Coach: K.C. John-son (14th year) 2013: 9-4 (lost in state semifinals) Returning Starters: 5 offense, 8 defense

By The Chronicle

The Pirates are, from a percent-age standpoint, a young team. That's not to say they're with-out plenty of experience. Adna has a whopping 54 play-ers out for football this season, with just six seniors on the roster. "We're pups," Adna coach K.C. Johnson said. "Athletic pups, but we've got to grow up and use our depth. We're going to have to play real well. Some of these teams are

just more physical than we are." The team's experience, though, comes in a few good places. Quarterback and linebacker David Young returns to lead a team

Central 2B League Coach: Aaron Po-quette (fourth) 2013: 13-1 (lost in state finals) Returning Starters: 3 offense, 3 defense

By The Chronicle

The 2014 incarnation of the Morton-White Pass Timberwolves isn’t rolling into the season with the same expectations the team has had the last three years.

After three straight trips to the State 2B championship game — and a 22-1 record in Central 2B League play in that span — MWP graduated the majority of its first-team offense and defense, with just three starters returning on each side of the ball this fall. “Personally, I don’t think you replace those guys. Mossyrock’s success this season will be tied directly into its offen-sive line — and luckily for them, the complete unit is back from last year. “Our offensive line will definitely be improved from last year and they’ll still be young guys up front,” Mossyrock coach Curt Spahn said. “If our skill guys aren’t the best in

the league, they’ll still be close up there.” The Vikings will look to bounce back from a 2-7 season last year and a 1-7 campaign in the Central 2B League — with its lone league win coming in a 34-26 nail-biter over Winlock. Only graduating three seniors — though they played large roles — means there’s plenty of experience on the squad. Junior Hunter Fuchs will step in

as quarterback and safety. Fuchs played quarterback through middle school and got a start in last sea-son. Senior Jarrad Majors will carry a large load at running back and nose guard, while fellow senior Logan Gootgeld will play tight end and middle linebacker. “Majors is a strong kid and he’ll definitely run hard,” Spahn said. Bryant Bowman will also be an

outside threat at wide receiver and cornerback. Sophomores Bo Miles and James Cheney will also add quickness as slot receivers. In all, the Vikings have 30 players out for football this season. “We’ve already been notic-ing there’s more confidence in the air with this team from last year,” Spahn said. “And that’s a good

The Tigers aren't taking any preseason hype seriously. They never do. Napavine returns eight players on each side of the ball this year from a squad that lost a tight State 2B quarterfinal contest to Raymond last season, and the expectations — and, yes, the hype — are high, with Napavine voted the No. 2 team in the state in the Associated Press' preseason poll. "The rankings are nice to have, but our goal is the same goal it's been since I got here in 2007, and that's to find a way to get into the state playoffs," Napavine coach Josh Fay said. "Then we'll play it one game at a time, and maybe we'll get lucky, and maybe we won't." The Tigers, again, will roll out two quarterbacks. Big sophomore Wyatt Stanley, who took over a starting role late in the season as

a freshman, will essentially be the passer, while Brady Woodrum will take snaps and occasionally run out of the wildcat formation. "Wyatt looks good. He's doing a lot of good things for us right now. His footwork needs to improve, but he looks good," Fay said. "The thing that's going to help him, is I really like what we've got at receiver. We've got some kids that are tough matchups, and I think our offensive line is up to the challenge."

Chance Sherwood and Tucker Dekoker return to the offensive line, and Fay pointed out that six more players are fighting for the remain-ing three spots.

When you have a teammate like Travis McMillion, who's now suiting up for Pacific Lutheran University, it can be hard to make your own mark. But Onalaska's Kiefer Kastl left plenty of marks on opposing defenders during the running back's 1,313-yard campaign in 2013. "Kiefer is a great kid and we're looking forward to his senior sea-son," Onalaska coach Mazen Saade said. "He's worked very hard and he's super excited for this offensive line. They've put in a lot of time in the offseason." And the Loggers' key to suc-cess — something they expe-rienced last year when they advanced to crossover round of the postseason — will rest on that offensive line. "If they can move guys up front we'll be good," Saade said. "That's football. It's blocking and tackling and it's going to be a long season if we can't do that but we have a lot of faith in our line." That line includes first team all-league offensive and defensive lineman Chase Wilcutt along with returners Jared Trulson, Roberto Patraca, Zack Caldwell and Zack Huffman. After a great performance at Camp Rilea, Saade is looking for those players to open the same holes that last year got Kastl 13 touchdowns and 7.2 yards a carry

last season. Ernie Roque has also looked good for Onalaska in the defensive secondary and as a receiver, and juniors Stone Whitney and Jacob Modica will bolster the running back corps. Both will also play linebacker for the Loggers.

