1. INTRODUCTION AND BRIEF HISTORY

At Prerna, a group of professionals work with the children with neuro developmental

disorders. It is a paediatrics rehabilitation centre established by Cantonment Board Kanpur,

which works for high risk infants and children with brain injuries and development

disabilities. The centre also provides special education to children suffering from cerebral

palsy and mental retardation, including language and communication, stimulation

programme, vocational training etc.

Prerna - School for Special Children was opened on 18-12-2011 by Cantonment Board with

the strength of 8 children which has grown substantially in quick time to reach the present

strength of 110 children.

Prerna Special School was inaugurated by Shri Ashok Kumar Harnal IDES Director General

Defence Estates, Ministry of Defence Government of India on 18th

Dec. 2011.

2. DETAILS OF STRENGTH YEARWISE

During the time of inauguration the school started with the strength of 08

beneficiaries.

The special needs of 08 students in 2011 was looked after by the team of specially

trained three teachers.

3. CONSTRUCTION OF NEW BUILDING THROUGH MPLAD FUND

The biggest resource constraint of Prerna School was lack of an independent building as the

Prerna School was opened in a two room block constructed in the premises of Muir Road

Primary School.

Therefore efforts were made for making provision for an independent building. The local

Rajya Sabha M.P. Shri Mahendra Mohan approved a sum of Rs 20 lacs for an independent

building.

It was decided to construct the new building in the Sy. No 546 admeasuring 0.84 Acres, Class

'C' land, at the site of abandoned old Khapramohal School.

The Bhoomi poojan for the new building of Prerna was performed on 16.12.2013 on the

auspicious Defence Estates Day.

The new building comprises of 04 rooms, separate toilet block for Girls and Boys and

composite sensory integration room.

The new school building was inaugurated on 3rd

March 2015 by Brig Pramit Saxena, SM,

President, Cantonment Board, Kanpur Cantt.

4. VISIT BY CEO AND OFFICE STAFF TO DIFFERENT CENTRES FOR SPECIAL

CHILDREN:-

Visit of Kripa School by CEO and Staff and visit to Asha Kiran , Allahabad Army Special School

were undertaken to better understand the functioning of Special Schools.

5. INITIATIVES TAKEN FOR IMPROVEMENT IN SCHOOL

ENGAGEMENT OF ADDITIONAL STAFF

New professionals introduced in Prerna in 2014-15 and 2015-16.

INCREASE IN SCHOOL TIMINGS FROM 3 HRS TO 5 HRS IN 2014-15.

Earlier the School timing was 0900 Hrs to 1200 Hrs which has been changed now from 0750

Hrs to 1300 Hrs. The timings were increased to provide better services and educational

facilities to the special children. The timetable was revised accordingly and implemented.

MID-DAY MEAL FACILITY

Mid –Day meal facility was introduced by the Board to cater to the nutritional requirements

of the special children in April, 2014 on an experimental basis. Mid-day meal was provided

from April, 2014 to Dec, 2014.

UNIFORMS.

Uniforms were provided to the students of the Prerna School for the first time in the year

2014-15.

PROVISION OF TWO ADDITIONAL VANS

Two additional vans were provided by the Board to facilitate easy movement of the special

children. 28 children are benefited by this provision.

IMPROVEMENT IN INFRASTRUCTURE LIKE GENSETS, A.C. ETC.

Genset, Projector and A.C. etc. has been provided by the Board to Prerna School.

PLAYING EQUIPMENTS

Playing equipment have been provided in Prerna – School in the year 2015-16 as there is

ample space and availability of playground/lawn.

SECURITY GUARD AND GARDNER

Security Guard and Gardner have been provided in the school.

MID-DAY MEAL UNIFORM DISTRIBUTION

SENSORY PATH WAY

Sensory path has been constructed for autistic children.

DEDICATED ROOM FOR AUTISTIC CHILDREN

STRENGTHENING OF PHYSIOTHERAPY DEPARTMENT

Following measures have been initiated in the year 2014-15 for strengthening the

Physiotherapy department run by Prerna School

Physical and functional assessment files of each child.

Quarterly assessment of each child.

Individualized training for in-patient children.

Out Patient department for 0 to 5 years.

Gross motor activities individually for inpatient children.

Home based programme for parents to cater the child’s needs.

ISSUE OF DISABILITY CERTIFICATE: The matter of issuing of Physically

Handicapped/Disability certificate for the students studying at Prerna School was taken up

with the CMO & special camp was organised for issuing Physically

Handicapped/Disability certificate, 40 students were provided disability certificate from

Ursala Hospital Kanpur in February 2015.

ISSUE OF RAILWAY CONCESSION CERTIFICATES: 40 Certificates were issued

to students of Prerna School in February 2015.

ORTHOTICS: Orthotics were provided to 7 students at concessional rates in March 2015.

ACADEMICS DEPARTMENT: Various initiatives have been taken in the last 1 year to

bring about necessary improvements in the Academics department.

USE OF NEW TEACHING METHODS/AIDS: Wall Paintings in the entire school

building have been made to educate the children regarding alphabets, rhymes, stories,

seasons, fruits etc. and also to make the class rooms attractive.

TEACHING WITH AUDIO VISUAL AIDS

Since 2014 - 15 audio visual aids and projectors have been provided for imparting

effective education.

Class wise categorisation has been introduced according to developmental age 3 to 5

years, 5 to 8 years, 8 to 12 years and 12 to 14 years.

QUARTERLY ASSESSMENT OF EACH CHILD: - The same is ensured to monitor

the progress of the children.

supervision and control and also to ensure better evaluation of functioning of schools.

vocational classes. The rooms are being sponsored by Rotomac Industries Pvt. Ltd.

SUPPORT UNDER CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Shri Vikram Kothari, Chairman & MD Rotomac Industries, visited the school in April,

2015 and observed the functioning of the school and offered to construct 2 big rooms (27'

x 22' each) in Prerna School premises. The Bhoomi Poojan was performed on 15th June

2015, by Mrs Kothari and the rooms are under construction.

Status of two rooms under construction as on 30-07-2015.

The Board has requested the Kothari family to further offer assistance for the construction

of a multipurpose hall and to provide school bus which is under consideration.

DONATION AND GRANTS BY BANKS AND OTHER INSTITUTES:- In March

2015, SBI donated Electronic Wheel Chair, Walking Aid, Cerebral Palasy Specialised

Chair, Hearing Aid. HDFC Bank, Birhana Road Branch has agreed to provide Computer

System with Internet connection to Prerna School in June 2015.

6. INTEGRATION PROGRAMME

In last one year, 06 Students Hasan, Vishu, Bilal, Khushi, Naved and Priya have

shown considerable improvement and joined Normal Schools.

7. ACHIEVEMENTS

1. Special Olympics organized by Rotary Club in March 2014 and 25 students participated

and won 05 gold medals, 10 silver and 05 bronze medals.

2. In the drawing competition organized by Dainik Jagran. Manas secured 2nd position.

3. Preeti won consolation prize on 02-10-2014 in Drawing Competition held at MG

Park.

4. In the Station Diwali Mela, 8 students participated.

5. Consolation prize won by students of Prerna School on function organized by

Abiyudaya Society on the occasion of World Disabled Day (03-12-2015) in CSJM

University Campus.

6. Third Prize was won by students of Prerna School in Football Special Olympic held on

20-03-2015 at Green Park Stadium.
