Assessment scores fromthe Common Core springtesting were released to thepublic Thursday.

Webster Parish superin-tendent of schools Dr. DanRawls says he’s just receivedthe results and is justscratching the surface ofwhat they all mean.

“I’ve just scratched thesurface,” he said. “It’s goingto take a while to look at all ofthis.”

Thursday’s release of dis-trict and school scores fol-lows last week’s release ofstatewide results showingthat only 22 of 40 percent ofLouisiana public school stu-dents show what state offi-cials consider “mastery” oftheir subject matter, depend-ing on grade and subjectmatter.

The state considers “mas-tery” the level at which stu-dents are ready for post-sec-ondary education, state edu-cation superintendent JohnWhite said in a news confer-ence.

And while schools anddistricts can currently earnan “A” grade in the stateaccountabili-ty systemwhen theaverage scoreis the lower“basic” level, that bar willslowly beraised in thecoming years.Schools anddistricts will have to averageout at the “mastery” level todo that well in 2025.

The 2014-15 school year isthe first of two years of base-line scores before the scoreswill “count,” but White saysthis year’s scores, using the

new test, are in line with howstudents performed overalllast year.

“If they give the same testnext year, they can comparethis year’s scores with nextyear’s scores,” Rawls said.“Then they will count. But ifyou change the test again, then they won’t. That’s whatpeople are complainingabout all the time. He’s say-ing, ‘We’re trying to stan-dardize the test so you cancompare them.’”

White says the resultsaren’t surprising.

"You're not going to see uscompare this year's resultswith last year's resultsbecause you have differentkids taking the tests and youhave different tests," Whitesaid. "However, the resultsare generally comparable topast assessments."

The tests administered inthe spring to about 320,000students in grades 3-8 were

developed by the Partnershipfor Assessment of Readinessfor Colleges and Careers, orPARCC, to align with Com-mon Core standards adoptedby about 40 states.

The PARCC tests arebeing used in about 11 statesand the District of Columbia.

White says some 98.5 per-cent of eligible students tookthe PARCC test in the spring. Some areas had higher ratesof non-participation thanothers, he said.

The Louisiana Depart-ment of Education will joinBESE in developing a policyto address assessment ofschool quality where non-participation is a factor with-out giving unfair advantageto schools with higher num-bers of non-participants.

The Associated Press con-tributed to this report.

Holley’s wife, Pam, says T.C.Bloxom would be happy withthe turnout.

“It raised money for thechurch, and I think he’d behappy with that,” she said.

and his wife, Lyda, are alsomembers of FUMC.

MANSFIELD - Infront of a national tele-vision audience and alarge homecomingcrowd, the visitingNorth Webster Knightssent a message that dis-trict 1-3A is their’s forthe taking with a domi-nant 48-6 road triumph.

Coming intoThursday’s game, theKnights were concernedwith the Wolverines sizeup front and JaylinWilson’s playmakingability at quarterback.

Neither proved to bevery effective againstthe three-headed back-field monster of DevinWhite, Jalen Smith andT.J. Hawthorne, or aballhawking Knightsdefense led by Whiteand fellow linebackers,Blake Atchley andKe’Untra Gipson.

“It was a big win,”North Webster headcoach John Ware said.“We were ready to playtonight and jumped onthem from the start. Ourkids played agressiveand excited tonight.”

North Websterreceived to start thegame and was forced topunt after gaining onefirst down on their open-ing possession. TheKnight’s defense

responded with RicoGonzalez coming upwith a fumble recoveryon a botched snap, andon the next play Whitewent 20 yards untouchedinto the endzone tomake it 7-0 Knights.

On Mansfield’s next

offensive possession,Blake Atchley steppedin front of a JaylinWilson pass and dartedaround the lef t s ideinto the endzone for apick six that put NorthWebster on top, 14-0.

North Webster kept

attacking, this timethrough the air, asAtchley capped anotherturnover-aided posses-sion with a three-yardtouchdown reception tomake it 21-0.

The Wolverines, per-haps sensing the game

slipping away, attempt-ed a reverse on the ensu-ing kickoff, but thehandoff was bobbledand the ball recoveredby the Knights.

With another shortfield it didn’t take Whitelong to find the endzone

for his second touch-down of the night, thisone a two-yard score.

Quarterback CameronHuff tossed his secondtouchdown of the nightin the second quarter tosophomore T.J.Hawthorne to make thescore 34-0, and after thefifth turnover of the halfby Mansfield, Whiteended all homecominghope with his third shorttouchdown of the nightto make it 41-0.

