an Advent Calendar

We make gifts for friends and family.

Sometimes we buy gifts

Many people mail out Christmas

cards to their friends and families

Christmas is a time for giving. We should

make an extra effort to give a little

something for some people who may not

have what we have for Christmas.

Houses are filled with the smell of

baking and Christmas cookies and cake Children write letters to Santa telling him

History of Some Christmas TraditionsHistory of Some Christmas TraditionsHistory of Some Christmas TraditionsHistory of Some Christmas Traditions

Christians celebrate Christmas to observe the birth of Jesus Christ, which is an event and not a tradition. But many other activities related to celebrating the Christmas season evolved from certain traditions, many of which are from other countries, particularly from peoples in Europe. Read our Story What the Drummer Boy Didn’t

Know ~ Value: The Story of Hanukah see pg 11- 13

Among common items used in Christmas decorations are the holly and the mistletoe. Both are used primarily in wreaths and garlands. The Druids started the tradition of using the mistletoe as decorative items up to two hundred years before Christ. To celebrate the winter season, the Druids would gather the plants and use them to decorate their homes. The Druids believed the mistletoe would bring good luck and ward off evil spirits. They also believed that the mistletoe had a healing quality and could be used for everything from healing wounds to increase fertility.

In Scandinavia, the mistletoe was seen as a plant of peace and harmony and was associated with Frigga, the goddess of love. This association is probably what led to the custom of kissing under the mistletoe. In the Victorian period, the English also would hang mistletoe from ceilings and in doorways during holidays. The habit developed that if someone was standing under the mistletoe, someone else in the room would kiss that person. Such outright behaviour was not generally seen in Victorian society. But great fun is made of it today ☺

The use of the mistletoe in Christmas celebrations was once banned by the church however because of its associations with pagan traditions, and the use of holly was suggested as a substitute.

Poinsettias are another traditional decorative flower used at Christmas. It is native to Mexico and is named after Joel Poinsett, who was the first U.S ambassador to Mexico and who brought the plants to America in 1828. Mexicans believe the plants were a symbol of the Star of Bethlehem and that's one reason they are associated with Christmas. There's also the story that a young boy was going to see the Nativity Play at a church but realized he didn't have a gift for Baby Jesus. The boy gathered some green branches, which others scoffed at. But as he placed them near the manger, a bright red poinsettia flower started to bloom on each branch, which gave rise to their traditional use at Christmas.

Candy canes became a Christmas tradition not because their red and white stripes matched the colours of the season, but for the most unusual reason of discipline. That’s because they were first used as treats that were give to German children to keep them well-behaved for the duration of church sermons. Over time, the legend of candy canes at Christmas came to be associated with some of the strongest symbols and beliefs of Christianity: the Father, Son and Holy Ghost known as the Trinity, the Blood of the Son of God, and Jesus as the embodiment of holiness, purity and without sin and the Son of God as the shepherd of man. The candy cane represents these symbols respectively with its three stripes, its red and white colour and its shape.

Sending greeting cards during Christmas and the holidays is as common today as the custom of giving gifts to friends and family. The tradition of sending Christmas cards started in 1840 in Britain with the start of public postal delivery service of the 'Penny Post.' Then from about 1860, large numbers of Christmas greeting cards started to be produced. The popularity of the cards increased in Britain when they could be sent by the postal service for one half-penny, which was half the price to post a standard letter at the time, if they were in an unsealed envelope. Religious pictures of Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus, the angels, shepherds and Wise Men were traditionally placed on Christmas cards. Some cards today include scenes from the Nativity, but pictures of Santa Claus, winter scenery, Christmas trees, gift packages and others are also depicted on contemporary Christmas greeting cards.

Why do we have tinsel on Christmas Trees? There is a delightful story about why Christmas trees are decorated with tinsel – another tradition with a lovely background. Read the story on page 10.

Advent calendars were popular with immigrant families. They usually are comprised of little windows or houses with flaps to be opened each day of the month of December up to, and including, Christmas day. Behind these flaps was a poem, scripture, fortune, or piece of chocolate candy. Each day this would be a ritual to open the little door for that particular date and receive a reward or verse. Children relished this wonderful tradition, and families still celebrate the twenty-five days leading to Christmas with advent calendars to this very day.

