Present continuous

The present simple tells what a person does, is or feels.

The present continuous describes what a person is doing.

Ex. Katie studies Chemical engineering at UDEA.She is a engineering student.she is working for the post office.

Present continuous

The present continuous is used for an action that is happening at the time of speaking

She is driving to work (at this moment)

He is washing his hands.

The three of them are bullshitting in class

Sometimes the action is not happening at the time of speaking

I am reading an interesting book at the moment.

We use the present continuous when we talk about things happening in a period around now (today / this week/ this evening, etc.)

Spelling Rules  For many verbs we make the

ING form by simply adding -ING to end of the verb. 

eat - eating speak - speaking 

cook - cooking 

Verbs ending with –e drop the -e and add ING 

(except for verbs ending in –ee or –ie)

hope - hoping ride - riding 

make - making 

 Verbs ending with –ee  just add -ING 

agree - agreeing flee - fleeing see - seeing 

Verbs ending with -ie  change the -ie to -y and add -ING 

die - dying tie - tying lie - lying

Verbs ending with one consonant, a vowel and one consonant

(except for w, x, and y) For one syllable verbs, double

the consonant and add -ING 

jog - jogging sit - sitting 

run - running stop - stopping 

 

For two syllable verbs 

If the 1st syllable is stressed, just add ING

answer - answering offer - offering 

If the 2nd syllable is stressed, double the consonant and add ING

prefer - preferring begin - beginning
