WHOLE SCHOOL NEWS

Letter from the Head of School DesignateDear Parents and Students,

This week I would like to continue my introduction of new members of teaching staff that will be joining us in August 2018. As I mentioned last week, some of these appointments are to replace some teachers that are leaving in July. However, many of these teachers will occupy new growth positions in the school.

Please enjoy reading these brief biographies of our new teachers:

Francesca Woodland – Primary PE Teacher

Francesca will be joining Bangkok Prep School as a Primary PE teacher in the coming academic year. She is a very experienced Primary PE teacher and also has experience of Secondary PE. Francesca is looking forward to building on the current PE department successes and is also excited about working in a new country and school. In particular, she is eager to coach and support the students in competitive tournaments and leagues; however she can say that she is most excited about the FOBISIA Games in Phuket! She is looking forward to her time at Bangkok Prep and her new life in Thailand.

Elizabeth Peacock – Foundation Stage Teacher

During her career, Elizabeth has chosen to specialise in Early Years education; working with children from the ages of two to eight years old. For the last five years, Elizabeth and her family have been based in Shanghai, China, teaching in a British International school. Previous to her teaching career, she was based in the West Midlands, England. Elizabeth and her family are very much looking forward to their time at Bangkok Prep and their new life in Thailand.

Elizabeth Seddon – Foundation Stage Teacher

Elizabeth is thrilled to be joining the Early Years department at Bangkok Prep later this academic year. Her teaching specialisms include supporting children with additional learning and behavioural needs, and studying early childhood development. She has experience of leading Early Years, Key Stage 1 and Phonics programmes. Elizabeth began teaching in her home town of Manchester, England in 2008, then moved abroad to teach in Malaysia in 2015. She is very excited about contributing to this and being part of the Bangkok Prep team.

William Fearon – Primary Class Teacher

William has been teaching since 2011. In the past he has worked in both Bangkok and Manchester. He has worked in both Key Stage One and Key Stage Two over his years teaching. After graduating with a Journalism and Broadcasting degree from The University of Salford, William wanted a job that was lively and interesting and found that teaching was exactly that! He has lived in Bangkok for six years and absolutely loves this vibrant and eclectic city. He is very much looking forward to teaching his new class at Bangkok Prep and working with a friendly team of teachers.

PRIMARY NEWS

Letter from the Head of PrimaryDear All,

Well done to Mr Callow (Primary: Head of Maths) and his team who took a fantastic team to the FOBISIA Maths competition in Vietnam last weekend. The competition was between 120 children from 30 schools (many more schools did not qualify for the event). Atty and Arjun finished joint third in the individual competition which means they are the third best Primary mathematicians in FOBISIA. An amazing achievement. Thanks also go to Mr Leverton who supported the trip and said “This is also the highest individual finish that Bangkok Prep has ever had in FOBISIA Maths, at any age level, and it has really put Bangkok Prep on the map as an academic school.”

In addition to the FOBISIA maths competition, in the same weekend, Bangkok Prep hosted the ‘Tournament of Minds’ competition which saw many schools visit our new campus at T77 where children were amazed at our organisation and facilities. Well done to all concerned especially Ms Shepherd and Mr Duffin for ensuring our children took part.

Thank you to those parents who attended my recent Parent Forums which completed this term’s Parent Forum schedule with the Head of Primary. It is a real pleasure meeting you all under these circumstances. A quick reminder, we do have an additional Parent ‘Swim’ Forum with Mr Stonehouse, Mr Cantrill and our Head of Aquatics, Mr Ferrier. The Parent Swim Forum will be held @53 on Monday 2 April (8.00 – 9.00am in Room 215). All parents are welcome to attend if they have any questions or would like to know more about our fantastic swim programmes or simply receive first hand updates. Mr Ferrier and Mr Cantrill will have all the relevant updates and key dates for all concerned.

I am happy to say that our online booking system is working incredibly well. Parents have expressed their delight about our new system for parents, especially commenting on how convenient it is. Our online booking system is ‘live’ and ready for you to book your appointments with any teacher that is directly involved with your children. However, the closing date for making appointments is on Sunday 1 April at 2.30pm. Please also be reminded that our ASA Programme has finished for this term and will begin again on Monday 30 April, after the Songkran Holiday.