St. Nicholas: The old man with a sack refers to ‘Father Christmas,’ (or in western civilization—Santa Claus, the Americanized version from the Dutch word, Sinterklaas) An elderly man with long white beard, dressed in red, and carrying a bag full of toys was always his description passed down through the ages. But did you know, a REAL person was behind the image that began the tradition of exchanging gifts and giving to the poor at Christmastime? His name was St. Nicholas…This man was a true Christian living in Myra, now known as Turkey. Although he was shy, he wanted to give anonymously to poor and underprivileged children of his time, (the 4th century AD.) He did so with money and gifts sometimes left in children’s’ stockings drying by a crackling fire on the hearth. December 6th is still recognized as St. Nicholas Day in some countries. Traditionally in USA, Europe and elsewhere in the world Santa leaves gifts on Christmas Eve, (December 24th) as he makes his world-wide run with flying reindeer and a sleigh full of toys on that Holy Night.

The Date of Christmas

The idea to celebrate Christmas on December 25 originated in the 4th century. The Catholic Church wanted to eclipse the festivities of a rival pagan religion that threatened Christianity's existence. The Romans celebrated the birthday of their sun god, Mithras during this time of year. Although it was not popular, or even proper, to celebrate people's birthdays in those times, church leaders decided that in order to compete with the pagan celebration they would themselves order a festival in celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. Although the actual season of Jesus' birth is thought to be in the spring, the date of December 25 was chosen as the official birthday celebration as Christ's Mass so that it would compete head on with the rival pagan celebration. Christmas was slow to catch on in America. The early colonists considered it a pagan ritual. The celebration of Christmas was even banned by law in Massachusetts in colonial days.

The Story of Stockings

Legend has it that the tradition of hanging Christmas stockings by the fireplace began with two poor sisters. Both wanted to get married but their father was too poor to pay their wedding dowries. One Christmas Eve, the sisters hung their stockings by the fire to dry. Saint Nicholas intervened and threw gold coins down the chimney and into their stockings. On Christmas Day, the sisters were delighted to discover the money—enough for both dowries.

Victorian children sometimes hung Christmas stockings on their bedposts. Parents then had a recipe for stocking gift giving that still works today: “Something to eat, something to read, something to play with, and something they need.”

Xmas This abbreviation for Christmas is of Greek origin. The word for Christ in Greek is Xristos. During the 16th century, Europeans began using the first initial of Christ's name, "X" in place of the word Christ in Christmas as a shorthand form of the word. Although the early Christians understood that X stood for Christ's name, later Christians who did not understand the Greek language mistook "Xmas" as a sign of disrespect.

The Christmas Spider

A long time ago in Germany a mother was busily cleaning for Christmas. She

swept every corner of the house completely clean, for she wanted everything

bright and shiny in time for Christmas Day. The spiders fled upstairs to the attic to

escape the broom, for they knew she was far too busy to follow them up there.

On Christmas Eve, as soon as the house became quiet, the spiders slowly crept

down for a peek. They scuttled into the living room and oh what a sight they saw!

A beautiful Christmas Tree! In their excitement they scurried up the trunk and out

along each branch. They were filled with happiness as they climbed among the

glittering beauty. Alas, by the time they had finished climbing, the tree was

completely covered with dusty grey spiders' webs.

Midnight came, and Santa Claus came with the gifts for the children. When he saw the tree, he smiled to see how happy the spiders were, but he knew how

heartbroken the mother would be if she saw the tree covered with dusty webs. So

he turned the grey spiders’ webs to silver and gold. The Christmas Tree sparkled

and shimmered and was even more beautiful than before.

That is why we have tinsel on Christmas Trees, and every tree should have a

Christmas spider in its branches.

