> Changing requirements for Bus and Coach Fire Suppression
Presentation at the Fire Safety Event, NEC on 10/04/2018

>Historical Background
•Historically the installation of Bus and Coach Fire Suppression has not been a
widespread mandatory requirement.
•The inclusion of such systems has been at the discretion of individual local
government transport bodies and vehicle operators.
•In 2018 this will change, as required by a countries membership of the UNECE.
•The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) includes 56
countries, including those in Europe, but also countries in North America (Canada
and United States), Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan,
Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan) and Western Asia (Israel).
•The UNECE sets out Norms, Standards and Conventions and included in that
are matters relating to safety of public transport.

> Historical Background
•For this reason, it will become mandatory on certain new classes of Bus / Coach
to install a fire suppression system, complying with the requirements of UNECE
Regulation No. 107, Revision 6, Amendment 5, Annex 13.
•Only M2/M3 Class III vehicles are currently covered by the requirements for Fire
Suppression under Reg.107.06, with the implementation date for new types
being 10 June 2018.
•It is anticipated that mandatory inclusion of fire suppression in other vehicle
classes will follow.

>UNECE Regulation No. 107, Revision 6, Amendment 5, Annex 13
There are 2 possibilities for certification :
UNECE Regulation No. 107, Revision 6, Amendment 5, Annex 13 - Part 2
This includes for vehicle specific fire tests to be done in conjunction with a vehicle
manufacturer. This then leads to a specific vehicle certification but would require
re-testing for other vehicle types.
It is for this reason that the more generic Part 1 route is often taken.
UNECE Regulation No. 107, Revision 6, Amendment 5, Annex 13 – Part 1
•This part of the regulation includes 4 distinct fire extinguishing performance
tests, all related to different fire scenarios.
•The four fire tests have been adopted by UNECE from a Test Method SP4912
developed by SP Research in Sweden.

>Certification – Larger and smaller engine compartment volumes ??
•Certification is based on a datum system capable of extinguishing fires in a
4m³ Test Rig.
•The certification does allow for re-sizing of a system both in terms of the
number of discharge nozzles and the mass of extinguishing agent.
•Engine Volumes in the range 2m³ to 6m³ can be protected.
•This extrapolation is controlled by formulas contained within the relevant
System Manual, approved as part of the certification.

> Direct Systems Jactone Direct PAFSS are efficient
and simple self-activating systems
for small enclosed hazard areas.
Upon flame impingement or heat,
the pressurised detection tube
ruptures with a burst at the hottest
point. The agent is then discharged
through the burst hole directly at
the heart of the fire.
Direct systems are available in low
pressure and high pressure format,
depending on the most appropriate
extinguishant selected.

> Indirect Systems
Jactone Indirect PAFSS are
efficient and simple self-activating
systems for larger enclosed and
even open hazard areas.
Indirect systems are available in
low pressure and high pressure
format, depending on the most
appropriate extinguishant selected.
Upon flame impingement or heat,
the pressurised detection tube will
burst and by depressurisation will
activate the cylinder valve to open.
The agent is then released through
separate pipework and nozzles
which are aiming at the hazard
area.

> System Types
> Indirect Systems Indirect Systems are generally
used for Larger Volumes or Local
Applications (require directional
control of a discharge nozzle)
Solenoid Actuators can be triggered
by more traditional detection
devices in conjunction with suitable
control panels.
Indirect Systems can be triggered
by :
(1) Manual Release Devices
(as shown)
Or
(2) Solenoid Actuators
