According to the City’s recent Citizen Survey, 97 percent of participants believe Fort Collins is a great place to live. That doesn’t happen by accident, and local businesses, like yours, deserve recognition for your hard work and willingness to go the extra mile to make this community stand out. Fort Collins is receiving recognition at a national level. Time magazine recently dubbed Fort Collins as “America’s Most Satisfied City,” partly due to innovative programs like ClimateWise. Last year, ClimateWise welcomed 52 new businesses. Since 2000, ClimateWise business partners, which range from large to small organizations, have achieved a cumulative savings of nearly $83 million and avoided nearly 1.2 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions. Our community has made it clear that sustainability is an important core value. That’s thanks, in part, to the voter-approved Keep Fort Collins Great sales tax revenue that allows ClimateWise to offer resources and support to business partners. To complement our greenhouse gas reduction goals, the City strives to be a leader in innovation, and this year, we are placing a renewed emphasis on the “people,” or “social” side of sustainability. We’ve challenged our staff to understand what it really means to be a “world class” city…not just for a select few, but for all of our residents. Preparing for the Future 2013 Summary of AccomplishmentsIn thinking back, 2013 was a big year for Fort Collins—a year filled with many accomplishments.

With the combined efforts of the City and our business community, we are building a sustainable plan for the future that values the importance of the amazing environment we all love and enjoy here in Fort Collins. Thank you for your contributions and devoted passion.

Sincerely,

Darin Atteberry City Manager

ClimateWise, Business Smart ClimateWise is a free, voluntary program that helps businesses combine operational efficiency with greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction through conservation of water, waste, energy and transportation. These actions result in cost savings and added benefits to business partners, such as: • public recognition• technical assistance• ongoing business support• seminars• tools and resources for savings• peer networking opportunities• customer loyalty and employee pride

2013 at a Glance • ClimateWise grew by 52 business partners,

bringing the number of current partners to 362 (402 businesses historically have participated in the program – some have moved, closed their doors or consolidated locations). These businesses reduced 171,641 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e).

• Cost savings for businesses were nearly $15 million.

Partnerships People PowerPartner and student volunteers supported ClimateWise by logging more than 1,034 hours, valued at $23,187.00, in areas such as business phone calls, onsite partner project support, research, data analysis, and Advisory Committee planning and project implementation. This is a 32 percent increase over previous year’s volunteer hours. Increased participation can be attributed to process improvements, including the new volunteer opportunities webpage.

Leveraging ResourcesClimateWise continues to expand and strengthen educational offerings through its many partnerships: Colorado State University (CSU), Fort Collins Chamber, Northern Colorado Renewable Energy Society, US Green Building Council and many others. An outcome of this collaboration resulted in the creation of the Northern Colorado Sustainable Communities Collaborative, a regional group formed for ongoing collaboration that promotes adoption of sustainability knowledge, practices and demonstration.

Fort Collins Chamber and ClimateWise collaborated on the Green In Action series for another banner year.

2013 Partnership DemographicsPartners in the program employ nearly 38,192 employees, ranging from small one-employee businesses to CSU, the largest employer in Northern Colorado.

Building a Community: Strong Connections with Colorado State UniversityClimateWise staff connected with representatives from CSU’s fraternity and sorority Life, Associated Students of Colorado State University and Student Sustainability Center to develop service learning opportunities and assist with energy and waste reductions. They also worked with Department of Political Science graduate faculty and students to create practical learning opportunities that benefit students and the organization.

Two students from the CMMAP (Center for Multi-scale Modeling of Atmospheric Processes) summer internship program completed their project and presented Life Cycle Analysis: A Tool for Making Informed Decisions. The presentation educated ClimateWise partners on the complexities of four common business considerations to help them make informed and conscious decisions in their consumption. Case studies include: coffee production, Styrofoam alternatives, tissue vs. handkerchief use and electronic replacement.

Strategic Leadership: ClimateWise Advisory Committee Produces Plans, ProgramsAdvisory committees are core to the ClimateWise program structure and development. The 2013-2014 ClimateWise Advisory Committee consisted of three subcommittees. A total of 26 dedicated business partners helped ClimateWise staff increase the program’s effectiveness and impact on the Fort Collins community.

Advisory Committee goals are evaluated at the beginning of each year and subcommittees are formed based on the needs of the program. Subcommittee accomplishments include:

• Volunteer Committee launched a pilot program called the Business Support Volunteer program (BSVP). Through this program, valuable professional experiences are created for volunteers, and staff resources are leveraged by providing additional hands-on assistance to businesses. Accomplishments included the validation of BSVP demand among ClimateWise partners, development of a BSVP job description and participation agreements for partners and volunteers, the addition of the job description and application to the ClimateWise webpage, development of a volunteer recruitment resource list and the implementation of three BSVP pilot sites.

