Introduction:

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948) was one of the few men in

history to fight simultaneously on moral, religious, political, social, economic,

and cultural fronts. During his time as a lawyer in South Africa he developed

his strategy of non-violence: the idea of opposing unjust laws by non-violent

protest.

When Ghandi was 18 years old, he came to London to

train as a barrister (lawyer).

He tried behaving like an Englishman and took up

ballroom dancing.

In these days he got stage fright while speaking in

court.

3. Ghandi had his first taste of racial discrimination shortly after his arrival in South Africa, when he was

thrown off a train at Pietermaritzburg station after he refused to move to a third-class carriage. The city of

Pietermaritzburg, about 100km from Durban erected a statue of Gandhi on the site where he was arrested .
