In addition to writing and publishing over 6,000 hymns, she published three volumes of poetry, wrote many secular songs and was an inspirational speaker. She considered all this as an answer to her prayer. In her autobiography, she says that often people would tell her that she could not do something or go somewhere because she was blind. Her response from a young age was to “creep away alone and kneel and ask God, if I was not one of His children; and if in all His creation there was not a little place for me.” She said, “I seemed to hear Him say, „Do not be discouraged little one, the time shall come when you will be happy and useful even in your blindness.” This amazing woman‟s legacy lives on. Look at any hymnal and you will see that the hymns she wrote are still being sung today. Hymns such as Blessed Assurance, Rescue the Perishing, All the Way My Savior Leads Me, and To God Be the Glory. Fanny considered her life blessed. She gave away most of what she earned. To the very end of her life she continued to sing God‟s praises. She was a frequent speaker in the churches of all denominations in New York and Connecticut. In her later years, she worked as a home missionary in the roughest part of New York. Her message was always that God has a place for you no matter your circumstances, no matter your life. In the hymn, All the Way My Savior Leads me, she writes, “For I know whatever befalls me, Jesus doeth all things well.” For me, this line captures her philosophy of life. She believed it and lived it with every fiber of her being. Through her millions have come to know the love and grace of Jesus. My prayer is that we would all know such faith and confidence in God. Many Blessings, Terry

Presbyterian „Connection‟ October 2011 Volume 18 Issue 10

From the Pen of Reverend Terry

For most of the summer, I have been living with the blind hymn writer, Fanny Crosby. Not

physically, of course, as she died in 1915. She has been occupying a space in my mind and

heart, as I have been preparing to portray her for the PW Fall Festival. By the time you

read this the Festival/Brunch will be over. You will know or have heard if I did her

justice.

Living with Fanny has had an impact on me. I have learned that she had a living sense of

humor and a fierce streak of independence. In an age where opportunities for women

without handicaps were limited, she was a success. In addition to writing and publishing

over 6,000 hymns, she published three volumes of poetry, wrote many secular songs and

was an inspirational speaker. She considered all this as an answer to her prayer.

In her autobiography, she says that often people would tell her that she could not do

something or go somewhere because she was blind. Her response from a young age was to

“creep away alone and kneel and ask God, if I was not one of His children; and if in all His

creation there was not a little place for me.” She said, “I seemed to hear Him say, „Do not

be discouraged little one, the time shall come when you will be happy and useful even in

your blindness.”

This amazing woman‟s legacy lives on. Look at any hymnal and you will see that the hymns

she wrote are still being sung today. Hymns such as Blessed Assurance, Rescue the

Perishing, All the Way My Savior Leads Me, and To God Be the Glory.

Fanny considered her life blessed. She gave away most of what she earned. To the very

end of her life she continued to sing God‟s praises. She was a frequent speaker in the

churches of all denominations in New York and Connecticut. In her later years, she

worked as a home missionary in the roughest part of New York. Her message was always

that God has a place for you no matter your circumstances, no matter your life.

In the hymn, All the Way My Savior Leads me, she writes, “For I know whatever befalls

me, Jesus doeth all things well.” For me, this line captures her philosophy of life. She

believed it and lived it with every fiber of her being. Through her millions have come to

know the love and grace of Jesus. My prayer is that we would all know such faith and

confidence in God.

Many Blessings,

Terry

I‟m excited about our worship in October. On the 2nd Rev. Bill Gilbraith and I will be leading worship

for World Communion Sunday. Bill is the Executive Presbyter of the Presbytery of Arkansas. We are

blessed to have him visit us this month.

On the October 9th, 23rd and 30th we will continue our sermon series on Philippians. Paul wrote this

letter of encouragement, inspiration and gratitude while he was imprisoned in Rome.

October 9th is also our second Sunday potluck. This month the elders and I will host the meal. Come

on out and enjoy.

The third Sunday in October (16th), we will celebrate God‟s glorious creation with a casual service in

the South parking lot. Yes, it‟s time for the Blessing the Animals. All furry, feathered and finny pets

are welcome at this casual outdoor service. All we ask is that dogs and cats be on leashes for their

safety. As this is the third Sunday of the month we will receive the offering for the food pantry.

You might want to donate pet food or treats to the food pantry in gratitude for your pet‟s

companionship.