Finally, I hope you to see you all at our Songkran Celebration Assembly @53 on Thursday 5 April (1.30 – 2.00pm in the Sports Hall). You and your family are invited to attend.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Best wishes,

Brad OwenHead of Primary

WHOLE SCHOOL NEWS

FOBISIA Maths ReportOur FOBISIA Maths trip to Ho Chi Minh City was exceptionally educational; and very fun. We reached Ho Chi Minh at 10: 30pm and slept immediately.

It started off with us doing the Maths Trail which wasn’t very fun because we made an early mistake. Then we had lunch which was good and did more Maths, which included the Countdown - where we came 2nd place with 29 out of 30. Then we did the house events and then had an early dinner before we slept for 8 hours.

The next day we woke up and had breakfast which was good. Then we did more maths including the individuals where we were one of the best schools with Atty and Arjun getting 3rd place and Ronit was key to making the ramp in the construction challenge. Bhudham was very useful in the relay because he was the speediest out of the four of us.

All in all, we had a great time which was capped off with our amazing achievements as we became Bangkok Prep history makers with the best results our school has ever had.

PRIMARY NEWS

BKK Prep Primary - Learning For Our FutureIn a world of ever changing knowledge and information, it can become increasingly difficult to predict what our students might need to learn in order to prepare them for the future. Technological advances, globalisation, scientific discovery and economic development all contribute to our rapidly changing world.

As educators, it is therefore very important that we focus our attention on those areas of education that remain constant, even in the face of significant change. Research (Sterling 2001, Maiteny 2002 etc.) has shown that core values and transferable learning skills, such as those found in the Bangkok Prep Life Values, are not only key in academic success but vital in creating the types of worldviews and perspectives that will contribute towards a brighter future for our planet and for future generations.

With this in mind, it is a real privilege to be part of a learning environment where positive values and perspectives are embedded throughout our school community. This is only possible thanks to the inspirational BKK Prep staff, who take it upon themselves to organise and deliver events and experiences that form the backbone of our values curriculum.

This past week has been particularly values focused, with the Primary students taking part in two fantastic events, focused on protecting our natural environment.

On Friday 22nd, the Eco Team organised a school wide ‘Earth Hour’, where each class competed to reduce their use of electricity and take part in a global effort to tackle climate change. This was a huge success and the event continues to be more and more successful each year. Thank you to Mr Cooke (Primary Eco Schools Leader) for coordinating this. Mr Cooke and the Eco Team continue to work closely with the WWF and the Eco Schools organisation to further develop our Eco Schools programme. Keep an eye out for our Primary ‘Green Day’ in Term 3!

On Tuesday 27th, the Primary School also welcomed Brendan Sing from the charity Shark Guardian. After a fantastic assembly, each year group had the opportunity to attend a workshop/seminar with Brendan, where we learned some amazing things about sharks and the importance of protecting this magnificent animal. This was a very valuable experience for students (and teachers) and we look forward to working more with Shark Guardian in the future. A special thank you must go to Ms Shepherd (Year 3 Leader), who organised the event, what a fantastic day. Another teacher was quoted as saying, “now that’s what education is all about!”

Thank you also to the parents who continue to see the value and support the school in its sustainability efforts. It is this level of values based education that separates BKK Prep from other schools and makes our community a very special place to learn.

Humanoid SupremeThe Year 4 children have had a busy week this week with two performances of “Humanoid Supreme” to large audiences. They did an incredible job learning their lines and singing the songs. Well done Year 4 you impressed everyone!

The show took place in the future, where the Silver Squad team were hoping to create the best robot in the world; the Humanoid Supreme. However, the Silver Squad soon realised that the robots they created lacked many human qualities such as care, individuality, friendship and having a conscience. Therefore the Silver Squad visit District 4CD to steal their caring qualities towards the world, District 4DC to steal friendship from pupils, District 4CC to steal their individuality in a talent contest and District 4AB to steal their conscience during class. Finally, equipped with these qualities the Silver Squad return to their robots to upload the qualities and make the robots Humanoids Supreme! Unfortunately the mission proves unsuccessful due to a lack of Wi-Fi, problems with encryption and the ever annoying Adobe flash player needing an update...

