Letter From the Director

Mr. Kucuker

Greetings! It’s very exciting to see the students settling into school routines, and feeling comfortable in their school day. I have been observing that our students adapting the new faces, organizational strategies, systems and routines and of course, learning! As the new principal of Horizon Science Academy Dayton High School, I have been managing the issues to improve the school climate to set standards and expectations high. We as a team all are, to focus on raising expectations. This will help reorient our students to think about their self-worth, academic achievement, school pride, and school climate. I believe that we have successful students who feel responsible for modeling expectations of excellence. The teachers of Horizon are fostering a very positive environment and encouraging students to set goals to make college careers. In order to tackle low academic achievement, we planned and created two days after-school tutoring classes, one day after school club activities, weekend programs like IMP, ACT, and parent involvement programs. Dear Horizon Families! You are all welcome to Saturday school which is specifically designed for parents. You won’t want to miss Microsoft Office Course at the school of your children. These are only some of the steps we are taking, to reach our long term academic goals. I would like you to know that we are going to work harder to move our school from a "priority" school to a "school of distinction" within a few years. As the time goes by, the systems, understandings, approaches, operations, conceptions and perceptions of education have been undergoing multiple changes. We have been making all the modifications and renewing our policies, related to the educational reforms. The measurement criteria of academic achievements of students may be changed by the state, but I know our test scores will be higher with our dedicated teachers. Please check our school website often at http://hs.horizondayton.org/ for important calendar dates and events. My thanks go to the Horizon Faculty and Staff and the Horizon families for such a smooth and successful start to the school year! If you have any questions or concerns about anything, please do not hesitate to contact me at 937-281 1480. See you soon at Horizon! Respectfully,

Letter From the Assistant Director

Our student handbook is a great resource for information on topics such as arrival and dismissal procedures, cafeteria information, attendance, and much more. We offer a rigorous, college-preparatory curriculum for all students, including a wide array of elective, AP, and College courses. We are continuously reviewing our curriculum and expanding it to meet the needs of our students. Our goal is to provide all students with the opportunity to succeed in all their many school experiences. I look forward to working with you this school year. Together, we will make it a great year!

Cordially,

Mr. Kiydal

Mr. Kiydal

Dear HSA Family:

I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Nate Emru Kiydal. I am the new Vice Principal at HSA. We are excited to have you as partners in your students` education. Here at HSA, we strive to provide our students with many worthwhile learning opportunities, which will help them grow and mature. Our staff is committed to fostering a positive learning environment. Our monthly calendar and newsletter, which goes home at the beginning of each month, will keep you up to date on the latest activities and events. I also encourage you to read over all our school policies and procedures that will be coming home on the first day of school in your child’s first day folders, as well as the information that is enclosed with this letter.

Letter From the Dean of Students

Mr. Jackson

WE have taken an aggressive approach to the 2013-2014 school years as it relates to school wide discipline. While spending countless hours we found that there were a number of concerns that were very misleading in its origin. Collaboratively the Administration implemented a new and clearer guide to our constitution, The Student Handbook. We the staff have gone over the student handbook during our new student orientation, each teacher has explained the same system with their classes during the first weeks of school, the staff has also meet with all of the students of HSA to explain and reinforce any misunderstandings of the student handbook. We have also added In School Suspension (ISS) to the dimension of our discipline that includes community service.

We will have a great year

Sincerely: Mr. Jackson

Dean of Students

Dear Parents:

I would like to welcome you all to a new and exciting school year. As the Dean of Students I have been granted the opportunity to work with both middle school and high school. During my previous year I began learning all of our students and creating mental notes here at Horizon Science Academy that I thought would better our students and ensure a reasonable and rational staff student relationship with each of our students.

We are off to a good start in the art room already! Ninth grade visual art has been learning all about line. I have been truly impressed with the level of creativity many students have been exhibiting. De’Ajah Edwards was the first to earn a spot on the front board for her spectacularly meticulous line design. In sculpture we jumped right in to the 3D art with a rolled paper sculpture project. Devon Jones is modeling his sculpture in the picture above. We had our first critique and the students did very well. The graphic design class has been learning about visual balance in composition and has completed some very nice shape paintings. I look forward every day to my time with them in the afternoon. In AP Art History we have studied Pre-Historic Art and are currently studying Ancient Near Eastern Art.

