ALEWIVE PROJECTAlewives may once again spawn in Washington Pond. Thatʼs the hope of the Lloyd Davis Trust which is forming a study group in Washington to assess the possibilities. The group, named Medomak Brook Alewife Connection (MBAC) will survey conditions along Medomak Brook, the stream that connects Washington Pond with Medomak River and develop a plan for clearing blockages in the waterway. Another focus of MBAC is to increase monitoring for alewife presence along the upper Medomak River and Medomak Brook. Volunteers have observed the brook for two years with no positive alewife sightings. In fact, local residents estimate from 30 to 60 years since there was a “run.” The most recent officially documented incidence of alewives as a resident species is from a state survey from 1947. Periodically, Washington Pond has been stocked by the Maine Department of Marine Resources. With no returning fish, the conclusion is that access is completely blocked. Lloyd Davis Trust hopes to change all that starting with a presentation on June24 in Washington.
The annual journey alewives make from the sea to spawn in fresh water lakes provides important benefits. These sea-run fish of the herring family are themselves food for innumerable other wild species from eagles to turtles. They are a good source of nourishment for other fish species, as well, including lake trout and bass, two important sport fishing species.
Washington Pond is the largest body of fresh water in the Medomak River Watershed and holds more water than all others in the area combined. Medomak Brook is the route sea-run fish would use to swim from Medomak River to Washington Pond. The Lloyd Davis Trust received a grant last year that provides funds to help generate this connection. The study group will explore ways and means to remove natural and man-made barriers to the free flow of this stream to allow fish passage.
Everyone who is interested in taking part in bringing these historic fish back to Washington Pond is invited to attend an informational meeting on Wednesday, June 24, at 5:30 p.m. at the Evening Star Grange Hall on Old Union Road in Washington Village. Claire Enterline, Marine Specialist at Maine Department of Marine Resources, will be on hand to answer questions and talk about alewife biology and their freshwater/marine cycles and the importance of access to spawning areas. We will have light snacks and beverage.
