LIZ JACKSON HEROTOHERO.US
Liz Jackson, of Lakewood, WA never gives any more for a bio than
this ...
Borne of the uniform, Wore the uniform,
Wed the uniform, and Bore the uniform.
But a few other things have filled in the gaps. She is the National
Director and Founder of the Hero To Hero Troop Morale Campaign,
a
non-political troop support program that went from a small local
effort for first responders to be able to show their support for
our troops by giving the very shirts off their backs to hometown
troops deployed
to war zones around the globe.
After the death of a young cousin, Sgt Jacob Herring, in Talafar,
Iraq, 2004, the program went national, and ultimately
international. As of this writing, over 40,000 first responders
have stepped up for our troops, and the
program tour has happened 4 times, covering the distance of twice
around the equator.
After 7 years, Liz has fulfilled the promise made when their cousin
was killed, and the stateside program has stood down. She remains
involved with the Canadian part of the campaign and plans to always
be a part of honoring our Fallen & Wounded.

Music is provided today by the Brass Quintet of the 56th Army Band,
I Corps, JBLM. The 56th Army Band is comprised of 40
musician-soldiers. Soldiers demonstrate the highest professional
performance and appearance standards to best represent the Army and
to serve the nation.
The 56th Army Band was constituted on 12 October 1943 and activated
in Sicily on 29 October 1943 as the Band, 9th Infantry Division.
The Band was activated as the I Corps band on 8 July 1991. The
Band’s distinguished history includes 13 campaign participation
credits for World War II and Vietnam. The Band received many
decorations; most notable is the Meritorious Unit Commendation
awarded by Presidential Order in 1968.
Excerpt from the Akron Beacon Journal on May 30, 2005 President
Harry S. Truman couldn’t believe his eyes. He scanned the war
hero’s record and spoke with glowing admiration. President Truman
remarked, “This is the most remarkable list of citations I have
ever seen.” Never before in American history had one soldier
collected so many medals in one day. Llewellyn Chilson, “the
fightingest man” in the 45th Infantry Division, was the second most
decorated soldier of World War II. He earned 29 medals, including
three Distinguished Service Crosses, two Purple Hearts, two Silver
Stars, a Legion of
Merit, two Bronze Stars, a Combat Infantryman’s Badge and two
French Croix de Guerre.
Born in 1920, Chilson was a scrappy kid on the mean streets of
Akron, OH. On March 28, 1942 - just days shy of his 22nd birthday -
he was drafted into the U.S. Army for WWII. He trained for a year
before joining the 179th Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, which
shipped out of Camp Patrick Henry, VA, in June 1943.
The Axis powers would soon know his fury as a warrior. He battled
his way across North Africa, Sicily, Salerno, Anzio, France and
Germany. The war ended for him two weeks before Germany’s official
surrender May 8, 1945. The wounded soldier was transported to the
34th General Hospital in Stockbridge, England.
While he was in the hospital he noticed a pretty nurse named Mary.
She was from Santa Barbara, CA. They were married later that year.
Llewellyn and Mary had two daughters, Roberta and Marilyn.
He was discharged from the service in 1945 but re-enlisted in 1947
and rose to the rank of Master Sergeant. He was stationed at Ft.
Hood, TX and later at Ft. Sill, OK. In 1963 he retired from the
Army at the age of 44.
Llewellyn M. Chilson died in October 1981 during a vacation to
Tampa, FL. He was 61 years old. “The fightingest man” of the 45th
Infantry Division was buried with full military honors here at
Mountain View Memorial Park.

UNIVERSITY PLACE VETERANS MEMORIAL
This Veterans Memorial is being created by the citizens of
University Place to honor the men and women of University Place who
have so valiantly served their country in times of peace and
war.
Lest we forget, for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, freedom
is not free.
The University Place Veterans Memorial is located just south of the
intersection of Cirque Drive and Bridgeport Way West, in the pocket
park located on the west side of Bridgeport Way commonly known as
the Drum Road Greenway Park.
The committee was formed in October of 2009 by the late City of
University Place Councilwoman Jean Brooks and her husband Harvey
Brooks. It was Jean’s dream to create this lasting memorial in
honor of all military veterans from University Place. The committee
is currently made up of a diverse group of community leaders, civic
leaders, veteran organization members, and community volunteers
with the committed goals to:
• Create a permanent place within University Place to honor the
service and sacrifice of all veterans from University Place
• Provide a prominent location within University Place to hold
veteran related events and memorials such as on Memorial Day, Flag
Day, and Veteran’s Day
• Create an opportunity of the residents of University Place to
participate in the development of a memorial in honor of its
military veterans
All cash donations will go towards the purchase of labor and
material for the construction of the memorial facility. Where noted
on the website www.upveteransmemorial.org, cash may be donated for
the purchase of commemorative paver tile or larger items. Cash
donations may be made by personal check, charge card, or paying
through PayPal. Checks should be made out to UP Veterans Memorial
and sent to University Place Veterans Memorial, 3800 A Bridgeport
Way W #405, University Place, WA 98466. Please note on the check
memo line if a general cash donation, or if the donation is to be
for a specific memorial item. You may also visit the website and
click on “Donate Here” to make an online donation.
The University Place Veterans Memorial is a 501©3 non-profit
corporation (registration pending, EIN #08-0540857) in the State of
Washington.
