Who is this program for? Any engineering graduate student who:

• is seriously considering a career as a faculty member

• wants to improve teaching-presentation-professional skills

• wants detailed help applying for jobs in academia

• could benefit from individual mentoring for teaching skills

What is the time commitment?

1-1.5 hours per week in 2 one-semester seminars

• some outside preparation

• 15+ hours of mentored teaching

When is the program offered?

• New seminar series begins every SPRING quarter[The new SEMESTER version of the program will start in SPRING 2013]

Program format: two 1-semester seminars plus mentored teaching

• Seminar 1: Modern Teaching Techniques. Bloom’s taxonomy, syllabus creation, course management, learning styles, interacting effectively with students, active learning, managing student projects and teams, dealing with large classes, grading, teaching leadership, incorporating ethics into the curriculum, teaching evaluations, ABET accreditation. ENGR 9051, Spring Semester beginning in Spring 2013.

• Seminar 2: The Academic Profession. Presentation skills, preparing job application materials, web page and portfolio development, panel discussions with new faculty, mid-career faculty, and hiring committee members, effective mentoring, proposal writing, career skills. ENGR 9052, Fall Semester beginning in Fall 2013.

• Mentored Teaching. Work directly with an assigned faculty mentor to gain 15+ hours of teaching-related experience. ENGR 9053, Fall Semester beginning in Fall 2013.

CEAS PFF program / general university PFF program:

University PFF:• General program—all UC grad students• Explores a variety of teaching venues• Mentoring—40 hours• Earn certificate + credit hours

Engineering & Applied Science PFF:• For CEAS (and science) students exclusively• Mentors are typically engineering, applied science & computer science professors • Mentoring—15+ hours• Earn credit hours on transcript

COMBINED PROGRAM: Students can complete the CEAS program and and then earn the university certificate by leading a university PFF seminar (reading group) and completing additional hours of mentored teaching. See Prof. Purdy for details.