Onalaska also added softball coach Ken Ulery to their coaching staff, which also includes Wayne Nelson and Weylin Womack. "The challenge is to see if we can do the little things," Saade said, "if we can do the little things and overcome the little things along

the road." The road, which gets tougher in the Central 2B League with the addition of Toledo and combination of Pe Ell-Willapa Valley, will begin for the Loggers Friday against state semifinalist Adna.

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley Titans

Central 2B League Coach: Josh Fluke (second) 2013: Pe Ell 4-6, Willapa Valley 4-5 Returning starters: Pe Ell 6 offense, 6 de-fense; Willapa Valley 6 offense, 6 defense

By The Chronicle

A new mascot and a new team name are just the beginning. Pe Ell and Willapa Valley high schools opted over the summer to combine programs for football, baseball and softball, deciding on a new mascot — the Titans — and giving coach Josh Fluke plenty of new faces and bodies to work with this season. Fluke, a Willapa Valley gradu-ate, took over as Pe Ell’s head football coach last year, and had no complaints about the decision to combine the squads. He put on a mini-camp for two weeks in July,

just giving the players a chance to run through the offense, and said the support through the summer has been great. “The community, they know each other, and otherwise there’s no bickering or anything,” Fluke said. “They’re trying hard. They’re doing hit drills, and they’re going for it.”

There’s plenty of reasons for Toledo football fans to be excited this fall. You could start with the state’s reclassification, which dropped Toledo down from the 1A clas-sification to the 2Bs. With that, of course, came a shift from play-ing in the SWW 1A League Trico Division to the Central 2B League. It’s not necessarily a drop-off, from a competitive standpoint; the C2BL, after all, has put five teams in the state championship game in the last six years. As far as drumming up inter-est locally, though, the move couldn’t be better. Gone will be long road trips to the Columbia River Gorge to play White Salmon and Stevenson; instead, Toledo will match up with historic rivals Winlock, Napavine, Onalaska and Adna, among others. “There won’t be eight people from Seton Catholic, or three people from Forks watching,” third-year Indians coach Jeremy Thibault joked. “I can’t wait.” And the Indian faithful are expected to have a decent prod-uct to watch on the field, as well. Toledo went 3-6 last year in the Trico but returns a boatload of starters for its debut in the C2BL. Toledo’s offense will be based on the Wing-T, but Thibault pointed out it’s merely the base formation; the team’s speed will give it plenty of opportunities to move around the outside. Quarterbacking duties will likely fall to Dalton Yoder, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound sophomore who played quarterback, tight end and receiver last season. Grant McEwen, turn-ing out for his senior year at 5-11 and 180, has also been taking reps under center as well as at most of the skill positions. “They’re both great, and both great kids to work with, too,”

Thibault said. “Practice has been pretty simple.” Nine players return to the team on offense, though Thibault pointed out that a few of those may be beat out by younger players before the first game. Taylor Hicks, an All-League run-ning back last season with around 900 rushing yards on 115 carries, moves to fullback this year, with Dakota Robbins and Mason Gaul running on the opposite wings. Konner Crawford, Logan Holbrook, Gabe Fuentes and Connor Vermilyea will all shift around the receiver and tight end positions, and Danny Echtle and Austin Eaton return on the offensive line.

Defensively, Thibault said around 16 players are still vying for starting spots. Eaton and Holbrook have looked solid at middle line-backer, with Holbrook, in particular, bulking up to around 155 pounds since wrestling at 126 last winter.

