Dear Parents/Guardians,
Welcome to Kindergarten! My name is Miss. Hegenauer, and I will be your childs Kindergarten
teacher at Dorothea Lange Elementary School. I am looking forward to getting to know you and
your child and I know we will have a fun, educational, and overall fantastic school year. I have
so many great things planned and a lot of ideas to share with your child. I know how much you
care about your childs education, and I will do everything I can to ensure a successful year.
This is my first year teaching in a classroom, and I am excited that your child will be joining me
in my first Kindergarten adventure. I am a graduate of Rider University in Lawrenceville, NJ,
where I earned a degree in Elementary Education and Fine Arts. I am also certified in Early
Childhood Education, Leadership, and Technology. I am fortunate to had various leadership
positions as a member of Rider Universitys Leadership Development Program and Kappa Delta
Pi International Education Honors society, as well aspresident of Rider Universitys Student
Education Association. These organizations influenced my development of my classroom
management and organizational style that will help your child.

All students can learn when they are accepted for whom and where they are in their educational
journey. My greatest teaching philosophy is that you cannot teach children until you build a
relationship, and my goal this year is to provide a safe and comfortable environment for the
children to explore the areas of interest. Effective learning requires collaboration between the
teacher, student, and parent, grounded in mutual respect and trust.
To help your child feel comfortable in the classroom, I would like to invite you to join our class
on Friday, September 14, 2014 forFamilies Around the World.
The children and I will be
completing a lesson on cultural diversity to create a comfortable environment in our classroom.
When students no longer feel discomfort they will be able to express how they feel and trust will
be gained between the students. I encourage your child to bring in an item that will help your
childs classmates learn about your culture. Each family will speak to the class about their
culture to help students understand their traditions. After show and tell, students will create a
drawing of their family and as a class we will place each family on our world map, creating the
Families Around the World.
The curriculum I have prepared for this school year will allow the children to think creatively
and create projects on their chosen interest. Facing the discomfort of thinking creatively is
something several adults face so it is important to equip children with the necessary tools to
navigate our visual culture society. Children will learn these necessary tools through discovery
and application to understand the material in each content area.

To ensure that you and your child have a great Kindergarten experience, it is important that we
maintain a strong communication. Each month you will receive a calendar and newsletter to
inform you about our weekly themes, class activities, and important events in the classroom. On
the first day of school, your child will receive a Friday Folder to bring any information home that
is given to them. I encourage Parents/Guardians to sign up for the Electronic Friday Folder
option on the school web page, this will allow our class to go paperless for most communication.
Another opportunity to learn about your childs school and classroom is Back to School Night. If
you are unable to attend Families Around the World, I would highly recommend attending this
event. Back-to-School Night is scheduled for Thursday,September 25
th
at 7pm. Please mark
your calendars for this deeper introduction to the school community.
If you or your child have any questions or concerns you can contact me by email:
[email protected] or via. phone at (908)-930-6489. I look forward to meeting you and
your child and hope to learn more about your cultural background! See you in September!
Sincerely,
Miss. Hegenauer
