How to Deliver Culturally Competent Care
Presented by Connie Wilson
• The Hispanic population is increasing
•Our goal is improved education pre/post procedure
Barriers
•Our first barrier is language•Translation via person or technology•Do not allow family or friends to translate unless an approved translator is present
• Time – this culture is much more relaxed about time and keeping appointments (D’Amico & Barbarito, n.d.)
•Health Beliefs •Fatalism•Hot and Cold Theory (D’Amico & Barbarito, n.d.)
•OTC Medications – these medications are used freely and education about the potential GI side effects needs to be emphasized (D’Amico & Barbarito, n.d.)
• Trust – staff is often seen as outsiders (D’Amico & Barbarito, n.d.)
•Resources – do these patients have the resources to follow through with the instructions given to them post procedure.
• Family dynamics• Patriarchal (D’Amico & Barbarito, n.d.)
