We will thus be a homework free school, with only reading and studying for assessments as home-based tasks, allowing our children to fully explore study techniques that suit them instead of consistently cramming.

END OF TERM NEWS

This term has been a long one, and we’ve had many exciting events taking place, keeping our school and community busy.

We’ve hosted families on campus for our Grade 7 Welcome Braai, the Family So you Think you Can Add Maths Challenge and our

first 3-way Parents Evening.

The Senior School Play, Everything is Awesome, is growing steadily under the guidance of Mr Van der Merwe and Mrs Pieterse. I

look forward to seeing the children up on stage as the excitement is definitely tangible.

The children continue to do their part in giving back and various grades have completed outreach activities, with the latest being

the Grade 3 trip to HAWS and the Cupcake For Cancer initiative, held this year on Mr Sloane’s birthday. Also getting out and

about are our Grade 4 to 7s, who attended their annual camps and came back tired and dirty. This morning at 6AM our soccer

teams set off on tour and in May the netball girls will make the trip to Penryn.

This term saw the first ever Zulu production held at school, which was enjoyed by all and only serves to enhance our current isi-

Zulu offering, under Miss Mbuyisa’s careful tuition.

This is an important year for our Grade 7 children, who serve the school as leaders and embark on fundraising for their end of

year event. The Kingfisher leaders have done a super job of leading the school and we have been particularly impressed by their

creativity. My thanks to the Fund Raising mothers who are providing opportunities for the children to be involved in this process.

Getting older comes with challenges, and our senior children have listened to talks on both social media awareness and the

threat of child trafficking. With high school around the corner, the Grade 7s have been experiencing life on the other side of the

fence as they attend classes in the college and team building events.

Fitted into all of that action are the weekly cycle tests, projects, practises and matches. It’s no wonder we are ready for a holiday!

We have much to look forward to this year as we have a number of initiatives that are gaining momentum. On the 1st of June a 7

day timetable will be introduced, allowing us to expand our offering to the children. This includes both Maths and English

extension and support classes during the school day.

The extended timetable also allows us to include a tutor period at the end of the day, where children can complete their home-

work. We will thus be a homework free school, with only reading and studying for assessments as home-based tasks, allowing

our children to fully explore study techniques that suit them instead of consistently cramming.

This week I was given the go-ahead by Advtech to announce to you today that we will be rolling out a robotics programme in the

Prep School from Grade 1 to 7. While we are still in the beginning stages, we are confident that we have found the perfect

service provider in Stem Dynamics and Mr Seewald will be heading up this very exciting department. At a recent Microsoft train-

ing event, Chris was awarded with a Microsoft cape, which we think is only fitting we hand out today, as he is instrumental in

taking technology in the prep school to a new level and has been driving our move towards robotics.

It was with great excitement that our Maths desks arrived at

school this week. The 8 desks fit into a circular shape, allowing for

more flexible seating plans in the classroom. Once set in a semi-

circle, it also allows the teacher to work effectively with smaller

groups.

This week also saw us hosting our first 3-way

parent interview, involving the child, parents and

teacher. This allowed our children to be part of the

parent-teacher interview, taking cognisance of

their own responsibilities and allowing them to set

achievable goals. Now to work towards these

goals in Term 2!

As Caroline Correia takes on her new role as Senior Head of Academics, her responsibilities as Head of Administra-

tion will be taken over by Teri Franz. Teri has all the skills necessary to see that our school functions effectively and

will no doubt add her own flair to this new portfolio.

A big congratulations to all of our achievers this term, be it 75% and above, in the Top 5, or reaching a goal set

earlier in the year. After a long term of hard work, the holiday is certainly well-deserved.

We wish all of our families a peaceful Easter Holiday, welcoming you back refreshed

and ready to tackle new challenges on the 9th May.

I would like to express my heartfelt

appreciation to the parents who have

generously supported the library by

donating books.

The books are wonderful additions to our

library and will be valued and enjoyed

by the children.

Grade 3

On Tuesday this week, we visited Haws. The bus trip there was very exciting and the teachers heard lots of happy chatter all the way. Arriving at Haws and seeing all the cold and wet cages for the animals was very sad. The children battled to carry out all the bags of dog and cat food. We were so overwhelmed by all our generous parents and children for the amazing donations. Thank you so much. The children were given treats to feed to the cats and dogs and happily bounced off to share the love! We were so impressed with our children as they all played and exercised the cats and dogs. Every child was seen stroking and loving the animals. Haws really needs our help and they are doing an incredible job.

Have a wonderful and blessed Easter and enjoy the holidays.

HEAD OF ACADEMICS CAROLINE CORREIA

PREP PULSE 12 April 2019

At the beginning of April, we celebrated books and a love of reading with our annual Book Week. Hooked on Books and The Travelling Bookshop visited the school. During the week, the children were involved in activities related to books. The Grade 5, 6 and 7 children had to design and create 3D book reviews of a book that they have read this term. They then presented them to the class to promote their book and instil a desire in their peers to read the book. A huge amount of effort went into the making of their 3D book reviews and I was amazed at the originality and creativity demonstrated by the Senior Prep children. Well done!
