly concepts and how these concepts help the artist set up portraits, and how to evaluate the usage of light, struc- ture, space, and context from a painting’s start to completion. Practical problems will be designed to help each student see in ways that develop tangible painting skills. Students will become familiarized with the painting process by in-studio practice. This workshop is open to all levels. Oil/Pastel Portrait Workshop with Joel Spector Joel Spector graduated from Fashion Institute of Technology, attended the Art Students League, and received his MFA at Western Connecticut State University. Joel’s commis- sioned portraits have been included in many prominent collections. He has taught at Fash- ion Institute of Technology, Wooster Commu- nity Center for the Arts, the Art League of Long Island; SCAN and at Western Connecticut State University. Joel’s work has won many prestigious awards, been shown in museums and galleries, and has been featured in numerous magazines.