In a Central 2B League that seems to get tougher every year, Winlock hopes it can finally break the funk that’s been around the program. With Mike Voie entering the third year of his second tenure for the Cardinals, he’s got a differ-ent feeling heading into this season. “There’s a definitely positive atmosphere around practice and these kids work hard,” Voie said. “It’s a different feel this year, in the past year I think we got intimidated but these guys aren’t going to back down.” Winlock returns five starters on both offense and defense and adds a state championship-winning piece from Wyoming to hopefully bolster their ranks. Voie says he expects more speed and a defense that is tougher than the unit that gave up 441 points in 10 games last year. Back under center is sophomore quarterback Scott Weinert, who spent the offseason working on his craft at quarterback camps. Winlock plans to throw more this season, and Weinert is a key piece in that philosophy. Junior Shaun Berry, sophomore Derek Chilcoate and Evan Mitchell will split carries as running backs this season after the departure of Chance Fisher to graduation. Berry volunteered to play line last season after injuries struck the Cardinals and Mitchell will also play at the end position. “I’m not letting Shaun play back in the line,” Voie said. “He’s a real tough kid and runner.” The Cardinals also added Wyoming transfer Corey Sturza — who, while having been in the Winlock school district before, won a state championship in the Cowboy State last season. Sturza will line up at fullback and will be a strong leader for the Cardinals. Sophomore Wyatt Dean will

reinforce a line that was banged up last year, and Nolan Patching will add depth at the quarterback posi-tion behind Weinert. “Nolan is pretty sharp and both him and Zach are close in terms of playing,” Voie said. “Nolan will also play linebacker for us on defense after starting some games for us last year.” Voie also added Eric Lowe from Centralia to his coaching staff along with Winlock stalwarts Craig Mitchell and Scott Weinert. Voie said the biggest challenge for this team is simply a tough Central 2B League slate that now includes a combined Pe Ell-Willapa Valley squad and Toledo, down from 1A. But while the league might be getting tougher, the Cardinals are too.

Everything in Chehalis is going to a look a little different this sea-son. The Bearcats return a total of three starters from last year’s team, which rode a pass-happy offense to the first round of the State 2A playoffs. None of those starters happens to be an offensive skill player. “I have no idea what the

offense is going to look like right now,” Bearcat coach Bob Wollan said. “It’s going to change dramati-cally from last year. We won’t look

anything like last year. We’ve got a whole bunch of guys that haven’t played varsity football very much, and I think we’ve got to find out

what style and what things are going to work.” Elijah Johnson, a speedy junior, will take over the starting quarter-back roll. “He’s a real athletic kid. He’s waited his turn, and whatever we

Centralia TigersEvergreen 2A Conference

Coach: Matt Whitmire (second) 2013: 2-7 Returning starters: 4 offense, 4 defense

By The Chronicle

Perhaps the biggest issue Matt Whitmire saw with his Tiger foot-ball team last year was a lack of weight-room dedication. When Whitmire took over the program a year ago, about 12 players were regulars in the weight room. He's now happy to report that closer to 70 are regularly pumping iron, which should help provide a cure to the injuries that plagued Centralia in last year's 2-7 campaign. "We're still one year away from

where we need to be," Whitmire said, "but if we manage to stay healthy, I like our chances this year." Javon Brager returns at fullback and should see the lion's share of carries in the Tigers' option offense. "When he is consistent, he is capable of playing among the elite players here," Whitmire said. "It's just a matter of Javon coming along and understanding he's going to have to go four quarters to help carry the team." He's joined in the backfield by Gavin Kerner and Jacob Monohon,

who will both line up at slotback. "They have a familiarity with the system they didn't have last year, and they've both been very commit-ted to the weight room, which shows in probably an additional 10 pounds

of bulk for both of them," Whitmire said. "There's an uptick in speed, and we're very excited about the big-play potential with those two." Sophomore Joey Aliff and junior Joe Finch will split time at quarter-back.

Rochester finally found their coach, as Eric Snelson galvanized the Warriors to a 6-4 record and the postseason after years of rough seas. Snelson comes back for a his second campaign without run-ning back Tyler Yarber and Tyler Gedney but plans to reload instead of rebuild as Rochester moves up to the 2A classification. "That change means differ-ent sizes of squads that we'll face but the kids have been in the weight room and have gotten a lot stronger in preparation for the 2A ranks," Snelson said. "During this summer 35-40 kids were doing con-ditioning and training in the sum-mer and I believe they're getting as prepared as they possibly can." Senior Juan Jimenez will take the snaps for the Warriors this season as a mobile and throwing threat after spreading 2013 as a wide receiver. Fellow senior Wyatt Singer will move from his all-league spot at tight end to running back where he should be able to lower his massive shoulder for a few extra yards. "The chemistry the kids have had and the character they have in the weight room has been great," Snelson said. "I enjoy watching this team and seeing them interact and that's going to pay dividends as the season moves on."