• Program Assistance Committee is a group of seasoned ClimateWise partners who review programmatic updates from staff and other committees, as well as the Social Superstars and Ambassador awards. During 2013, the committee developed a comprehensive

reference list of project ideas for business partners to implement. They also worked with the Ambassador Committee to support its social media messaging project.

• Ambassador/Mentor Committee supported business outreach and recruitment for the program as well as mentoring for existing ClimateWise partners. The team also coordinated the launch of the ClimateWise Facebook page and helped support program communications by providing assistance with ongoing messaging to partners with recognition.

Watch Advisory Committee video.

ClimateWise Social SuperstarsIn its second year, ClimateWise Social Superstars continued to gain traction among partners. There were 18 businesses that participated, which contributed to a data outcome of more than $80,000 in cash and $100,000 in non-cash services, all focused on positive social impacts. More than 7,800 hours (3.79 FTE equivalent) were dedicated and over 100 organizations received time, money or services through this program.*

In 2013, the ClimateWise newsletter Climate Wire showcased nine partner initiatives that were chosen through a peer selection process.

*Assumptions: totals represent a combination of actual reported data and an average of the answer range submitted. For example, if a participant was asked how many hours were dedicated and answered “5–9 hours”, 7 hours was represented for these totals.

Partner RecognitionAlong with the valuable ongoing assistance to help partners reduce GHG emissions and meet program levels, ClimateWise also provides partner recognition in various publications, radio spots, local cable television and community presentations. The more partners participate and earn higher levels, the more recognition they receive. Visit the ClimateWise website to learn more.

The Northern Colorado Business Report and Cambon Studios helped publish a Partner Profile magazine, highlighting business partner successes.

Educational Events and SeminarsClimateWise hosted educational events with a total of 722 attendees in 2013. Sponsorships and in-kind contributions reduced event venue costs by 51 percent.

ClimateWise partners contributed more than $26,380 to the program through sponsorship and services.

Annual Conference, Business Innovation FairClimateWise regionalized the Business Innovation Fair in 2013, bringing together business professionals and community members along the Front Range. Hosted by the cities of Fort Collins, Loveland and Longmont and Platte River Power Authority, attendees had the opportunity to learn about environmental stewardship and rebuilding sustainably post flood and fires. A panel discussion among Front Range city and county managers highlighted the opportunities for increased collaboration in fostering a resilient community. • Estes Park Town Administrator –

annually. Future projects using these dollars may include PV expansion on its campus and/or a deep retrofit of the facility’s HVAC system, which contributes to roughly 30 percent of the overall energy consumption.

Water ReductionArapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and Pawnee National Grasslands’ (ARP) green team members in Fort Collins were determined to reduce outside irrigation water use. They worked with the building’s property manager to adjust the irrigation schedule and controls. This no-cost action resulted in a savings of over 1,375,000 gallons of water in 2013, a 68 percent reduction. Watch partner video

Faith Evangelical-Free Church replaced 36 toilets in the facility with 1.28 gallon low-flow toilets. The church took advantage of rebates from Fort Collins Utilities to offset part of the project cost and will save an average of 13,052 gallons of water annually.

Transportation ReductionJax Outdoor Gear continues to offer a carbon credit reduction of $1 per day to employees who bike or walk to work and $0.50 per day to employees who use alternative transportation. Participating employees biked a total of 11,497 miles, walked 169 miles, carpooled 7,903 miles and rode 4,103 miles by bus. Watch partner video

Spirae employees tracked telecommuting miles in 2013 and avoided a total of over 1,600 vehicle miles by working from home.

Success in ActionWaste ReductionMountain Whitewater Descents (MWD) collected a variety of reused materials to remodel its bar and outdoor venue, including wood, steel and unique materials, such as a sail from a boat. Its team continues to repurpose and recycle materials. MWD works with customers around the world, which allows them to teach others to be more environmentally responsible and showcase their great conservation projects. Watch partner video

Jax Outdoor Gear and Jax Farm and Ranch have one of the most robust recycling programs reported for a mid-sized business. Both teams critically examine their waste streams and have been able to find a home for nearly every material. Watch partner video

Energy ReductionCargill replaced a large growth chamber used to grow research plants with two smaller chambers. The smaller growth chambers allow for improved operational efficiency and will save Cargill a minimum of $11,000 annually in energy costs, a reduction of 157,680 kilowatt-hours (kWh).

New Belgium Brewing began charging its owners a per-kWh tax on purchased electricity consumption at the same rate it was previously charged by the Fort Collins Utilities Green Energy Program. The money collected will be reserved for energy efficiency and onsite renewable energy projects at the brewery. It will help directly reduce New Belgium’s reliance on fossil fuels and results in setting aside roughly $200,000