On the fifth Sunday we will celebrate All Saint‟s Day. I have it on good authority that Millie plans to

join us for a few moments. Later that evening, we will join with the other congregations in the area

for the fifth Sunday Sing at Christ by the Lake Lutheran Church. Please make plans now to attend.

Opportunities for Bible Study in October include the Adult Sunday School every Sunday morning at

9:00 am. This month the Doc will be leading the class in studying the Song of Solomon and Proverbs.

I will be teaching our youth and children‟s Sunday School class at 9:00 am. In October, we will

continue watching and discussing animated presentations of Old Testament stories. I am also

teaching the PW Bible Study, Confessing the Beatitudes on Thursdays at 11:00 am.

The session has a busy schedule next month as well. There is a joint elder training session with the

Yellville, Gamaliel, and Mountain Home churches in Mountain Home. On the 11th, the session is

planning a work day to look at how the recent changes to the Book of Order will impact us and to

prepare the budget. This is in addition to the Session meeting on the third Tuesday of the month.

The nominating committee will be looking for a few good men and women to serve on the session, on

the board of deacons and on the nominating committee for next year. Please begin now praying about

these openings. Is God calling you to serve? If so, please let Vicki know.

Oh, I almost forgot. Presbytery meets at First Pres in Conway on the 14th and 15th of the month.

Pat Erlewine, Sandy Erickson, Jini Sass and I are currently planning to attend.

This is by no means everything going on in October. I‟m sure I‟ve forgotten something. PW is busy

making preparations for the Baked Potato Bash on the 22nd. Please see their article for more

information. The Men will meet for Breakfast at 8:00 am at the Village Wheel on the 8th.

Now, take a deep breath and thank God for the blessings in store for us this month.

cut back.

book cart for some great Spiritual reading. We also have some new fiction

books: book #2 Kentucky Brothers series by Wanda Brunstetter- THE

HEALING, book #5 in the Bowers Files series by Steven James - QUEEN,

the final book in the Ada‟s House series by Cindy Woodsmall - THE HARVEST

OF GRACE, DARK PURSUIT by Brandilyn Collins, SWEET WATERS by Julie

MOTHER‟S HOPE, #2 HER DAUGHTER‟S DREAM; and The Rose Trilogy by

Beverly Lewis - #1 THE THORN, #2 THE JUDGMENT, #3 THE MERCY.

The book of the month is HARVEST OF GRACE.

“Although Sylvia Fisher recognizes that most Old Order Amish women her

age spend their hours managing a household and raising babies, she has just

one focus--tending and nurturing the herd on her family‟s dairy farm. But

when a dangerous connection with an old beau forces her to move far from

home, she must concentrate on a new start and pour her energy into reviving

a debt-ridden farm.”

”Can she find relief from the echoes of her past…or will they shape her

future forever?”

Enjoy the books.

Presbyterian Women (PW)

It‟s hard to believe we are entering the last quarter of 2011! What a year it has been for PW! We have been delighted with the

attendance and participation at our monthly breakfast/luncheon meetings at the Village Wheel and very thankful for the strong

support of our church family. Hostesses in Sept. were PAM HOBART and AMY JOHNSON. IRENE BERE presented the

devotion. We look forward to another good attendance at the Oct. 3rd meeting when PAM and JEAN LYON will again be

hostesses and the devotion will be by AMY JOHNSON.

At the Sept. 6th meeting we were pleased to have 17 women present. BETTY AARON, MISSION PROJECT CHAIR,

presented a motion - a recommendation of the Board (Coordinating Team) for the distribution of a portion of the July 9th Ice

Cream Social Fundraiser as follows: Flippin Schools - Shoes $200 and for the Lunch Program $100, Bull Shoals Food Pantry

$100.00 and for the Bridge Bash 2011 $100.00 FOR A TOTAL DISTRIBUTION OF $600.00. the motion was seconded and

carried. (The Bridge Bash, a fundraiser for the Norfork Food Pantry Bank took place Sat. Sept. 24th. Area Food Pantries (incl.

Bull Shoals) and other qualifying agencies, purchase the bulk of canned goods, etc., at greatly reduced prices from the Food

Bank. Information about the fundraiser has been in the last two issues of the “Connection”.) BETTY reported that she asked

Wal-Mart (Flippin) if the store would consider giving a donation for the Flippin School Shoes fund. Much to her delight, she

was given a Gift Card for an additional $200.00! Well done!

