Presentation of President’s Quilt/ Meet the Board

After many hours on a quilting frame, the President’s quilt for Vickie Janis has been completed. The bees offered time for visiting and getting to know other guild members as well as getting the hand quilting done. Quilt bee hostesses were Maggie Bell, Phyllis Parente, Nancy Bloyer, Sheri Hill, Joan Orris, and Margaret Arnold. The quilt will be presented to Vickie at our May meeting, so come and see the results of the efforts that went into making it. Thanks to all the members who made a block and participated in the bees, Vickie has a real treasure to remem-ber her time as President of Surfside Quilters Guild. The President’s quilt is a wonderful way to honor her for all her time spent giving us a wonderful year of guild activities.

A special thanks goes to Nancy Ota and Mary Freedman who hand appliqued the lettering on the quilt. Mary also provided her sewing room for the assembling of the quilt blocks which was done by Barbara McFarland, Odette Osantowski, Jan Bogikes, Mary Freedman, Sue Richardson, Jan Kemp, Sheryl Smith-Bailey, and Jan Hirth. Sheryl Smith-Bailey hand dyed the back of the quilt and made the wonderful “blow” fish and bubbles for the signatures of those who worked on the quilt. The binding and sleeve were done by Jan Kemp.

It was great fun making this quilt for Vickie especially because of all the help I had doing it. Jan Hirth, Past President

We are starting out on Surfside’s sixth year, and I am thank-­ful for all the wonderful women who make up this guild. Vickie Janis provided us with a fabulous fifth year of quilting and fellowship and, for me personally, encouragement and support. I have always been in awe of the women who have led the guild and feel honored by all of you for entrusting me with this responsibility. But truly, the guild is a sum of its members. The entire Board supplies us with organization and leadership and I wish to thank each one of them in ad-vance for their dedication in the upcoming year. Each speaker that I have worked with this year has commented on what a “classy and friendly” group we are. I am glad to be able to share the upcoming year with you as we enjoy FUN, FRIENDSHIP and …..FABRIC!

Thank you to all the gals who were our holders and folders this past year. Margaret Arnold, Betty Collins, Nancy Gasparotti, Vivien Hawker, Odette Osantowski, Susie Russell, Janet Shannon, Sheryl Smith-Bailey. Join the UFO GROUP in 2014! Please join us at our next meeting: Our May Project is #9 Date: Friday, May 24 (every 4th Friday) Time: 10:00 - 11:30 a.m. Place: Dana Point Library on Niguel Road (1 block East of PCH) April’s meeting brought 23 of us together for a happy morning. AND we were thrilled to see 23 previously unfin-­ished projects! Our group continues to motivate each other, and we’re having a lot of fun. If you don’t think you can ever get back to those UFO’s, you’re wrong. Bette Bradley (who will proudly tell you that she is 90 years old!) showed a huge hand quilted quilt that Nancy Burch completed by adding her spectacular designs in quilting. Bette also told us that she has lots of UFO’s left, and she hopes she never runs out of them - she says they’re something to look forward to.

At our May meeting we are planning something new. We will bring our truly abandoned UFO’s (those we know we’ll never finish because we’re no longer interested, for whatever reason). Members can claim someone else’s UFO for their own. I plan to bring a started - but not finished - BOM from A Time To Sew. I’ve done some of it, but I know I will never finish it. Sherry Hill will take whatever is not “claimed” and use it for Philanthropy!

May typically isn’t a workshop month, since we present the Presi-­dent’s quilt instead of having a speaker;; however, this May, Jan Hirth will teach her Surfside Logo quilt. The workshop fee is $10, which includes the starter kit of fabrics for the logo letters. Jan will be sell-ing kits that include all the fabrics to complete the quilt, along with the fusibles, backing and binding, for $20 to be paid at the workshop. Of course, students can bring their own fabric if they wish. Although this workshop is full we have a waiting list for anyone interested. Spaces frequently open up. Maggie Bell made May's monthly mini! Here are her words about it. “Who wouldn't want a Jan Hirth creation? Who wouldn't want this lovely Surfside Quilters Guild Logo wall hanging? I was lucky enough to win Jan's original Monthly Mini, but signed up to take her workshop & make my own anyway. It was a lot of fun to make & I had plans for what I was going to do with it, but in the end, decided to share it with the membership by donating it to Monthly Mini raf-fle. If you don't have room on a wall somewhere, it can always be attached to a tote bag.”

Those of you who want to form a friendship group, it is never too late! Next year’s friendship committee will be chaired by Monica Shafer and Maggie Bell. Be sure to visit with them in May (or any month) if you are interested in being in a Friendship Group. Just a reminder to fairly new members to have your photo taken in the Fireside Room with Del Thomas at the guild meeting if you have not had it taken yet. This is for the Directory which will come out in July. The deadline for having photos taken for the 2014-15 Directory is the June meeting.

Well the year of BOM “Love of Triangles” is coming to a close. I hope you all became proficient in trian-­gles---we had enough of them. I finished my Wounded Warrior quilt but I’m still working on my “Love of Triangles” Christmas quilt. I hope all of you are working on yours. I want to thank Judy Lawry and Sherry Muetzel for being co-chairs. They were so helpful in reviewing my patterns, providing suggestions, and of course making blocks along the way. I showed Sherry’s mini quilt in the newsletter last month and it was displayed at the guild meeting. Judy is working on finishing her civil war colored quilt. Yeah, we are at the finish line! If your quilt is assembled, quilted, bound, and labeled for our June BOM show, your name will be entered into a drawing for $100 donated by the Thomas Contemporary Quilt Collection. (tops will be accepted for display). Then if you donate your quilt to “Wounded Warriors” or Philanthropy (if your quilt is not patriotic colors), there will be another drawing for $100 donated by Mary Freedman.

