2018 House MeetingsThis year’s first House meetings saw all students combine with their house team mates, house teachers and House Patrons.

Each meeting included information on how students can earn housepoints, swimming carnival instructions and reminders, relay team organisation, House Captain nomination and voting and our very first Slam chant cheers, in which all students were allowed to yell their chant as loud as they could!

2018 Swimming CarnivalThe 2018 Swimming carnival was the biggest carnival BBHS has had yet! The large number of students who attended, participated and cheered made for a great atmosphere.

A big congratulations to the Teachers relay team consisting of Miss Johnson, Mr Liu, Mr Shiel and Miss Shields who won the TEACHER V STUDENT race, defeating the students by a whopping 50m!

Due to expanding numbers there may be some changes coming to next year’s carnival, so please keep your eyes and ears out for these!Congratulations Swimming Carnival Age Champions12 years Vishal Puvanarajah

Sydney West Baseball TrialsCongratulations to Kalolo Matavesi and Sayshan Shankar who represented the Blacktown Zone Baseball team competing at the Sydney West gala day trials. The Blacktown Zone team played 4 games against; Macquarie Zone, Hills Zone and Werrington Zone and only suffered one loss on the day against Hills Sports High in a 3-1 defeat.

Opens BaseballThe BBHS Opens Baseball team competed in the first round of the Sydney West knockout tournament against Mitchell High on Wednesday 7th March. This was our first game playing together and for most of the boys, the first time they’ve ever played baseball. After many weeks of regular training sessions during recess and lunch breaks, the BBHS

Baseball team ‘stepped up to the plate’ and after going extra innings due to a tied

game……..defeated Mitchell High 13-10. This is the first ever win for a BBHS within the Sydney West knockout in recorded history!

All boys played incredibly well and are to be commended on their sportsmanship, tenacity and BBHS pride!! Some highlights of the game included; Joaquin’s dominant pitching display, Kalolo’s leadership in the field whilst catching after having played an entire gala day of Rugby League, Sayshan’s gold glove at first base, Mahd and Alfred’s adaptability in learning and making adjustments every minute of the game, Seyhman’s remarkable plays at third throughout the game, Dhruv’s exciting ‘at bats’ during the game where he kept getting hit after hit, Matthew’s remarkable diving catch and big double which brought home what would be the winning runs, Lachlan’s resiliency on

the pitching mound after pitching in some big pressure situations and getting out of some jams, Jarome’s forcefulness at bat in which he swung the bat very well and then continued to stand strong in right field and Jordan’s outstanding ‘at bat’ in which he got hit by pitch thus loading the bases up ready to score more runs!

Congratulations boys. Everyone should be very proud of their passion. Good luck for the next round against Hills Sports High.

Sydney West Knockout Volleyball9 students from years 11 & 12 eagerly battled opponents from James Ruse High School in the hope of progressing to the next round of the Knockout Volleyball competition. The skills of the James Ruse boys matched the overzealous determination of our students. As noted by the oppositions coach, “what your boys lack in high skills, they make up for in their determination to strive for success”. The first set was just a warmup for our boys, down 15 to 25. The second set was too close to call, ending at 22 to 25. The third set showed the true colours and raw guts determination with a win at 25 to16. However, the fourth set broke our hearts as we went down 23 to 25. The match was a very closely fought battle, even though we lost 3 – 1, we did ourselves proud. Player of the match was Nathaniel Tumanu of year 11. Well done guys.

Opens Knockout CricketTeam: Ramone Dallas (c), Rahul Jose (vc), Angad Singh (vc), Shahir Ahmed, Bilal Muhammad, Imran Rather, Gurjot Singh, Krish Amin, Neeladri Chakraborty, Benji Joseph, Nihar Padhiyar, Agnik Podder.