“We’re finally gellinga little bit on offense,”Ware said. “You have topick your poison andhopefully that will con-tinue over the next fewweeks.”

The second half wasplayed with a runningclock, and NorthWebster exitedMansfield with a victorythat provides plenty ofconfidence heading intonext week’s matchupwith district 1-3A’s No.2 team, Green Oaks.

“This is the time ofthe year to do it,” Waresaid. “We’ve peaked thistime of year in the pastand I hope we’re gettingready to do that again.Tonight was certainly agreat start.”

Wide receiver WesleyFranklin, the Knightsleading receiver, wentdown with an apparentankle injury in the firstquarter. Ware certainlyhopes his 6’4” playmak-er will be okay goingforward, but isn’t sureof the severity as ofnow.

“I’m not real surewhat the deal is rightnow,” Ware said. “We’rehopeful it’s just an anklesprain.”

BATON ROUGE —LSU quarterbackBrandon Harris makes itclear that he reads andwatches the news, andknows just about every-thing being said abouthim.

He doesn't see theneed to be one of thoseplayers who contends —honestly or not — thathe pays no attention tothe media.

"Apparently, peoplethink I can't throw,"Harris said after passingfor 202 yards and twotouchdowns against in avictory over Florida lastweekend that boostedthe unbeaten Tigers (6-

0) to fifth in the nation-al rankings.

"It 's nothing butmotivation to me,"Harris continued, adding that he some-times makes a pointbefore games of remind-ing his receivers whatcertain analysts havesaid about LSU's lack ofa passing game. "I playwith a chip on myshoulder every singleweek.

"This team knowshow talented we arepassing the ball andeverybody knows what Ican do throwing thefootball," Harris contin-ued. "It really hurtswhen people say that allwe have is a runninggame and this and that. That's so much motiva-tion. For those that keepsaying that, keep doubt-ing me. I love it."

Harris, a sophomorefrom Bossier City,Louisiana, won thestarting job this summer

and has, in the words ofcoach Les Miles, done"exactly" what LSUneeded. For the mostpart, that has been man-aging an offense featur-ing running backLeonard Fournette andp r o d u c -i n g3 2 5 . 5y a r d sr u s h i n gper gameas ateam.

I nthree ofL S U ' sfirst fourg a m e s ,H a r r i spassed for fewer than100 yards. A gameagainst heavy underdogEastern Michigan mayhave been the low point,when Harris was victim-ized by a couple dropsin or near the end zoneand finished 4 of 15 for80 yards.

But in each of LSU's

recent victories overSouth Carolina andFlorida, Harris eclipsedthe 200-yard mark toraise his season averageto 135.3 yards passingper game. This week,LSU hosts WesternKentucky, whose quar-terback, Brad Doughty, averages 378.7 yardspassing.

"You don't play foot-ball at risk of injurywithout playing with alittle passion and caringabout how you'rereceived," Miles saidthis week when askedabout Harris' inclinationto engage his criticspublicly. "But he needsnot to worry about thatat all.

"The opinions thatmatter will all comefrom ... that big build-ing that we practice in,"Miles continued."Others don't know. ...So he needs to just dothe things that he's beendoing and not try to

exceed the play call."Harris appeared to

exceed one play callshortly before the firsthalf last week, but itworked out.

After being flushedfrom the pocket, Harrisslipped a tackle whilerolling right andlaunched a deep passthat Malachi Duprehauled in for a 50-yardtouchdown.

"He had a few guyshe could have thrownthe ball to," Dupre saidafter reviewing film ofthe third-down play."He was smart and real-ized that at the worst-case scenario, it couldhave been an intercep-tion, but it would havejust been like a punt thatthey would have had todo anyway. SoBrandon's just becom-ing a great quarterbackand a leader."

Dupre said there havebeen times when hewanted to tell Harris to

ignore the critics, butthe receiver said he hasalso come to appreciateHarris' ability to handlecriticism and make itwork for him.

"He likes to step upto challenges and I feellike he keeps hearing alot of noise outside ofthe team — people talk-ing about how he can'tthrow the ball — justbecause we weren'tthrowing the ball asmuch the first couplegames of the season andwe didn't have thatmuch success throwingthe ball in the first cou-ple games," Dupre said."I think that botheredhim a lot and it justdrives him more andmore.

"I see how hard heworks. He's only gettingbetter," Dupre added."He made some reallybeautiful throws thisweekend and I think hejust wants to keep prov-ing people wrong."
