` Stress analysis is an engineering studythat

    determinesthe stressin materials andstructures

    subjectedtostaticordynamic forcesor loads

` A stress analysisis required forthe study anddesign ofstructures, e.g.,tunnels,dams,mechanical parts, andstructural

    frames among others,underprescribedor expected loads.

` Stress analysis maybe appliedas a design step tostructures

    thatdo notyet exist.

    ` The aim ofthe analysisisusuallytodetermine

    whetherthe elementorcollection of elements,usually

referredto as a structure, can safely withstandthe

    specified forces.

` Thisis achieved when the determinedstress from the

applied force(s)is lessthan the ultimate tensile

    strength,ultimate compressive strengthor fatigue

strengththe material is known tobe able to withstand,

    thoughordinarily a factorofsafetyis appliedin design.

` All real objectsoccupya three-dimensionalspace. The stressanalysiscan besimplifiedin caseswhere the physicaldimensions andtheloading conditionsallowsthe structure tobe assumed asone

    dimensional ortwo-dimensional andthisprocessiscalledmodelling.

` Appro imate solutio s for bou dary- alue

problems can be obtained t rou h the use of

numerical methods such as the finiteelementmethod, finite differencemethod and boundery

    elementmethod.

` A stress analysiscan be madeexperimentallyby applyingforcesto a test elementorstructure andthen determiningthe resulting stressusingsensors. In thiscase the processwould more properlybe known

astesting (destructive or non-destructive). Special equipment, such as a windtunnel, hydraulicmechanisms,or weights areusedto applythe staticordynamic loading.

` Experimental determination ofstressescan be carriedoutusing, for example, the photoelastic methodordynamicmechanical analysis.

` Photo elastic method is anexperimental methodtodetermine stressdistributionin a material.

` The methodis mostlyusedin cases where mathematicalmethodsbecome quitecumbersome.

` The methodserves as animportanttool fordetermining the critical stresspointsin a material andisoften used fordeterminingstressconcentration factorsin irregular geometries.

` Dynamic Mechanical Analysis is atechnique usedtostudy andcharacterize materials.

` A sinusodial stressis applied andthe strain in the material is

    measured, allowing one todetermine the complex modulus.The temperature ofthe sample orthe frequencyofthe stress are oftenvaried, leading to variationsin thecomplex modulus;

` this approachcan be usedto locate

the glasstransition temperature ofthe material, as well astoidentifytransitionscorresponding toothermolecular motions.