What the Drummer Boy Didn’t Know Value: The Story of Hanukah

The children of the shepherds waited eagerly not far from Bethlehem to hear the story of their parents visit to see the Christ child. Little Johannes sat on the hill watching the tiny barn in the valley where they say the miracle baby was just born. But instead of his parents, a small boy came out carrying a drum and made his way up the hill. “Oh hello.” The little drummer boy said when he saw the young shepherd boy. “I am Amahl.” “I am Johannes.” The shepherd introduced himself. “Have you been to see the Christ child?” “Yes, I travelled here with the wise men from the east. I could not afford a gift so they let me play my drum for him. I will never forget it.” Amahl told his new friend sitting next to him in the snow. “Yes, I want to see the messiah so much. It is the greatest miracle to come to our people since the Hanukah miracle.” Johannes reflected. “I am not part of your proud Hebrew tradition.” Amahl confessed. “What is this story of Hanukah?” So Amahl began to draw pictures in the snow to tell the story. “A long time ago, over hundred and fifty years ago to be exact, the Hebrew people were being treated very cruelly by bad men who were the government. They did not respect our religion and they destroyed our temple and put filthy things that made our temple unholy on our alters and killed many many people” “Oh that must have been terrible.” Amahl observed. “Stories are told of this horrible treatment around the world. The wise men who brought me talked of them during the long ride to Bethlehem. They said a great champion saved your people.” “Yes, that’s true. His name was Judas Maccabeus and God gave him great victories over our oppressors. He was able to defeat armies of ten thousand with just a few hundred soldiers just like the great deliverers of history did. It was truly a show of how faithful and protective God is of his people.” Johannes continued. “So you celebrate Hanukah because of the miracle of deliverance that God did through Judas Maccabeus?” Wondered Amahl. “Well there’s more to the story.” Amahl continued happy to be able to tell the story of the Hanukah miracle. “Judas Maccabeus drove the oppressors from our land. Our priests and valiant men took the temple back as the battle raged. In the temple there is a flame that is to burn for eternity. It represents that God is present in the temple and He will never leave us or forsake us. When our priests re-entered the temple that day, they found the lamp still burning despite the horrible things the enemy had done to our holy places. It showed us for sure that God never left us and will never leave us, even when we suffer.” Johannes said sound much like his father when the story is told each year in their home.

“This is a wonderful God you have. I wish all the peoples of the world could come to Him.” Amahl said sadly. “The miracle of Hanukah shows that God will save his people no matter what. The priests found there was only enough oil for one day left for the lamp to continue to burn. Because they had to stay in the temple as the battle raged on, there was no way they could go find oil for the lamp and yet that lamp was God’s presence with us. For eight days they waited to get out to get more oil.” Amahl said whispering in awe. “And the lamp? Did God’s presence lift because the oil ran out?” Johannes asked eagerly. “NO!” Amahl said triumphantly, “The lamp burned for eight days on one day's worth of oil. That is the miracle of Hanukah and why we celebrate each year for eight days to commemorate that God would not let his spirit lift from us even though supplies were not available to keep the lamp burning. Our God is not bound by missing oil or anything. He has the power to do miracles for all of his people. And now he has done the greatest miracle, he has sent His only son, Jesus to save all people so we all can be his children.” “As we travelled.” Amahl said, “The wise men spoke of salvation for all people too. Isn’t your God just the God of the Hebrews and didn’t Jesus just come to save the Jews just as Judas Maccabeus saved the Jewish people from outsiders?’ He asked confused. Amahl face lit up because he suddenly understood why Hanukah and Christmas are about the same thing. “The miracle of the Christ child is like Hanukah. Just as God declared in Hanukah that his presence will always be with us, now even more is God coming to be our friend and saviour because God himself has come, not just oil from him or blessing but God himself has come to be with us forever. And the miracle is greater still because as the angel choir sang, his salvation is for all people, the Jews, the wise men from the east, you Amahl, all people can receive the salvation from God.” Both boys got goose bumps from the amazing thing they learned about God. And on that very first Christmas night, Jew and non Jew alike joined hands and accepted the gift of life from Jesus just like you and your family have done and people in your community will continue to do as you tell them the story of the amazing miracle of God’s blessings shown in Hanukah and in the coming of his son, our saviour, Jesus Christ our Lord.
