Reaching Out with Nurturing Love to All God’s People
Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost
August 14, 2016 | Worship10 am
Presbyterian Church of the Roses
Christ came humbling himself,
Came loving the poor, the hungry, the lonely.
Christ came loving–
This Lord of Life.
This living, loving Lord.
O Lord, open our eyes to see the Pharisee within us.
Open our ears that we might hear the prophecy
Of the possibility of change.
Open the church doors that we might follow
Our living, loving Lord
Out into the marketplace.
Excerpt from the poem, The Lord of Life, by Ann Weems
First time here? We are happy to have you visit with us today and hope
that your worship experience is blessed. Please pick up a free visitor bag in
the narthex. All are invited for coffee and fellowship in Bowen Hall after the
service. Children with you? Activity materials for young worshipers
are in the entry way. Child care (2-3yrs) and Sunday School are provided during
the service. Infants with a parent may enjoy our quiet room while listening to the
service. Assistance needed? The ushers have large print bulletins and hearing
devices for you.

Remembering our covenant, we come in faithfulness!
By faith, we gather, by faith, we praise God!
Let us worship God with faith, hope, and joy together!
*HYMN #31 “Let Us With A Gladsome Mind” by Attr. John Antes, c 1790
CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER (responsively) (Based on Psalm 139)
Creating God, we gather in your name to serve you.
We give thanks that there is a small spark of God within us.
Kindle that small spark into a flame of love and service.
Sustaining God, we gather in your name to bless your church.
We celebrate the loving presence of God at work here and in our lives.
May Christ’s loving presence be the strong connection in our lives together.
Nurturing God, we gather in your name to do your will.
We rejoice that you teach us about love and forgiveness, reaching out to neighbor
and stranger.
As we grow together in faith, trust and love for you, may our obedience and
service bring honor and glory to your Holy Name. In Jesus Christ we pray.
Amen.
WORDS OF AFFIRMATION (responsively)
God of justice, your word is light and truth. Shine your face on us to restore us, that
we may walk in your way, seeking justice and doing good.
In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Alleluia! Amen.

want to see you; to see you high and lifted up, shining in the light of your glory.
Pour out your power and love as we sing “Holy, holy, holy.” Holy, holy, holy.
Holy, holy, holy. Holy, holy, holy, I want to see you.

*HYMN#488 “I Was There To Hear Your Borning Cry” by John Ylvisaker, 1985
PRAYER OF THE PEOPLE (responsively)
God of all the nations, you rescued your people out of the Red Sea
and encouraged Rahab to save your servants; you rescue the lowly and needy from
injustice and tribulation.
Surround us with so great a cloud of witnesses that we may have faith to live
by your word in our time, courage to persevere in the race set before us, and
endurance in the time of trial.
We praise your abiding guidance, O God, for you sent us Jesus, our Teacher and
Messiah, to model for us the way of love for the whole universe.
We offer these prayers of love on behalf of ourselves and our neighbors, on
behalf of your creation and our fellow creatures.
(Silent intercessory prayers for others)
Redeeming Sustainer, pour out your strength and courage upon us,
that by faith we will make you real to those who do not know you, not only in our
concern for others, but by serving them generously and faithfully, in the name of
Jesus Christ, our Lord, who taught us to pray saying: THE LORD’S PRAYER
*HYMN #730 “I Sing a Song of the Saints of God” by John H. Hopkins
*BENEDICTION
POSTLUDE: Four For His Glory “Wade in the Water” arranged by Mark Hayes
Members of today’s men’s quartet, Four For His Glory are Brian Bertoli, John Hall, Bill Morgan, Chuck Van Deventer. They are accompanied by Janet Bertoli and Althea Wright.
Did you know? HYMN#730 “I Sing a Song of the Saints of God” by John H. Hopkins, 1940 Despite the quaintness of some of the language in this text, it has an important message to communicate about the down to earth ordinariness of the holy people of God at all times and places. The tune name honors the island in Vermont’s Lake Champlain where the composer lived.
