Prepositions of PlacePrepositions of place tell where something is.These are common prepositions of place:behind between in in front of
near next to on under
Now look at the picture and try to figure out the meanings of prepositionsThe cat is on the table.The dog is under the table.The keys are between the cat and the
vase.The bird is in the cage.The keys are next to the cat.The book is behind the vase.The cat is near the flowers.There are flowers in front of the book.
Very Important Notes:Near and next to are not the same.
Look at the picture on the previous slide: The vase is next to the keys. It is near the keys,
too. The vase is near the cat, but it is not next to the
cat.Between requires the existence of three
things.The keys are between the cat and the vase.The bank is between the cinema and the café.
Prepositions of TimeWhen we talk about time we often use the
prepositions: in, on or at.• We use in + months (April) seasons (summer)+ years
(2009)
in + the morning, the afternoon, the evening• We use on + days of the week (Saturday, etc.)
on + date (15 May)• We use at + the exact time ( 2 o’clock)
at + night
at + noon
at + the weekend
Consider the following examples:Dinner is usually at 9 o’clock in the evening.Our English class is at 10:00.The news is on TV at eleven o’clock at night.I am going shopping at the weekend.She graduated from high school in 2007.We normally go to Lebanon in summer.
