Watershed Development in HamirpurDistrict:

Watershed development has been adopted as an approach to conserve and develop the natural resources. Peoples participation as the main strategy for its planning and implementation is the most important element in this approach. A watershed has been defined as geographical unit that drains at a common point.

Watershed Management:It is a process to achieve sustainable development of

natural resources like soil, water and vegetation. It helps in understanding the relationship among soil, water and plants and linkages between uplands and downstream.

A watershed has been planned keeping in view the three physical sectors:

i.) Non-arable land, which includes forestland, grazing land and barren land.

ii.) Arable or cultivated land.iii.) Drainage area comprising networks of natural drainage lines and

waters bodies.

Approach:A watershed project has been delineated into various micro-watersheds of about 500 hact. each of treatable land for various soil conservation measures, promoting sustainable production systems for arable and nonarable land and also to improve the socio-economic status of the watershed community.

Organization support:

envisages:

i.) People’s participation in the form of association and its functional groups namely WA(Watershed Association), WDC(Watershed Development Committee) and VDC(Village Development Committees). These has been formed in each Micro Watershed.

ii.) A Watershed area consisting of 12-13 Micro-Watershed has been allotted in the district with the one PIA (Project Implementing Agency). Block Development Officer of the project area has been designated as PIA and have been provided one multidisciplinary team of 3-4 persons.

iii.) in each Micro Watershed there is a chairman and one Secretary for convening watershed meeting and maintaining the record and accounts of Watershed.iv.) SHGs/UGs has also been formed in the Watershed area.

Structure and implementation of watershed projects in Hamirpur District :

There are three main components of watershed development.A.) Training: it includes training of all persons involved in implementation of watershed programme including the villagers.B.) Community Organization: activities are being performed like conducting of Participatory Rural Appraisal Exercises, awareness camps, exposure visits and formation of SHGs and UGs.C.) Watershed Treatment/Development Works: Under this component the following activities are being taken up:

i.) Land development including in situ measures and soil conservation.ii.) Drainage line treatment by vegetative and engineering structures.iii.) Development of small Water Harvesting Structure such as check dams,

water percolation tanks ponds etc.iv.) Nursery raising for fodder, timber, fuel wood and fruit plant species.v.) Different type of afforestation work.vi.) Agro forestry and Horticulture Development.

vii.) Pasture development.