On Thursday 8th March, 12 students from Blacktown Boys High School played against Crestwood in the Opens Knockout Cricket Competition. I was especially impressed with how the boys conducted themselves, demonstrating effective teamwork, communication, sportsmanship and resilience. Despite some frustrating and controversial calls, everybody played with the, “Spirit of the Game,” and I would like to say how proud I was of our captain, Ramone Dallas, for his excellent leadership and understanding of how to approach the game. He made some difficult decisions and did a great job leading our boys, and he is to be commended for his role on the day.

Our opening batsmen, Rahul Jose and Nihar Padhiyar, did their job and got through the majority of the opening bowlers’ overs without losing a wicket. However, after a steadying presence from Gurjot Singh and Shahir Ahmed, we went into the hallway point of

the innings, having lost 5 of our wickets. Imran Rather was promoted up the order, and the remaining batsmen all chipped in to see out the 40 overs and finish with a meagre, yet defensible, total of 108. Benji Joseph was our top scorer, and I would also like to recognise Bilal Muhammad, who came in to close out the innings and read the situation well, running aggressively to force some mistakes by Crestwood.

After the lunch break we took up the bowling attack, but were quickly up against it as Crestwood aggressively pursued their target. While our bowlers were able to do some damage, and everyone bowled a suitable line and length, we were only able to stem the flood for a while, before Crestwood managed to finish the game.

Congratulations to all the boys who played. It was a great day regardless of the result and your positive attitudes made it even better.

Open Boys Basketball TeamOn Wednesday, 14th of March the Blacktown Boys’ Opens Basketball team hosted a game against Merrylands High School. The weather had been inclement for the start of the week but thankfully by Wednesday afternoon the skies were clear and the game could go ahead. Merrylands initially won the tip off and for most of the first half the scores were close, with each team going basket for basket. By half time we were in the lead, but only just, clinging on to a 2 point advantage.

The second half started with a flurry of quick points from Merrylands. We were able to stay close in score but they had great outside shots and were in front once more. Late in the second half, both teams were tiring and fouls started to cost both teams points. With only 20 seconds to go, we were down by 1, Yuvanraj Mahenderan brought the ball up from back court and was able to hit a long range 3 pointer to put us up by 2 points. The clock slowly wound down and Blacktown was able to secure the win. Merrylands were gracious in defeat and were very evenly matched with our team. Our next round game is an away game against Parramatta, coming off of a win against Hills Sport High, to be played in the next few weeks.

Under 16’s Futsal NSW School’s ChampionshipOn Wednesday 16th March, the Under 16’s Futsal team travelled to Cambridge Park to compete at the Futsal NSW School’s Championship. With the boys eager and energised for their upcoming games they were placed in an unfriendly group amongst current state champions. The boys fought hard in all their games and showed great sportsmanship; unfortunately we did not make it out of the group stage to progress in the competition. The boys can take full confidence out of this competition knowing that they matched it with some of the best futsal teams in the state.

Well Done!

Open Boys Soccer Round 1BBHS VS Girraween High School

On Friday 18th March, The Open Boys Soccer Team hosted Girraween High School in Round 1 of the Sydney West Knockout Tournament. The game was evenly contested in the first half which saw both teams scoreless at half time. After a half time talk and some adjustments in tactics BBHS gained control of the game creating numerous chances, putting Girraween’s defence under constant pressure. Finally BBHS made the breakthrough thanks to a goal from Ayaz Nasiry. Francis Asare made the score 2-0 easily slotting the ball in the back of the net after some great lead up play from Ayaz Nasiry and Heritier Penekatamba. Girraween grabbed a late consolation goal, but the boys hung on for a hard fought victory and progressed to Round 2 of the competition. Special mentions go to Muhammed Karabork, Alfred Sankoh-Lamin and Abdul Parwani for their rock solid performance in defence.

Great effort boys!!