Jordan McLemore and Bobby Brien will be the senior wide receiv-er threats for the Warriors this sea-son while Jiminez will get plenty of protection from tackles Tyler Barnes and Andrew Caldwell as well as center Chase Dover. Rochester will play in the new Grays Harbor 1A/2A League which is the remnants of the Evergreen

1A Division plus Aberdeen, newly 2A Rochester and Eatonville. The Warriors will have to win two of their three nonleague 2A games and win 75 percent of their league games in order to be eligible for the postseason. They'll get a chance to pick up one of those valued 2A victories in their season opener at Centralia.

With the kids familiar with each other since the Rochester school district borders Centralia, Tiger Stadium will be an extra-special welcome to the 2As. "The hay is kind of in the barn and we're set both offensively and defensively," Snelson said. "Our team just wants to get out on the field."

Tenino BeaversGrays Harbor 1A/2A League

Coach: Randy Swil-ley (first) 2013: 6-5 Returning Starters: 4 offense, 4 defense

By The Chronicle

For the first time in four years, Tenino will be without coach Jeff Zenisek and SWW 1A Evergreen MVP Zack Chamberlain. But don't worry. The Beavers have reinforcements. Zenisek moved on to coach at 4A Thomas Jefferson while Chamberlain graduated, so Tenino brought in North Thurston defensive coordinator Randy Swilley. Swilley’s experience includes a five-year head coaching stint with Hoquiam and a four-year stint with Yelm "It's been great," Swilley said. "The kids are wonderful and the town is extremely supportive. Everything done there is for the kids. The kids have also been really open-minded and I feel like I have my best coaching staff." He brings his single-wing offense to the Beavers, who have plenty of talent to carry out the Xs and Os. "There's very few people that run that in the state," Swilley said. "It's one of the oldest offenses there is. It's a different-looking offense and people are flying around everywhere." Speaking of flying around, all-league quarterback Calvin Guzman is back, along with running backs Thomas Pier and Zeb Chamberlain. All-leaguer Jonathon JonesNewman is back on the offensive and defen-sive lines and junior Kaleb Strawn

will see his first varsity action in the backfield. After winning their first league title since 1986 last year, Tenino will enter the 2014 campaign with

seven returning starters on both sides of the ball. "That's a huge strength," Swilley said. "It's a very athletic team and for a single-A squad, there is quite

a bit of size on the offensive line. I'm very pleased with their abilities."Tenino has a talented varsity, but lack of numbers out could lead to depth problems. With the Beavers heading into the combined 1A/2A Grays Harbor League, depth might be important.

"It's a great problem to have, at camp trying to lock it to five guys," Fay said. "It's a great problem to have." Stanley's main receivers will be Woodrum and fellow senior Cole Doughty, a big target at 6-foot-2. Napavine's strength, however, has typically been running the ball behind a big line. The line may not be packed with 235-pounders, but the stable of running backs is just as well-stocked as usual. Senior Jensen Lindsay will start and be the featured back in single-back sets, while sophomore Sam Fagerness will join him in two-back sets and sophomore Mac Fagerness will see work out of the slot. Tyler McCarty, a 5-10 senior, is also expected to get some carries. The defense, Fay pointed out, is the team's biggest question mark, despite the eight returning starters. Chase VanWyck returns to lead the linebacking corps, Byron Perz, a 5-9 senior, returns in the secondary, and Julian Rodriguez is back on the defensive line. "I'm excited about a lot of kids," Fay said. "We feel, right now, we could play 24 or 25 kids on a Friday. That's not to say we have studs or the best kids, we just don't see a huge drop off from the first teasers and second teamers."

do offensively is going to fit in his strengths,” Wollan said. “We know he can run the football, but we have to be able to throw the foot-ball, so that whole thing’s a work in progress.” Joining Johnson in the back-field will be a committee of running backs, including Nathan Anglin, Eric Braun, Michael Rose and Giovanni Corona. “We’ve got to find who can get it done, and it’s quite a competition right now,” Wollan said of the start-ing running back spots. Napavine transfer Keaton Underhill will see time at wide receiver, along with Brandon Davis, J.T. Yarter, Ryan Steepy and Brody Holcomb.