A huge thank you must also go to the wonderful Year 4 parents who sourced some excellent costumes for the children. Your support and help is hugely appreciated.

Another huge thank you must go to the TAs who worked incredibly hard putting the props and set together! Thank you so much.

We hope everyone who came enjoyed the show.

SECONDARY NEWS

Dear students, parents and colleagues,

Last weekend was very busy across the full range of student interests. Not only did we have students competing at the Model United Nations (MUN) but we also had the Tournament of Minds event with 500 students from five countries and just as many parents at our T77 Campus on Sunday. Both events were very successful for our students with Emmi doing very well at MUN. Our Secondary teams performed very well at ToM and brought home an incredible 5 trophies. Sixth Form student economists were also busy with a two day study-conference at our Primary Campus and our athletics teams’ 15 medals at BISAC Athletics rounded off a very busy weekend for our students. A special mention must go to Jayden who won the U19 1500m event despite being in Year 10!

This week has been a little quieter, although our House Penalty Shoot-Out kicked off (pun intended) on Tuesday as we aim to find our “House Penalty Champion 2018”. This is a coveted title amongst staff and students and there are many staff who will happily tell you how close they come to being the best. Year 10 Drama students then treated us to another evening of entertainment as they showcased their talents in their exam performance. There was a great audience, as many parents, students and teachers turned out to watch and support.

Letter from the Head of Secondary

This has been a long Term and I am sure many of you will be looking forward to your Songkran break. Next term is likely to be just as busy, especially for our Year 11, 12 and 13 students as they prepare for their external examinations in I/GCSE, AS or Advanced level exams. They are not alone however, as nearly 250,000 students from around the world will be taking the prestigious A Level exams this May and June, the numbers for I/GCSE are far greater. Successful students will be using the holiday period to relax, restore their energy levels and prepare for their exams. None will be relying on luck to do well.

Have a good weekend.

34th Thailand National Youth Games “Nan Games” Nisha Kijkanakorn attended the 34th Thailand National Youth Games “Nan Games” on March 23rd -26th. This is an extremely high level event. She represented Bangkok in the Breaststroke 50m, Breaststroke 100m and 2 relay events in which she won gold medals for ALL 4 events. Nisha broke the event’s record for both the Breast 50 and 100 meters and has set the new Thailand national record for her age group in the Breast 50 meters.

Nisha has always represented the School in an exemplary manner. At the recent BISAC swim championships Nisha attended purely to assist the School. She knew there was no personal gain for her and she had to take time out of her Junior Olympic training to attend. Nisha also chose to wear the School swimsuit for all events to assist the School in putting their best foot forward as an exhibition team. This was wonderfully heart-warming to the Bangkok Prep swim coaching staff.

Nisha is currently training with the Thai National Junior Olympic team and Bangkok Prep are extremely lucky to be able to count her as one of our own.

EconplusDal Student Grade Boosting WorkshopOn the 24th and 25th March Bangkok Prep had the privilege of hosting renowned YouTube Economist EconplusDal who brought his inimitable style to the Primary Campus. He is a teacher and Head of Economics with vast experience in getting students to top grades in Economics examinations through focussing on key core skills and exam secrets that unlock the door to exam success. On his first evening in Bangkok one adoring fan stopped him on the BTS to talk Economics and confirm that he really was here!

The two day workshop provided a dynamic environment to allow well over one hundred A-Level and IB students from different schools around Bangkok and some from as far as Vietnam to unlock exam secrets, hone core content and application nuggets which helped to provide students with the confidence and understanding of how to push towards the highest marks. It was a fantastic weekend which helped to build Economics expertise in challenging areas such as exchange rates, balance of payments and we even had topical examples and deeper evaluation of the potential trade war that is looming.

Students left the event feeling more confident and enthusiastic about Economics which will be vital as they continue preparations for their external examinations in just over two months.

