Stuff We Throw Away
What is TRASH?• Things we don’t want anymore?
• Things that are no longer useful?
Where does the TRASH go?• What is a landfill?
What can we do with things that don’t belong
here?
Page 3
• What does it mean to recycle?– It means you don’t throw certain things away

RECYCLE!!!
Page 4
WHERE DO ALL THE
RECYCLABLES GO??
Page 5
The recyclables are taken to a
Material Recovery
Facility to be sorted.
Page 6
The recyclables are pushed into a pile inside the
building.
Page 7
Recyclables are carried by conveyor.
Page 8
Workers begin to sort the recyclables.
Page 9
More workers sort the recyclables.
Page 10
Some of the items are dropped into large collection areas.
Page 11
Magnets, currents, and rotating “blades” are used to
separate the lighter items from the heavier items.
Page 12
Newspaper falls from the conveyor.
Page 13
Newspaper is carried to the baler.
Page 14
Milk jugs are carried to the baler.

Page 18
The sorted recyclables are sold to manufacturers.
Page 19
Manufacturers make new products
from the recycled bottles, cans and paper.
Page 20
Aluminum cans may be recycled
back into new aluminum cans.
Page 21
Recycled plastic is used to make a lot of new things!
Page 22
Recycled paper is used to
make new paper products.
Page 23
Manufacturers sell the new recycled
products to stores.
Page 24
We buy the new products
at the store.
Page 25
We use the things we buy, and then we...
Recycle again!
Page 26
Why Should We Recycle?
• It’s easy!• It’s good for
the planet!• It saves
landfill space
Page 27
Recycling helps conserve natural resources
• Natural resources are…– Water– Land– Forests– Minerals– Fossil fuels
Page 28
If we don’t recycle aluminum cans,
we must dig minerals from the earth
to make new aluminum cans.
Page 29
If we don’t recycle paper, more trees must be cut down
to make new paper.
