Using SMS query system for dissemination
of data from the 2009 Kenya Population and Housing Census
Setup of SMS Service
The SMS service was created as an idea to utilize the existing technology in Kenya.
The current population of mobile phone users in Kenya is about 22 million. This represents 50% of the population.
It is now the norm in Kenya to transact over the Phone e.g pay bills, send and receive money, etc.

Development of Database
The database was carefully developed in-house by the ICT team.
Data was extracted and set in an easy to access manner. Various indicators were carefully selected.
This includes: Total population, Education attained, male and Females in Provinces, Counties, Location and Sub-location.

Challenges
Lack of Big enough server- just converted one of our computers to host the system.
Lack of Awareness. The service was not advertised well enough in the country.
Capacity building. Need to hire additional staff to assist in day to day analysis and queries and system improvement.
