1.1 Integers, PEMDAS, Evaluating Expressions

RULES for MULTIPLYING/DIVIDING IntegersIf SAME signs 3(4) = 12

If DIFF signsanswer 3(-4) = -12 -3(4) = -12

12/4 = 3

-3(-4) = 12-12-4 = 3

POSITVE answerNEGATIVEIf SAME signs 3 + 4 = 7-3 + -4 = -7

answer takes the SAME signIf DIFF signs-9 + 4 = -59 + -4 = +5

answer takes the sign of the HEAVIER numberRULES for COMBINING Integers

Fill in your PEMDAS FOLDABLE as we go . . .

I think another interesting thing to talk about in class is the difference between conventions and mathematical laws. For example, order of operations is a convention - it's up to us to decide how this will work. Distribution is a law (property) - it's not up to us to decide how this works, it's already been determined.

1.3 Distribution and Combining Like Terms

Distributive PropertyMultiply/Divide everything in the group by the number outside. = 14 = -6m + 15= 2m + 1Examples:2(4 + 3) = 2 * 4 + 2 * 3= 8 + 6 -3(2m 5) = -3 * 2m - -3 * 54m + 2 2 = 4m + 2 2 2 Combining Like Terms1. Draw lines in front of each + or to separate all the terms.2. Color all like terms the same color.3. Put each group of like terms together.

4. Simplify each group into one single term.Example:-5a 2 + 3a 4b + a 12 + 6b + 1 a -5a 2+ 3a 4b+ a 12+ 6b+ 1- a -5a +3a + a - a -4b + 6b-2 -12 +1-2a + 2b - 13