The two starters back on the offensive side are linemen Cody Beesley and Riley Edwards, with Colton Moorhead, Tyler Pallas, Tanner McDonald, Antonio Verderico and Chaz McElroy all competing for spots. “We’ve been pretty undersized (on the line) the last few years, and that has a chance to change this year,” Wollan said. “That has a chance to be a pretty stout front line, and hopefully they can evolve and get it done on Friday nights and get us the ability to move the football on the ground.” Defensively, Johnson — at safe-ty — is the lone returning starter, and he’ll be joined in the defensive backfield by Rose, Yarter, Steepy, Holcomb and Davis. “The real strength will be our secondary,” Wollan said. “We’re replacing three of them, but we’ve been really impressed.”

Braun, Cody Miller, Kolby Steen and Nick Fisher will move into the starting linebacker roles, and Hernan Nunez and Christian Sevilla will compete for time on the defen-sive line with Moorhead, Pallas, McDonald, Verderico and McElroy. “Our effort has been great. I think our goals are pretty simple, to improve all the way through the year,” Wollan said. “Obviously we’ve got a lot of young guys and inex-perience, but I don’t want to put any limitations on these guys, and I think that our goal would be just to have a shot at the end of the year, to get into something.” Note: The Evergreen 2A Conference is down to four teams, giving the Bearcats just three league games this season. W.F. West’s only home league game will be a Halloween contest against last year’s state runner-up Tumwater.

BearcatsContinued from Page 12

"Joey is probably a little more of an elusive runner, more the basketball type that'll distribute the ball," Whitmire said. "Then Joe has the laser-like focus, and brings a fullback mentality to the quarterback position. It's a push right now with how well both of them are getting the reads down in the triple option. They're both doing a nice job." Aaron Pullin returns to start at

left tackle, and Braden Eiland will start at center for the Tigers. Defensively, the Tigers have moved to a 3-4 scheme, with Brager and Monohon starting at inside linebacker. Pullin will move to defensive end, Kerner returns to start in the secondary, and Whitmire said Mitch Halbleib — at 6-foot, 180 pounds — has bulked up and stood out early on as an outside linebacker. Newcomer Nolan Wasson, at 6-2, 175, has also been a bright spot early on in the defensive back-field and at receiver.

"He's one of those kids that just stepped onto the field and just gets it," Whitmire said. Eiland, at nose guard, along with Kerner and Macoy Gronseth have all stepped up to fill leader-ship roles, the coach added. Centralia will open the sea-son with a nonleague home game against new-to-the-2As Rochester on Friday night, and won't play the first of its three Evergreen 2A Conference game until heading to Tumwater on Oct. 10. The top three teams in the league will qualify for District 4 crossover playoff games.

"Our varsity is really good but we get young really fast," Swilley said. "But that's how football works, health." Swilley expects a tough league that includes perenial football power Montesano, a good Eatonville team and an Aberdeen team that has an enrollment three times that of the Beavers. If there's one town that can crash the 2A party in the league, however, it's the defending league champs.

feeling. Our biggest challenge is how well we’re going to progress as a team. The fact the league is tougher makes it that much harder on us to progress.” Spahn said it will be a dogfight for those middle crossover playoff spots, a dogfight that Mossyrock would like to be involved in. They don’t get any bones thrown to them early, however, as they’ll have to face No. 2-ranked Napavine to open the season. But with plenty of skill receivers and a talented line, who knows how far the Vikings could go this year.

