Despite piling up 499 yards of offense and holding the ball for over 42 minutes, Kansas City needed late-game heroics and four TDs from RB Larry Johnson to pull out this thrilling 35-28 win over Seattle.

Chiefs QB Damon Huard – who was a game-time decision to play after suffering a groin injury in practice that week – turned in a career-high 312 passing yards and a 124.1 rating.

Trailing 3-0, Seattle LB Julian Peterson made the first game-changing play of the afternoon, sacking and stripping Huard. The fumble at the Chiefs seven-yard line resulted in a seven-yard TD pass from QB Seneca Wallace to WR D.J. Hackett.

The Chiefs answered right back as Johnson ripped off a 38-yard run, then finished off the drive with a three-yard TD dive for a 10-7 Chiefs lead. Johnson would finish with 155 yards rushing yards on a fran-chise single-game record 39 carries.

Kansas City added another field goal before Wal-lace brought the Seahawks back with a three-yard TD pass to TE Jerramy Stevens to grab a 14-13 lead late in the first half. The Chiefs snuck in another touchdown just before halftime as Huard found WR Eddie Kennison on gains of 19 and 18 yards before he dumped off a short pass to Johnson over the middle for a nine-yard TD pass and a 20-14 halftime cushion.

Kansas City’s defense forced a punt on the open-ing possession of the second half and the offense marched off a lengthy touchdown drive to take the first two-score lead of the afternoon. Johnson and RB Michael Bennett accounted for 63 of the Chiefs 88 yards on the drive that took 6:51 off the clock. Johnson capped the scoring march with a two-yard TD dive, giving Kansas City a 27-14 lead.

The momentum turned back to Seattle when Chiefs P Dustin Colquitt fumbled trying to pass after dropping a field goal snap. Seahawks CB Kelly Hern-don scooped up the bizarre fumble and returned it 61 yards for a TD, making it 27-21 late in the third quarter. After a missed Chiefs field goal, Wallace fired a 49-yard TD to a wide-open WR Darrell Jackson to give the Seahawks a 28-27 lead with 6:30 remaining.

The stage was set for the Chiefs late-game hero-ics as Huard first dropped a 51-yard bomb to WR Eddie Kennison to the Seattle seven-yard line. From there, Johnson found the end zone for the fourth time of the day, this time on a three-yard run. Huard converted the two-point try with a pass to TE Tony Gonzalez giving Kansas City a 35-28 lead with just 2:15 remaining.

The Chiefs defense appeared to have won the game when DE Tamba Hali tipped a Wallace pass into the arms of DE Jared Allen for an interception. How-ever, Allen fumbled the return and inexplicably gave the ball back to Seattle with 1:58 left.

The Seahawks could get no deeper than the Chiefs 41-yard line as LB Derrick Johnson sacked Wallace on third down and Law tackled FB Mack Strong on fourth down to preserve the Chiefs 35-28 win.

GAME NOTES• RB Larry Johnson established Chiefs single-game records for rushing attempts (39) and total attempts from scrimmage (41), breaking the previous record of 38 (38 rushes, 0 receptions) established by RB Chris-tian Okoye at Green Bay (12/10/89). RB Larry Johnson racks up four TDs vs. Seattle.

THE LAST GAMEVikingsVikings 17, 17, ChiefsChiefs 1133

August 21, 2009 • H.H.H. Metrodome • 62,782

The Chiefs made a valiant effort to register their first win of the preseason, but fell just inches short as Kansas City lost a 17-13 decision at the Metrodome. The Chiefs had first-and-goal at the one-yard line with 0:55 remaining, but couldn’t punch the ball into the end zone for a go-ahead score. WR Ashley Lelie was able to secure a fade pass from QB Matt Guiterriez on fourth-and-goal, but he was ruled out of bounds as time expired in a thrilling finish. QB Matt Cassel completed nine of 14 passes for 99 yards with one TD, good for a 108.9 rating. Meanwhile, Kansas City’s defense didn’t permit a first down in the first quarter as the Vikings accumulated just 20 yards of total offense in the first quarter. While it was the acquisition of QB Brett Favre that had the Twin Cities abuzz, QB Tarvaris Jackson heated up the Metrodome, completing 12 of 15 passes for 202 yards and two TDs, a “perfect” 158.3 rating. Kansas City won the opening toss and Cassel scrambled for a first down and then hit TE Jake O’Connell to move the chains again before a fumble by RB Jamaal Charles put the ball in the hands of QB Brett Favre at the Minnesota 44-yard line. S Jarrad Page made a huge stop of RB Adrian Peterson behind the line of scrimmage on fourth-and-one to get the Vikings off the field. On the Chiefs second possession, Kansas City got on the board when rookie K Ryan Succop hit on a 32-yard field goal. After a Vikings punt, an 18-yard burst by RB Larry Johnson moved the Chiefs into Vikings territory once again. A 20-yard connection from Cassel to WR Dwayne Bowe moved the sticks again. A four-yard TD on a quick slant to Bowe gave Kansas City a 10-0 edge, capping an eight-play, 66-yard drive. With a little over 10:00 remaining in the second quarter the Vikings put together their most consistent drive of the evening, a 15-play, 97-yard march. It was capped off with a 13-yard TD pass from Jackson to TE Visanthe Shiancoe. The Chiefs took a 10-7 lead into the locker room at half. QB Brodie Croyle entered the game for Kansas City to begin the third quarter. The Chiefs took a short-lived 13-7 lead with 5:36 left in the third quarter thanks to a 37-yard FG by Succop. However, the Vikings quickly countered with a four-play TD drive that was capped by a 64-yard TD pass from Jackson to WR Darius Reynaud giving Minnesota a 14-13 lead with 4:03 left in the third quarter. After a Kansas City fumble set the Vikings up at the Chiefs 28-yard line, K Taylor Mehlhaff’s 40-yard FG attempt grazed the left upright and was no good. Minnesota expanded its lead to 17-13 on a 29-yard FG by Mehlhaff with 8:37 left in the contest. Gutierrez took over in the fourth quarter. With the ball on the Kansas City 34-yard line with 3:56 left, Gutierrez orchestrated a steady offensive march down the field, completing seven of 11 passes en route to the Vikings one-yard line. On fourth and goal, Gutierrez’s pass was caught by Lelie, but the Chiefs receiver was ruled out of bounds sealing Minnesota’s 17-13 victory.
