    Short Message Service (SMS) is acommunication servicecomponentofthe GSM mobilecommunication system,using standardized communications

    protocols thatallowtheexchangeofshorttextmessages between mobilephone devices.

    SMS appeared on thewireless scene in 1991in Europe. The European standard for digitalwireless, nowknown as the Global Systemfor Mobile Communications (GSM),included shortmessaging services fromtheoutset. In North America, SMSwas madeavailableinitiallyon digitalwireless networks. Thesedigitalwireless networks arebased on GSM,codedivision multipleaccess (CDMA),andtimedivision multipleaccess (TDMA)standards.

    The SMS sentbyamobile device is received bya SMSC (ShortMessage Service Center). The SMSC( Short Message ServiceCenter) contacts the HLR (Home Location Register) tolocatethe

    recipientcustomer. Iftherecipient is unavailable,themessage isstored in SMSC and deliveryattempted laterwhen the device isactive.

    SMSC is acombination ofhardwareandsoftwareresponsible fortherelaying and

    storing and forwarding ofa shortmessagebetween an SME and mobile device.

    The SMSC musthavehighreliability,

    subscribercapacity,and messagethroughput. In addition,the system shouldbeeasilyscalabletoaccommodate growingdemand for SMS in the network.

    An SMS message is stored temporarilyin theSMSC iftherecipientmobilephone is offline. It ispossibleto specifyatimeorcutoffperiod afterwhichthe SMS messagewillbe deleted fromtheSMS center. Oncedeleted,the SMS messagewill

    nolongerbeavailable for dispatchtotherecipientmobilephone (even if itbecomes online).

    SMS deliverycan be divided into 2 parts,theyareMobile Originated (MO) andMobileTerminated (MT).

    MO is theprocess of sending SMS fromanumberuntil itreaches theSMSC.

    MT is process ofmessage deliverywhichalreadyreached SMSC to destination number . It is thewayhowSMS Center send messagetodestination number.

    SMS textmessage is sentbySMSC ( SMS Center ) handsetusing SS7 protocol. Ifyou seemore in SS7,we needapplication layercalled Mobile Application Part ( MAP )which send SMS textmessageusing application moduleMessage Originating ( MO ) and Message Terminating (MT ).

    In this protocolwecan answerthatlimitation is in SMSdevelopment.When itwas built, SMS justhaveDigitalCoding Scheme ( DCS ) signaling protocollimited 140octets,whichmeans 140 * 8 bits = 1120 bits.

    weuse 7 bit / characters,and foranotherpurposelikesmart messaging like images and ringing tonesweuse 8 bit.Forotherpurposes 16 bitcharacters encodingwillbeused

    like for FlashSMSwhich showblinking oralerting SMS.

    For defaultalphabetwehave 1120 bits / 7 bits = 160characters. In sameweway,wehave 140 characters in 8 bit,and 70 characters in 16 bit.

    Sowecan see nowthat forone SMS textmessageswehavelimited 160 characters for 7 bitalphabet, 140 characters for 8bitalphabetand 70 characters for 16 bitcharacters.