Finally, a huge thanks to Ms. Genevieve, Khun Mai, Khun Aor and the Marketing, Events, Finance and Maintenance teams who made the event possible.

Student messages left at the end of the workshop

On Tuesday the 28th of March, the Year 10 IGCSE Drama students performed for their Component 1:Script Examination.

For the first time a Year 10 group put on a full play and performed it to a record audience of 50 people. We had been working on this performance since January, as one of the actors it was a very challenging but fitting task for our group. We worked extremely hard on making the play the best it could be by running lines, polishing scenes and coming in for weekend rehearsals. It was also the first time we have performed to an audience of this size and it was nerve wracking but exciting experience for all of us. We’re extremely thankful for our wonderful Bangkok prep community audience that came to support us and our Drama teacher Miss Hullock, for guiding us as well as tolerating us.

We’ve all learned how to work better together and with each other and personally I have learned how much we can achieve just by combining our efforts and having faith in each other.

Drama has taught us that an individual won’t be able to succeed without the teamwork of others.

BANGKOK PREP PRESENTS

Tuesday 3rd April

Senior Girls Finish as League Runners-up Some of the senior girls who have represented Bangkok Prep for several years in the Footballing arena, played their last game in a close and competitive league finale against Ascot.

After a convincing win over BCIS, it was between Prep and Ascot to win the league. The game was played to an excellent standard, with both teams producing some impressive passages of play. Prep enjoyed the larger percentage of possession and created chances in front of goal. They were unlucky not to convert and Ascot scored in the final minutes to secure victory and finish as league leaders.

The girls should be proud of their performances. Hopefully for those students moving on, they will continue to enjoy playing football for many more years to come!

This week we caught up with Magnum from Year 8 to ask him about his interests in technical side and the behind the scenes work of stage performances.

What are your main interests in the technical side of theatre?

I am really interested in the light and sound of performances and learning how to programme the lighting sequences from the control room of the auditorium.

How have you helped support the staff of the school so far in the new auditorium?

I helped with stage management of the Christmas Concert and House Sing Off that took place back in December. This involved me using a radio microphone from the control room to speak to people that were down in the back stage area and helping them with positions and lighting.

What do you hope to learn about during future shows?

I definitely hope to learn how to programme a lighting sequence fully as well as being able to operate the sound desk during performances, as I know that this requires lots of work and technical knowledge. Currently I regularly practise on the Audio Visual (AV) equipment that is in the control room of the auditorium.

Have you worked on any similar technical shows outside of school? Such as concerts or drama productions?

No, not yet. This is an area that I am very interested in progressing in to, once I have developed my technical AV skills and gained more experience in this area. I think that this would be a great thing to do.

Have you had any experience of Stage Management?

Yes, I helped with the stage management of the House Sing Off and Christmas Concert back in December, working from the control room of the auditorium and communicating with people down on the stage, before and during the performances. Also, I helped with the sound on the mixing desk at the recent Live from the Undercroft lunchtime music performances

Why do you think it is important that the technical side of a show works well?

I think that the technical side of stage performances is very important and I want to improve my skills and knowledge as much as possible, so that the performance is shown in the best way possible on the stage. I am definitely more interested in working behind the scenes than on the stage.

How do you think you can support the shows at school in the future?

By continuing to practise, learn and help out in the auditorium during other concerts and productions in the school. I want to continue to develop my skills on the lighting and sound desks. I have been practising using AV equipment for a couple of years whilst at school and hope that I can continue to learn and develop these skills to assist with excellent stage production of future shows.

On the final day of term Thursday 5th April, the Thai Department are pleased to invite the Secondary School Students to our first T77 Songkran Ceremony and Fair.

Students will mark this important event with a ceremony together and will then enjoy an extended break time.

A new Songkran Fair is being started this year and will be a chance for staff and students to try some traditional food and drinks, play some games and purchase some products.

The students have been designing, practicing and preparing for the Fair in their Thai Studies lessons. Please allow your child to bring some extra spending money to join in –all money made will be donated to a school charity.

Traditional dress and Songkran clothing can be worn on the day. We look forward to celebrating before the holiday.
