The overall objective is to improve the environmental sustainability of

tourist coastal areas in the Countries of the Mediterranean Sea Basin

through the promotion of the long term cooperation between

institutional authorities and the scientific Community.

Specifically it aims at the optimization, validation and transfer of tools

for the sustainable management of tourist ports/harbours with regard

to monitoring and reduction of marine pollution.

Duration: 50 months (1st September 2011 – 31st October 2015)

Definition of a knowledge framework of selected tourist port areas in

terms of chemico-physical, ecological, socio-economic conditions

and legal aspects as a model for the whole Mediterranean Basin.

Identification of bioindicators for the assessment and monitoring of

the environmental quality of port areas.

Identification of the most appropriate integrated methodologies for

the bioremediation of contaminated water and sediments and

management of treated sediments.

Target groups supported towards sustainable management of tourist

port areas (Training of operators from MPCs. Elaboration of Action

Plans and General Guidelines. Transfer of tools).

MAJOR RESULTS

Initial ENPI Programme rules, e.g. the rule of origin;

Pioneering new administrative rules;

Political situation in the partner countries;

Difficulties in obtaining authorizations;

Long purchasing procedures in partner countries and custom rules.
