Section 3 - Hazards Identification
EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Causes severe burns.
Potential Health Effects
Eye: Liquid splashes may produce severe burns to skin and may cause
damage to eyes
Skin: Liquid splashes may produce severe burns to skin. Nitric Acid
highly corrosive to all parts of bodies.

Ingestion: Will immediately cause corrosion of and damage to the gastro-
intestinal track.
Inhalation: Fumes are corrosive to respiratory track and will cause
coughing, sore throat and laboured breathing. Fluid build up on
lung (Pulmonary Edema) may occur up to 48 hrs after exposure
and could prove fatal.
Long Term
Effects:
Acute effects predominate and their severity is such that
significant repeated or prolonged exposure is unlikely.
Repeated exposure to high level produces adverse effects on
lung and teeth.
Environment: Nitric acid is harmful to aquatic life.

Section 3 - Hazards Identification
Other: Not classes as oxidizing agent. Can display oxidizing propertiesand react with combustible materials. May react violently withreducing agents, metals and a number of other substances.Decomposition product includes nitrogen oxides and hydrogen.
Section 4 - First Aid Measures
Product: Speed is essential. Immediately remove contaminated clothing.Obtain medical attention immediately.
Eyes: Immediately irrigate the eyes with eyewash solution or cleanwater for at least 10 minutes. Continue irrigation until medicalattention can be obtained. Hold eyelids open during flushing.

shower the affected skin with plenty of water. Obtain
immediate medical attention.
Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting. If the person is conscious, wash out
mouth with water and give 2 or 3 glasses of water or milk to
drink. Obtain immediate medical attention and transport the
patient to hospital.
Inhalation: Move the injured person to fresh air at one. Keep the patient
warm and at rest. Administer oxygen if competent person isavailable. Perform artificial respiration, if breathing has
stopped or shows sign of failing. Obtain immediate medical
attention.
Further
medicaladvice:
Following exposure the patient should be kept under medical
review for at least 48 hours as delayed pulmonary edema maydevelo .

Section 5 - Fire Fighting Measures
Extinguishing
Media:
Foam, water and dry power. Use a water spray to cool Fire-
exposed containers and structures.
Specific
hazards if the
product is
involved in aFire:
Not combustible, but having oxidizing properties it may react
with many combustible materials causing Fire and releasing
toxic fumes (Nitrogen Oxide).
May explode on contact with a powerful reducing agent.Reacts with most common metals to liberate hydrogen which
can form explosive mixtures with air. Toxic fumes (oxide
nitrogen) may be given off.
Special
protectiveequipment:
Wear Self-contained breathing apparatus and full protective
clothing.

Section 6 - Accidental Release Measures
Personal
precautions
Put on protective equipment before entering danger area.
Ventilate area of spill or leak to disperse vapors.Environmental
Precautions:
Take care to avoid the contamination of water course and
drains. Inform appropriate authority in case of accidental
contamination of watercourses.

Methods for
cleaning:
Swill away small spillage with copious quantities of water.
Waste water must be disposed of correctly. Before
discharging sewage into treatment plants, neutralization is
generally required.Contain large spillage with sand or earth as necessary. Do not
use organic compounds, sawdust etc. neutralize cautiously
with soda ash and /or lime and recover for disposal.
Pump large amount into containers. Containers should
preferably be of: stainless steel or plastic. Do not use carbonsteel, rubberized steel, polypropylene. Seek advice from the
manufacturer if in doubt.

Section 7 - Handling and Storage
Handling: Wear eye and hand protection when handling small
quantities. Provide adequate ventilation in view of insidious
action of the fumes. When diluting, always add acid to water
not water to acid. Wear full protective equipment where there
is a risk of leaks or splashes.
Storage: Store in cool, well ventilated are, away from potential sources
of heat and direct sunlight. Keep away from combustiblematerials, reducing agents, strong bases. Protect containersfrom corrosion and physical damages. Containers shouldpreferably be of stainless steel. Seek advice from themanufacturer if in doubt.

Section 8 - Exposure Controls, Personal Protection
Engineering
Controls:
Local exhaust ventilation. Provide safety showers and eye
washing facility at any location where skin or eye contact can
occur.
Exposure
Limits:
ACGIH recommended valuesTLV/TW: 2 ppm = 5.2 mg/m3TLV-STEL: 4 ppm = 10 mg/m3
Personal
Protection:
Wear breathing apparatus if exposure levels exceed therecommended limits. Wear PVC gloves, rubber boots, PVCsuit. Use chemical safety goggles or full face shield.

Section 10 - Stability and Reactivity
Chemical
Stability:
The product is stable under normal conditions of storage and
handling.
Conditions toAvoid:
High temperatures.
Incompatibilities
with Other
Materials:
Contact with combustible materials, reducing agents,
alkalies, metallic powers, hydrogen sulphide, alcohols,
chlorates and carbides, carbon steel, monel, copper, and
several other metals and alloys.Hazardous
Decomposition
Products:
Contact with combustible material may cause fire. May
assist combustion. May react violently with reducing agents,
strong bases, organic materials, chloride and finally divided
metals. Reaction with most common metals liberates
hydrogen and toxic oxides of nitrogen. Exothermic reactionwith water. Corrosive ases / va ors.

Section 11 - Toxicological Information
General: Nitric acid is highly corrosive to all parts of the body.
Toxicity Data
(Skin Contact):
Pain, severe burns and brownish or yellow stains.
Prolonged and repeated exposures to diluted solution may
cause irritation, redness, drying and cracking of the skin.
Eye Contact: Immediate pain, severe burns, permanent corneal damage
which may result in blindness.
Inhalation: Mists and vapors may cause irritation of nose, throat andrespiratory tract, transient cough and broncho-constriction.
Severe over-exposure may result in lung collapse and
pulmonary edema which can be fatal.
Prolonged or repeated exposure to mists or vapors of nitric
acid may result in impaired lung function and possible
discoloration and erosion of teeth.

Section 12 - Ecological Information
Mobility: Soluble in water. High mobility in soil.
Persistence/Degradability:
There is evidence of slow degradation in soil and water.
Bio-
accumulation:
The product has low potential of bio-accumulation.
Ecotoxicity: Discharge into the environment to be avoided. Nitric acid isharmful to a be avoided. Nitric acid is harmful to aquatic life
even in low concentrations due to its acid nature.
Neutralization in generally required prior to discharge.
Can cause damage to vegetation. Inhibition of degradation
activity in activated sludge is not be anticipated during
correct introduction of low concentrations.