MossyrockContinued from Page 8

that made the State 2B semifinals, after a sophomore year in which he broke the school's tackle record. All four of the Pirates' starting line-backers return, with Young joined by Tyson Gray on the outside and Marcus Hampton and Isaac Ingle on the inside. Reece Wilson and Tyler Olson return at defensive tackle, Jack Herring is back at defen-

sive end, and Tanner Rigdon and Bryce McCloskey will be joined by Napavine transfer Phoenix Elwood — a 6-foot-3, 175-pound junior — in the defensive backfield. Young — who was standing out as an option quarterback by the end of last season — will be the key to putting points on the board. "We've got to do what we've got to do to get him running the football," Johnson said. "We just have to keep the ball in his hands. He's 15 pounds bigger, and he's tough." Olson and Ryan Goble return

on the offensive line, with Ingle — a sophomore — back at fullback. Reece Wilson, at tight end, is the only other starter returning for the Pirate offense. The line, according to the coach, will be mostly sopho-mores and freshman. "Two or three years from now we're going to have the same line," he pointed out. The team's strength, Johnson said, will be in its depth. "We can play 20 or 24 kids," he said, "and hope that condition-ing's going to be our strength."

to go so far as to say they’re irre-placeable, but this is a different group of kids, with different talent levels, and we’ve got to work and try to gel this group of kids,” MWP coach Aaron Poquette, in his fourth season as MWP’s head coach, said. “It’s a new time for these guys. They’ve got their opportunity to write a piece of the Morton-White Pass history and see what hap-pens.” Part of that development will come in the form of leadership. “They’re used to being led, rather than being leaders,” Poquette pointed out. “The eight seniors that started last year, they were excep-tional leaders on the field.” Zach Hanson, a 5-foot-10, 160-

pound senior, will take over as the team’s starting quarterback — and, Poquette added, assume some of the leadership roles. “He looks really good,” Poquette said. “He’s one of those kids that we think could have been a starter for a few years, but just kind of got stuck behind a guy (three-year starter Rylon Kolb). He’s a super heady kid, he understands what we’re trying to do and what his weapons are.” The offense this year will move away from the ground-and-pound attack from the past three seasons and move to more of a spread look. Junior Braden Elledge (5-7, 150) will start at running back, with Hanson throwing to big receivers Kaleb Poquette (6-4, 180) and Ian Louderback (6-2, 190). Tyler Moore (6-0, 265) and returning starter Jesse Eveland (6-2,

175) have claimed spots on the offensive line, with three spots still mostly up for grabs, Poquette said. On the defensive side, Eveland returns at defensive end, Kaleb Poquette returns at safety, Hanson returns at one cornerback spot and Matt Poquette — a 6-4 freshman — has stood out early on at the other cornerback spot, though the defen-sive front line is still up in the air. The team isn’t expected to roll through the regular season like is has the past few years, but the roster isn’t exactly lacking in varsity playing time. “We’re not where we were last year at this point,” Poquette said. “We’re not really a young team, and it’s not that we’re inexperienced — some of our younger guys got to play a lot of quarters — but they don’t have a lot of starts.”

The biggest benefit is the intended one: numbers. Thirty-eight kids have turned out for football, whereas Fluke pointed out that without the combination he’d be lucky to have 20 players at prac-tice. “It’s way different than I was used to,” he said. “It’s nice put-ting a second team out there. We can actually scrimmage 11-on-11, instead of 11-on-6.” Pe Ell and Willapa Valley each have six starters, on both sides of the ball, back from last year, which has led to some good competi-tion for starting spots. At quarter-back, Aidan Arrington and Jason Fluke are both in the mix, while Trevor Cooke, Kalen Jurek and Seth Flemitis are all expected to see car-ries at running back. “We’re just going to try to run a little power, and then just try to keep a balanced offense, and spread it out a little bit,” Fluke said. “A little of everything, maybe — start out slow, and put stuff in as the season goes.” Tyler Shepherd, Johnny Woods, Brenden Graves and Damien Redding are all big bodies that should fit well on the offensive line, Fluke said. “We’ve got the size, it’s just

bringing it together,” he said. “I just hope we’ll do alright.” On defense, meanwhile, Dalton Toepelt and Kalen Jurek are both back at linebacker, and Shepherd — at 6-foot-2 and 225 pounds — should excel at tackle. Cooke, Fluke and Flemitis, the coach added, have all looked good on the defensive end early on. The teams are still meshing and the players are still finding,

and fighting for, their roles, but the competition and combination has seen nothing but positive results so far. “I think it’s neat,” Fluke said. “Are we better? I can’t really say. But I can say the kids are going to have a little more competitiveness in them. Every practice they’re fight-ing for a starting spot, and that’s going to make them better.
