First introduced in the UK in 1929, used as a hospital drink to replace lost fluids, called Lucozade Energy.

Early 1980’s…was promoted as "replenishing lost energy”

First one introduced in the U.S.A. was Jolt Cola in 1985 “all the sugar with twice the caffeine”

Pepsi’s Josta in 1996-discontinued in 1999 Austrian entrepreneur, Dietrich Mateschitz,

saw an opportunity and created a drink modeled after a Thai energy drink

Growing population looking for ways to do more without adequate sleep, etc.

Marketing strategy was based on a product to increase energy/alertness; which ensured his product would become a worldwide best seller. With help created Red Bull

Red Bull introduced to U.S. market in 1997 By 2001, the US energy drink market had

grown to nearly 8 million per year in retail sales, with Red Bull leading the way. (65%)

Over the next 10 years, sales grew an average of over 50% per year, becoming the fastest growing beverage market

In 2011, sales topped $9 billion. Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical

Names of these drinks are zingy and sometimes aggressive: Whoop***, Venom, Piranha, Amp, etc.

Cool containers & catchy slogans promise to "give you wings," "make you fire on all cylinders" and "thunder through your workouts" with "radical energy in liquid form.”

Millions in advertising aimed at American youth

Intention is to hook potential customers while they’re young, and keep them for decades.

Position their products as cool; often aligning with high-energy, exciting activities like the

Should be called “stimulant” drinks. Typically contain stimulants, such as caffeine,

ephedra (banned by FDA in 2004), taurine and guarana, with varying amounts of sugars, carbohydrate, protein, amino acids, vitamins, herbs, sodium, and other minerals.

Stimulants are substances that increase the activity of a living organism or one of its parts.

Stimulates the heart, causing an increase in heart rate and a rise in blood pressure

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 6

Instead of replacing electrolytes in the body, they are adding large amounts of sugar, caffeine and other stimulants, which can rev up the body and increase heart rate unnaturally.

Research suggests that about one-third of teens and young adults regularly consume energy drinks (3 per week)

Sometimes referred to as, “Liquid Crack”

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 7

Energy drinks all try to stimulate something in your body that leads to your feeling as though you have more energy.

This is usually a feeling that lasts just a short time.

Actually a person may feel even more fatigued after the initial rush has worn off.

Pretense of being full of energy while the body is actually exhausted.

May have serious risks from long-term use Side effects in children, especially those with

medical conditions may increase the dangers

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 8

Sports drinks are flavored beverages that often contain carbohydrates, minerals, electrolytes, vitamins or other nutrients.

Often suggests optimal athletic performance and replacement of fluid and electrolytes lost in sweat during physical exertion.

Sports drinks usually DO NOT contain caffeine or other stimulants.

Doctors warn that people need to be made aware that these are not sports drinks or just cans of "quick energy"

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 9

Are the ingredients DANGEROUS? If you or I or our children are drinking them… Should we be CONCERNED?

Let’s take a look inside:

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 10

Primary “boost” ingredient Potentially the most dangerous element It works by blocking a brain chemical

(adenosine) involved in sleep. Caffeine is a powerful stimulant, a class of

psychoactive drug that increase activity in the brain.

Other stimulants include: Nicotine, Cocaine, Amphetamines, and Prescription drugs

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 11

Research shows that caffeine may interfere with the absorption of Vitamin D.

Causes the body to lose valuable B vitamins which is the "normal" energy creation in the body.

Can temporarily elevate alertness, mood and awareness, but can also produce mood changes and distorted perceptions.

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 12

Can cause loss of potassium and calcium, which can lead to muscle soreness and delay recovery time after exercise.

Caffeine’s diuretic effect and the potassium and calcium loss it causes make drinks high in caffeine poor choices for hydration or replacement of electrolytes.

Not a sports drink

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 13

LABEL DISGUISES: Most high-energy drinks come in a variety of sizes ranging from 8 to 32 oz—

Yet the ingredients and amounts listed on the label reflect those of an 8-oz single serving size.