This quilt went to Saddleback Mothers of Multiples to be used as an auction item.

“Grandma’s Kitchen” Becky McDaniel on the left and Kimber O’Shea on right. Their friendship group wanted to make a quilt together and liked the vintage look and appliqué of this Lori Holt pattern. These two quilts are complete;; Becky’s is hand appliquéd and quilted, and two other members are working on theirs. They will all be shown at the BCQG quilt show in June.

We are sad to learn of the death on April 22nd of Joyce Conyers, a charter member of our Guild. She will be missed. Congratulations and best wishes to Mary and David Freedman on their 50th wedding anniversary last June. Recently, they shared wonderful memories of the celebration with their daughters and grandchildren with Dan and me. A Disney cruise! How fun! A thinking-of-you card was sent to Cecile Rogers who underwent hip replacement surgery in early March. She is recovering at home where she has a visiting physical therapist and hopes to return to guild in May to see the unveiling of the Vickie Janis' President's quilt.

Get well cards were sent to Sharon Dowlan and Janet Shannon. Do you know a member that needs a little sunshine? Who is celebrating a major birthday or anniversary? Or a new addi-tion to their family? Using your preferred method for making half-square triangles, make the following for each block:

8---Blue/Gold 3 ½” half-square triangles. 4---Red/Gold 3 ½” half-square triangles. 4---Gold 3 ½” squares.

Each strip set will make 3- 12 ½” blocks.

3---Gold strips 2 ½” x 40” 2---Red strips 2 ½” x 40” 1---Blue strips 2 ½” x 40”

Join 3 Gold's, 2 Reds, and 1 Blue strips as shown in diagram. From this strip set, cut 3--- 12 1/2” - wide segments.

“Watermelon Time”, a table runner made by Susan Adams. She was inspired by the UFO group’s January program to use up and clear out. And by the fact she was Fung Shuing her house. The center quilted fabric was two placemats from about 20 years ago. She added the pieced Water-melons on either end and quilted it.

The April Show and Tell featured 13 quilts and 13 presenters with a great variety - in size, color, pattern, etc. We wish to thank all of you who have shared your creations over the past year. We have had a

wonderful time seeing them all up close and personal and feel especially blessed to have made so many new friends in the

process. We are hoping to see many quilts in May ..... even after the first half of the meeting will be spent "oohing and aahing" over the

President's Quilt. You are all such an inspiration.

Jan Kerr shows a memory quilt made for a 50th birth-day, but 17 years after Patti’s 50th Jan told her that she would finish it. In addition to the quilt, there are two pillow shams of other parts of Patti’s life. Jan’s husband long-armed using the wandering hearts pattern.

Lorraine Potter shared her “Game Quilt”. She found this quilt kit at Road to California. It will be a great Christmas gift for Lorraine’s two granddaughters.

“Rupert the Radical Rooster” was shown by Mary Jayne Bellamy who made it from scraps and is framed as it will go in the kitchen. The pattern was purchased in Desert Hot Springs while on a friendship group holiday. #4 UFO for 2014.

“If Only I Were 8 Again” is the name of this quilt by Nancy Bloyer. Made for her 8-year old grandgirl, Jordyn. The fabric is some from stash and some on-line and the pattern is from the book “Sunday Morn-­ing”. Nancy Burch did the beautiful parallel wavy line quilting which softens the vertical scrappy look of the piecework. The quilt has been in the works for a while. Now to see if she has the courage to put it in the mail or to wait until August when she plans a trip to Seattle and she can deliver it in person.

“Daisy” by Kimber O’Shea Kimber is a new member of SQG and says she is Sandy Klop’s #1 fan. She brought this quilt made with Sandy’s fabric line. She says she has so many, but only brought one because she didn’t want us to think that she is a “show-off”. [ Editor’s note: You can show off anytime at this guild, Kimber. We love seeing what our members are making.]

Katy Lillie showed “Katy’s China”. The fabric line is “Mama Said Sew” and the pattern used is “Mama’s China” by Sweetwater. Made in a Cut-Loose Club at Sewing Party. This is Katy’s third UFO this year out of three.

Linda Walters made “Cappuccino” while renewing a friendship at their own “quilt camp” at the friend’s house on Oahu. They finished six quilts in three weeks and had many fun trips to is-land shops. Some of the quilts were quilted here by Peach Pie.

Barbara Seidel showed “Will Work for Chocolate”, a quilt she made for her husband, Jay. She was inspired by one of Jay’s favorite T-shirts with this comment printed on it. She had many other inspirations including Jean Impey’s “Secret Garden” pat-­tern. Quilted by Martha Hurlburt.

Vickie Janis showed “Aunt Donna is 90”. She bought a BOM kit from Mat’l Possessions when they closed. Aunt Donna was the oldest of three children; Baba came from Serbia, Grandpa Janis from Croatia. Donna grew up dancing and opened her own studio in Ohio. She turns 90 on May 2 and the family is flying there to cele-brate her big day. She still line dances and teaches chair aerobics. Vickie had fun quilting, practicing modern feathers on the borders.