Open Boys Soccer Round 2BBHS VS Northmead High School

On Thursday 6th April, The Open Boys Soccer Team hosted Northmead High School in Round 2 of the Sydney West Knockout Tournament. Coming up against last year’s winners, the boys knew they would be in for a tough game. The first half did not go our way with the boys conceding a soft penalty early in the first half. With our backs against the wall the boys managed to finish on top in the first half, however failed to grab an equaliser. Refreshed after half time, the boys came out with more passion and determination to fight their way back into the game. Our boys were creating several chances but the ball not going in the back of the net as Northmead’s defence were on their game. With a few minutes to go Northmead put the game to bed as they grabbed a second, after some nice passing, and easily getting in behind our defence. The boys should feel very proud of the way that they played and in the manner that the game was played.

Well done boys!!

Open’s Boys Touch Football Game On Wednesday the 5th April, The Open’s Boys Touch Football Team competed in their first Sydney West Knockout game. With a BBHS team consisting of Year 9 and 10 players, they took on the challenge of battling it out against the Year 11 and 12 Merrylands High School Touch Football Team. Their age and size did not stop our BBHS boys from making marks on the score board. Going down without a fight, the score did not reflect the hard work and effort that the BBHS boys put in right up until that final whistle was blown. It was so great to see the boys continuously encouraging each other and pushing each other to their limits. With a little more hard work and training early in the New Year, I know that our boys will rise up with the skill and determination to make it through the tournament.

Great Effort Boys!!

University Shield Open Boys Rugby League Gala DayOn Wednesday, 11th April our Open’s Rugby League team competed in the University Shield Rugby League Gala Day. Our students played three games on the day winning two and losing one. There were a total of 11 schools competing on the day and we finished 5th in the overall rankings which qualified the team for the Sydney West Regional Gala Day to be held during Term 2. This is an achievement that each of the boys should be very proud of. While every other team had a full bench of reserves, we were required to play with a total of 12 players due to some students failing to attend. Anybody that follows rugby league would know that this is normally an

insurmountable task. NOT FOR OUR BOYS!!! The team showed tremendous belief and resilience to be extremely competitive in each of their matches. Not only did they surprise their coach but I think they surprised their opposition who assumed they would be cannon fodder due to our lack of numbers. The boys executed a simple but effective game plan in each of our matches and I can honestly say I have never been prouder of a team I have coached. The goal for the next event is to add some players to the squad so that we can share the workload and continue the success of the team. The results of our matches were as follows:

Defeated Doonside High School 12-0

Lost to Loyola College 6-10

Defeated Glenmore Park High School 12-4

The team members included the following students:

Nathaniel Tumanu, Jarome Toma, Dylan Brown, Eisa Darfour, Kalolo Matavesi, Zephaniah Onesemo, Troy Matoto, Mustafa Musa, Baljosh Gill

Buckley Shield Rugby League ReportOur Under 14’s Rugby League team participated in the Buckley Shield Gala Day at Whalan Reserve on Wednesday, 9th May. There were 20 schools in attendance which were divided into four pools. The top two teams from each pool would qualify for the Regional Gala Day to be held at the same venue on Tuesday, 22nd May. Our pool matches and results were as follows:

Defeated Cambridge Park 16-0

Lost to Merrylands 4-20

Lost to Nepean 12-10

Drew to Windsor 12-12

These results enabled us to finish second in our pool behind Merrylands which means the team has qualified for the Regional Gala Day. Considering half our team are not playing rugby league at club level, I thought their efforts were outstanding and well deserved.

At the start of the day I informed the boys the main goal was not to win but to play the game in the right spirit and to work as a team. I must say I was very proud of the way they conducted themselves and the sportsmanship on display was outstanding. Even to the point where some of our boys applauded the other team after scoring a try which you won’t see too often in the NRL or any level for that matter.

The team members included: Sione Kata, Jerome Iakopo, Rishal Chand, Tevita Sultana, Avilash Tharmanesan, Robert David, Samuel David, Sasha Bloomfield, Vishal Puvanarajah, Sarujan Pathmanathan, Nevalita Toloke, Justice Pinono, Jonathan Loulanting, Josia Tumanu, Malik Youssef, Luqman Youssef, Foueti Aho, Brock Waldron, Mitchell Jones & Jacob Tyrell.

WELL DONE BOYS!!!!