You need to double or triple all the amounts FDA currently does not regulate energy drinks

in the United States (any age can buy them) Manufacturers aren’t required to list caffeine

content Consumer is often unaware of the amount of

caffeine they are consumingTami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical

Most have about 80 milligrams of listed caffeine per 8 ounce serving size –cans are usually 16 ounces

2 servings…160 milligrams of caffeine!!

180 mg Caffeine = about 5 (12 oz size) cans of Coca Cola

(34mg per 12 oz can)

Within RDA for healthy adults …a bit high for teens/children…BUT NOT the

whole picture…What about the “Energy Blend” amounts?

Each manufacturer can have a different energy blend

Monster consists of a mixture of ingredients…some are safe on their own and may occur naturally in or with the body, like L-carnitine, an amino acid

Glucose, a simple sugar, these both help the body produce energy

Caffeine and Guarana are stimulants The combination and unnaturally high amounts in “energy blends” can be very

dangerous20

Caffeine = over 70 (12 oz) servings of Cola!

Almost all energy drinks, (except "sugar free“) even those hyped as "light" are high in sugar

Accounts for almost 100% of the carbs The RDA for sugar is approximately 6 – 7

teaspoons of sugar for every 2000 calories consumed… one can of energy drink contains more than enough sugar for an entire day.

Sugar rapidly elevates blood sugar level Gives quick energy of short duration Body quickly releases insulin, rapidly lowering

blood sugar. Blood sugar quickly drops, BUT so does endurance and energy.

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 24

another “boost” needed soon after Sugar leeches vital minerals and vitamins

from the body to help the intestines digest it (sugar is not highly digestible in refined form), which leads to compromised bones, teeth, and health of many of our vital organs, including the liver and pancreas.

Too much sugar can create an acidic environment in our body, throwing the pH balance off

Obesity & Type 2 diabetes has been linked to sugar misuse

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 25

Monster has about 26 grams of sugar per 8 ounce serving size –cans are 16 ounce size 2 servings…52 grams of sugar!!

When the temperature of Aspartame exceeds 86 degrees F, the wood alcohol in ASPARTAME coverts to formaldehyde and then to formic acid, which in turn causes metabolic acidosis. (Formic acid is the poison found in the sting of fire ants).

ASPARTAME changes the brain's chemistry. It is the reason for severe seizures.

Changes the dopamine level in the brain

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 29

Aspartame is 180 times sweeter than sugar; nutritionally, it has the same energy value as sugar.

High-energy drinks containing aspartame produce the same sudden rush of energy.

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 30

Sucralose is 600 times sweeter than sugar and 200 times sweeter than aspartame.

It’s not used by the body for energy production because the body can’t break it down.

Those that contain sucralose produce the energy-rush sensation through a combination of vitamins, nutrients, and herbal supplements.

An amino-acid that regulates the heart beat It's also one the brain's neurotransmitters. Stimulates the nervous system and increases

energy First located in and extracted from the bile of

a red bull It is where the energy drink Red Bull got it’s

name The human body naturally consumes 100

milligrams of taurine through regular nutrition.

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 32

2000 milligrams of taurine in one 16 ounce can of Monster. A recommendation for maximum intake has never been established, but 2000 milligrams seems HIGH…

Concern: Taurine found in energy drinks now is typically a synthetically made substance.

Concern: Some of the side effects of mixing taurine with caffeine may include bizarre behavior, the shakes, anxiety, rage and sensitivity to noise.

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 33

Ephedra also known as ephedrine is a stimulant and a thermogenic (has fat burning qualities)

Banned by FDA in 2004, may still see it as Ma huang, green stems of the plant

Ephedra has been described as a drug that: Increases heart rate and blood pressure

EVEN at LOW doses Can cause severe skin reactions, dizziness,

insomnia, nausea, and diarrhea Strokes, seizures, and taken in high doses

can cause deathTami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical

Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 34

Mixing ephedrine and caffeine can elevate the heart rate, increase hypertention, and damage heart tissue.

