WHAT IS A BLUE HOSE?“ABlueHoseisafierceScotch-Irishwarrior.IfyouhaveeverseenthemovieBraveheart,youhaveseenatrueBlueHose.” Despitethisdepiction, itstillhasbeenaskedmanytimeswherePresbyterian College received its Blue Hose nickname. Several rumorsexistandRayFrankinhisbook,“What’sInANickname”delved into the subject. Frank discovered that there were many opinions.OnestoryhaditthatthePresbyterianScotch-Irishworeblue stockings in the Puritan beginnings of our country. Another said thatafiercewar-likebandofScotch-IrishnamedtheHosepaintedtheirentirebodiesbluebeforegoingintobattle.Yet,probablythetruestoryliesinaletterdatedJune15,1935,writtenbythenPCathleticdirector Walter Johnson to an inquiring English professor in Virginia ...(quotingfromWalterJohnson’sletter)‘Itwasaboutthesecondorthirdyear,1915,ifIrememberright.Ithinkithappenedthisway:Ichangeduniformcolorstoblue,wearingbluestockingsandjerseys,and some sports writer started calling in his articles the Presbyterian CollegeteamstheBlueStockings.”...inlateryears“Stocking”be-cameabbreviatedto“theHose,”particularlyinnewspaperheadlines,andwasmoreorlessofficiallyadoptedbythestudentbodyinthe1950’s. All the PC media guides since 1996 continued to elaborate on the issue, quotinganarticlebyBenHayHammetentitled“TheSpirtofPC.”ThepiecebyHammetarticulatedthat,“Johnsonalwaysinsistedon the fact that his players wear long blue socks similar to stockings (afterall, therewereWhiteSoxandRedSoxinbaseball). Coach Johnson’s explanation may simply be coincidental to the factthatthephrase“BlueStockingPresbyterian”goesbackinfor-mallyquiteafewyearsinthedenomination’shistory.”Nevertheless,PC’s athletic nickname was shortened to Blue Hose in 1954.
