The 2nd Annual All-KUCDD Meeting was held in Lawrence on Friday, September 21, 2018 with over 50 attendees from all three sites: Lawrence, KUMC, and Parsons.

Karrie Shogren, Director of the Kansas University Center on Developmental Disabilities,welcomed the group and set the stage for the day with highlights of the long historical background of KUCDD and a brief overview of the current work in progress.

Josh Allison-Burbank presented his thoughts on diversity in service, research, practice, and mentoring emphasizing the development of good working relationships among individuals from diverse backgrounds. Small group activities around the KUCDD core functions created a lively conversation and an opportunity for collaboration, expertly led by Leni Swails and Lisa Hildebrandt.

The always appreciated noon meal gave attendees the opportunity to meet and greet, collaborate, converse, and share ideas and ah-ha moments with colleagues. If the sound level in the hall was an indication of interest, it was a successful networking opportunity. The afternoon was facilitated by Misty Goosen and

Jessica Schuttler and brought the groups back together challenging them with identification of the benefits stakeholders can achieve by engaging with KUCDD. Sticky notes were distributed, ideas applied, and discussion followed. The group said their good byes amid the promise of “this time, next year”.

PROJECT NEWSATK Southeast AT Access Site Recognized by Friends of Man

Assistive Technology for Kansans (ATK) is pleased to note that the work of AT Specialists at the Southeast AT Access Site, Parsons, KS was recently recognized by Friends of Man, a private non-profit foundation. ATK customer Nancy V. received AT services to help her decide what assistive technology would work best for her. Staff provided device demonstrations, she was able to try out devices, and a short-term loan of equipment was available. The ATK philosophy “Try before you buy” helped her make the right decision. ATK staff worked with Nancy to review public and private funding resources, identified the ones most likely to fit her situation and assisted her in completing the application and submitting required funding documentation. For more than 36 years, Friends of Man has helped people with critical needs return to or more towards a more independent life. Thanks to Friends of Man! ATK Assistive Technology for Kansans (ATK) staff quarterly meeting

Assistive Technology for Kansans (ATK) staff from across the state met in Topeka on September 26, 2018 and tackled a full agenda of training and collaboration.

Highlights from the meeting include Stuart Jones’ demonstration and explanation of a variety of Standers and in particular the Rifton TRAM. Nancy Bolden and Cassie Ramon

offered their expertise. ATK staff were reminded that some equipment that is available through the KEE Reuse program requires a completed Professional Recommendation Form before certain devices are delivered. In the picture, Nancy Bolden (left) and Stuart Jones demonstrate the Rifton TRAM.

Mary Ellen Wright, KanCare, Working Healthy/Work, outlined the program’s highlights which include earning more income without loss of medical coverage, the ability to accumulate assets, and

elimination of spend down. Qualified individuals can benefit from this program and Ms. Wright answered questions from the group.

The meeting closed with a discussion about the ATK-KEE equipment donation drives that are either just completed or in process and the results are outstanding! Full reports on these activities are promised for the December meeting in Salina.