Our Baked Potato Bash Bash (B.P.B.) Fundraiser will be here shortly - Sat. Oct. 22nd - 4 to 6 p.m. - JINI SASS, CHAIR.

Tickets @$5.50 will be available by Oct. 1st, flyers will be posted in Bull Shoals, Lakeview, and Midway, and a sign-up sheet

for toppings, desserts will be posted in the office. Please let JINI know if you can help in any way - selling tickets, helping to

set up, working on the 22nd, etc. At the Nov. 7th meeting we will decide to which missions we will distribute the profits.

REV. TERRY encouraged the ladies to join PW‟s Weekly Bible Study „Confessing the Beatitudes” which meets in Memorial

Hall on Thurs. at 11a.m. Ladies, come, bring your Bibles, and if you‟d like, bring a friend. This Study is open to all women in

the community. (Note: no Study, Sept. 29th.)

We also voted to purchase 100 cups for the Kitchen as we no longer have enough cups for large gatherings. MARY KERR,

Treasurer, will work with ARABELLA RICHARDSON, Church MEMORIAL HALL Moderator, on this project.

A Nominating Committee consisting of BETTY AARON, ARABELLA RICHARDSON and GLORIA WILES was elected.

Responsibility; to present a slate of officers for 2012 at the November 7th meeting.

Next month you will hear from MARY KEER AND AMY JOHNSON all about our Brunch of Sept. 27th for other Bull

Shoals area church women. We wish you could all hear REV. TERRY‟S presentation of „Jesus Doeth All Things Well” -

depicting the life of Fanny Crosby, blind hymn writer.

us on Mon., Oct. 3rd at 11:30 a.m. for a breakfast/luncheon meeting at the Village Wheel. Please sign the Reservations list

MISSION MINUTE

OCTOBER-2011

“I have been blessed with a unique ministry since 1987--I serve both as an Army

chaplain and as a parish pastor, sometimes at the same time, sometimes separately. The

soldiers and their families whom I have served have taught me how to speak and walk

with those who live outside the organized church. My parish ministry has provided me a

home base, a living church community whose prayers and support have made my ministry

possible.

In both groups I‟ve found that two of the universal human desires are the longing for

community and the desire for a personal encounter with the holy, and when these two

come together, amazing things can happen. Jesus is in the business of helping people find

their way home to him, and evangelism is the process that simply allows the invitation to

meet Jesus to shine forth.

In Luke 5, Jesus calls his first disciples and tells them, “Fear not, from now on you will

be fishers of men.” This call to “fear not” has been God‟s great call all my life. I believe

that God calls us all to:

Fear not to come in the name of Jesus to a broken world

Fear not to invite others into community in Christ

Fear not to call people to deepen themselves by becoming disciples of Christ

Fear not to try new ideas and empower others to step out to attempt new things as well

Fear not to give people the right to ask questions and investigate new answers

Fear not to share the story of your transformed life

Fear not to allow the Holy Spirit to work”.

- Rev. Jan Koczera, Associate Pastor of Evangelism, First Presbyterian Church, Hamilton Squire, New Jersey; Chaplain and Lieutenant Colonel, New Jersey Army National Guard.

Daily Readings By Jim Freeman

Pastor at Broadmoor Presbyterian Church - Shreveport, LA. Used with his permission

My thoughts on the readings from the Daily Lectionary as found in the ‘Book of

Common Worship: Daily Prayer” of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) James 3:13-4:12 Though the letter of James is full of exhortations and encouragement to show one's faith by one's actions, there is also this practical reminder. "And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace for those who make peace" (James 3:18). I say that this is practical, but in truth it only makes sense when viewed within the larger context of the Christian faith. Jesus Christ the Prince of Peace calls all disciples to set aside violence and retribution and instead to show concern and compassion. When we have let go of our desire for power or authority, when we have eschewed the use of force to promote our faith, then, says the writer of James, we may live in peace and righteousness. The Garden of Eden was such a place, and it was through disobedience that humanity lost the opportunity to dwell there. But Jesus offers another way if we will only follow him. Take up the cross of Jesus, express peace and justice, and live as faithful followers. Then, and only then can we know a peace that the world is incapable of giving. Prayer: O God, help us to live in your peace and to share that peace with the world. In Jesus' name. Amen.
