What are your ideas about networking?
First Things First
• You can get ahead in life without it; • You don’t have time to do it; • Networking is only for outgoing extroverts; • Networking is only for those job-seekers who know a lot of people and are well-connected;
• Networking is about using people; and
• When your work speaks for itself, connections are not important.
Myths about networking
Networking is building rela6onships before you need them, so that when you need them, you know whom to call and he or she will want to help you.

• Create a 30 second commercial and a 10 second introducAon;
• Dress to make an Impression;
• Prep your face; and
• Develop small talk for conversaAon.

Defining what you want is the critical first step in almost any situation

• Determine how networking will assist you with filling these goals;
• Assess your current network of acquaintants and their aKributes;
• Constantly and consistently search for ways to meet others needs by connecAng them with your network.

• Interest/experiences

• Demeanor; • Mannerisms; • Body Language; and • Grooming and Accessories
Dress to make an Impression Good, Bad or Indifferent
Smiling gives the Impression that you’re:
• Approachable;
• Enthusiastic;
• Friendly; and
• Will also make you feel better!!!
Prep Your Face
• Make Eye Contact – AKempt to idenAfy the eye color; • Firm Handshake – No limp wrist, bone crushers, church lady, or “I’m in charge” shakes; and • Speak Clearly – No do-‐over
Develop Small Talk for Conversation
Instant rapport is the key that unlocks the door

• Limit ConversaAons to 3-‐5 minutes; • Listen more than you talk; • Seek to give first; • Be specific about your needs;
• Don’t ask for anything but advice; and • Follow up selecAvely.