Other negative side effects can include muscle damage, nerve damage, and strokes.

Loss in memory Combination of ephedrine and caffeine

dangerous, especially for diabetics

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 35

Pronounced gwa-ra-nah Shrub native to Amazon rain forest. The fruit are small, bright-red, and contains

black seeds

Guarana is one of the richest sources of caffeine, containing up to 3X the amount as in coffee

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 36

Is reputed to be a stimulant and may increase mental alertness, fight fatigue, and increase stamina and physical endurance

Boosts the caffeine level of high-energy drinks dramatically.

One gram of guarana may contain 40 to 80 mg caffeine.

Guarana may be listed as an ingredient in part of the “energy blend.”

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 37

The amount of caffeine DOES NOT have to be listed on drinks containing guarana

It isn't possible for consumers to accurately estimate how much caffeine they are consuming through guarana.

Warning for people with heart conditions, diabetes, high blood pressure, epilepsy, overactive thyroid, anxiety, insomnia, and kidney disease’

The use of guarana may increase the risk of Arrhythmia,(irregular heartbeat), when combined with ephedra, caffeine, or other stimulants.

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 38

Creatine is a chemical that is normally found in the body, mostly in muscles

Used for improving exercise performance and increasing muscle mass in athletes and older adults

If you are not a body builder, you are probably getting enough in the natural foods you eat;

supplementation is not necessary, especially in teens and young adults.

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 39

Some health experts fear that creatine could put a strain on the kidneys

Though not proven, there is also concern that high doses could affect the heart and liver.

Both the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Sports Medicine strongly oppose the use of creatine by anyone younger than 18

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 40

Ingredients must be listed, but NO amount has to be given

Caffeine, Guarana, Taurine, and Ephedra do NOT have to have amounts listed on the label

These ingredients can be listed as “part of the energy blend”

Separately they may be quite safe, but researchers warn, they should NOT be combined

Serving size is typically for 8 ounces…most come in 16 to 32 ounce sizes

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 41

Some energy drinks offer exotic fruits to make you think you are consuming something healthy

Some energy drinks offer a variety of vitamins.

The best way to get your vitamins and minerals is through proper nutrition

AND whole food supplementation when necessary

Caffeine can hinder vitamin absorption

An extract made from the root of the ginseng plant. Panax ginseng is the species most commonly used. The ginseng content in energy drinks typically ranges between 8 mg and 400 mg in 16 ounces…optimal dose of at least 200 mg.Ginseng may work by increasing the uptake of blood glucose by cells in the brain and elsewhere

A recent review in American Family Physician determined that ginseng doesn't enhance physical performance.

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical

The real danger that adults, and especially teens face, is forming a dependence on energy drinks, which is very easy in light of our busy lifestyles…jobs, hectic schedules, school, sports and other activities.

Teens often assume that the caffeine in these drinks will allow them to get by on only six to seven hours of sleep per night, far short of the nine hours they need at this age.

Most believe the drinks will restore normal alertness levels.

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 44

Contain even higher caffeine levels than other energy drinks, plus a mixture of herbs, vitamins, and nutrients that when combined, provide that energy rush.

Shots are sold in volumes ranging from 0.08 to 3 oz per container.

The caffeine in a “shot” may be five times greater than that in a regular 8-oz cola.

“Energy blends” can be even higher

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 45

Caffeine can cause cardiac stimulation and coronary vasodilation. It relaxes smooth muscle and stimulates skeletal muscle.

Caffeine intoxication is a recognized syndrome and is marked by nervousness, anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, gastrointestinal upset, tremors, rapid heartbeats (tachycardia), psychomotor agitation (restlessness and pacing) and in some cases, death.

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 46

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 47

This is a normal heart rate

This is an elevated heart rate on stimulants/caffeine

Tachycardia occurs when your heart rate rises above 100 beats per minute. Sensitivity to caffeine & stimulants varies, so each person can experience a heart rate increase from a smaller amount than someone else...especially children & young adults!