The students are learning study skills including reading for academics, note taking, word analysis, test taking strategies and open forum discussion. We are planning a trip to the Dayton Art Institute in November with the AP History class. I am proud to be a part of the Horizon teaching staff and look forward to a great year.

Visual Arts Teacher: Sarah Wise

The Language Arts department is excited to announce that each student at Horizon Science Academy Dayton High School will have the opportunity to use a new reading program this year called Accelerated Reader. We will use this program in every grade to monitor the students’ reading skills. The ability to track each student’s skills will help the teachers ensure that the students are progressing toward college and career readiness. The Accelerated Reader program assesses the student’s reading level, sets practice reading goals that are personalized for each student, allows comprehension quizzes for each book, and displays instant feedback. This tool will be a wonderful resource for students because Accelerated Reader creates an action plan that is individualized for each student to help improve reading levels, reading comprehension, and increase each student’s confidence. The Accelerated Reader program will also be used by our English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher with the student whose first language is not English. Using this program with the English Language Learners (ELLs) to create a plan that will help them improve their fluency as well as learn new vocabulary words while reading a variety of stories will allow them to excel and reach these goals. Since each student will have a personalized account on this program, it can be accessed at home so parents are able to see the process their students make. We will begin using this program very soon, and we look forward to the positive effects it will have on our students!

What is IMP?IMP program is a multi-faceted program, designed to prepare selected students to top Colleges. This program designed after a summer seminar at Harvard College on college admissions. What they need from a student is what we added into our program; Great academicals skills, great personality, multiple skills and a never ending curiosity towards knowledge. It is not always perfect scores but most of the time a great personality. We realized that our school has strong potential in terms of academics, on top of it we decided to step forward and move toward giving our graduates a well-rounded graduation resume for top colleges. Our primary goal is to give an extra edge and reach to our good students so they could be eligible more resources in their college life. Next step is giving the required environment to flourish their untapped skills.

IMP is a free college-based mentoring program for selected HSA students that will focus on contributing to the academic achievement and personal development of its participating students.

The Program consists of multiple disciplines and activities combined into one package by working in small groups with the mentorship of HSA Volunteer Teacher. Each Mentoring group will have approximately 4 or 5 students and the Volunteer Mentor Teachers will follow the IMP curriculum with HSA IMP Coordinator. This program will have developing and continuously improving curriculum and instructional system.

What is the purpose of the Program?

IMP is primarily focused to achieve success in terms of academics required to solidify admissions to selective colleges. The Program also has a major ingredient of guidance to secure the character and personality part of the college admission and provides highly motivated and enriching activities. Along the way students will be guided for Scholarships and Awards applications for colleges such as the Congressional Award.

What does this program offers to the students? IMP covers 4 major areas; these areas applied to

every grade with different levels of intensity and content.

Academic: This area involves excellence at ACT at 10th and 11th Grades. At 9th Grade reading camps and programs with vocabulary building sessions are major focus areas. At senior year this area involves college level class support, in depth college majors, and industry knowledge (professional certifications etc.)

Athletics: This program involves minor involvements of hiking, running, push up, pull up, and sit up to major involvements of Soccer, Basketball, or Wrestling. Goal is to dress student’s background with athletics as well as help to the physical and confidence development of the student. 9th and 10th grades have more focus on this portion.

Character Education: This portion of the program involves personal development. Poster activity, book report cards, essay writing or research on historical role models and character traits like honesty, integrity are major focus areas.

It also involves camping and cottage programs to develop self-reliance and team spirit skills. This phase is covered at same level for all grade levels.

Mrs. McNutt

Instructional Coach

Hello! My name is Kendra McNutt and I am the Instructional Coach for the Dayton/ Cincinnati Region. I have been with Concept Schools and Horizon Science Academy of Dayton for 4 years. I am a teacher and I was in the classroom for 6 years before transitioning to an administrative position. I live in Piqua, Ohio and enjoy a 40-90 minute drive every day to get to the school I will be working with that day.

Many feel that I am crazy for driving that far, but I do it because I believe in Horizon and Concept Schools, I believe that together with the parents, teachers, students and administrators we can make the Dayton/ Cincinnati Region the best in Concept Schools. I have enjoyed watching and getting to know the staff and students here at HSADHS and my goal is to help the teachers help the students become great learners and represent HSADHS among the other Concept schools, Dayton schools and our community.
