Definitions: The term preposition comes from two words pre

which means before and posit (ponere) to place, iftaken together it means to place before.

Part of speech that shows the relationship between anoun or a pronoun with other words in the sentence.

Is a word that express a relationship between a noun or

a pronoun and other word in the sentence.

the squirrel in the tree

the preposition in shows therelationship between the squirrel and

the tree

The book is on the table.

The book is beneath the table.The book is leaning against the table.

The book is beside the table.

In each of the preceding sentences, a prepositionlocates the noun book in space or in time.

Different functions of Preposition1. It shows direction and motion.

Example:

He moves towards his target.

She walks around the car.

They drove through the tunnel.

Example:

He served the food on the dining table.

My mother went to Prague.

He waited in the bus.

Example:

Just text me between 5 o clock to 6:00.

Does the concert begin at 6:00 pm?

We use at for the time of the day.

at 6 oclock, at noontime, at sunrise

We use on for days and dates on Monday, on November 14, 1958,

on Valentines Day

We use in for longer periods (months, years, seasons in December, in the past, in the future, in

1968, in the 1990s

Note that we usually ask what time are you going out?,we say in the morning, in the evening, on Fridaymorning, on Sunday afternoon

We do not use at/on/in before last/next/this/every

A prepositional phrase is different froma compound preposition because in a

compound preposition there are noobjects, only prepositions.

Note when a preposition is alone in sentence, itbecomes an adverb.

Example

Adverb: She came along.

Preposition: We walk along Juan Luna St.