Even 50 mg of caffeine, the amount in 1/2 cup of coffee, CAN increase heart

rate and blood pressure.

48

Normal Heart Rate at Rest: Children (ages 6 -

Elevated Heart Rate from stimulants:

This is about 4.5 beats per second = 270

Statistics from Cleveland & Mayo clinicsEASILY TRIPLES THE

NORMAL HEART RATE

Extended use and abuse of energy drinks can be as dangerous as drug involvement

or long-term use of alcohol or tobacco Combination of several different stimulants

can cause real HARM TO THE BODY and may disrupt normal growth when used regularly by children & young adults

More likely to experience cardiopulmonary complications

Teens are more likely to engage in high-risk activities

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 49

While some young energy-drink users have become physically ill after consuming the products, experts are also worried about the relationship between use of the high-caffeine products and risk-taking.

“It appears the kids who are heavily into drinking energy drinks are more likely to be the ones who are inclined toward taking risks,” said study author Kathleen Miller of the University of Buffalo.

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 50

A March 2008 study in the Journal of American College Health, linked energy-drink use among athletes to a variety of high-risk behaviors. Recent research suggests that teens and young adults who consume energy drinks may be at greater risk of a number of high-risk behaviors, such as unprotected sex, alcohol and other drug problems, and violence, (starting fights & aggressive behavior, like road rage) the New York Times reported in May.

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 51

The top six dangers associated with energy drinks for teens, (and adults) includes:

“caffeine intoxication” increased risk of injury (high risk behavior) increased blood pressure Increased heart rate increased risk of substance abuse, and

dependence. heart failure that can lead to death

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 52

Mixing a depressant (alcohol) with a stimulant (the energy drink) can be very dangerous.

The stimulant effect of so much caffeine can mask the depressant effect of the alcohol. People drinking energy drinks with alcohol may feel very alert and not realize how drunk they are

This can have an effect on your heart and claims have been made that this combination has lead to death.

Some countries in Europe have banned Red Bull and other energy drinks.

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 53

A study by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has shown a tenfold increase in energy drink related hospitalizations between 2005 and 2009.

The report stated that this number climbed to 13, 114 in 2009 -- up from which just 1,128 in 2005 -- according to Reuters. 16,055 visits were reported in 2008 alone, the highest number of energy drink related hospitalizations ever recorded.

Majority hospitalized in relation to energy drinks were adult males between the ages of 18 and 39.

Females were more likely to wind up in the hospital as the result of a combination of energy drinks and pharmaceuticals.

Drink water---sometimes dehydration is sensed by your body as fatigue.

Sip it slowly throughout the day, for optimal hydration

A good rule of thumb to figure out how much water you should be drinking, is take your body weight, say 150 pounds and divide it in half, so 75, and that’s how many ounces you should be drinking per day, 75 ounces…more if you are sweating, if it is hot, you are exercising or stressed, etc.

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 55

These types of food have a negative effect on your blood sugar. Minutes after eating these items, your blood sugar spikes, insulin is released and then your blood sugar crashes…resulting in a groggy, low energy feeling.

Eating the right foods all day will ensure even blood sugar levels and balanced energy throughout the day.

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 56

Moving gets your blood pumping, Your heart rate up in a good way and Gets your adrenaline flowing for natural

energy Gets your lymphatic system moving…works

with the circulatory system to deliver nutrients, oxygen, and hormones from the blood to the cells that make up the tissues of the body

Healthier cells = more energy

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 57

Adults require 8 hours per night Teens require 9 hours of

uninterrupted sleep per night. Skipping sleep and trying to still get everything

done is NOT good for your body. When you feel tired, it is your body telling you to rest.

Adding stimulants to push your body beyond what it should be doing, will result in unbalance in the body’s pH, depletion of the mineral reserves, immune system overload, sickness and will eventually lead to disease.

Tami Cole, C. H. S. & Biblical Health Coach AIMForBalance.com 58
