What is a Waterproof Jacket?Waterproof jackets (or hard shells as they are also known) are the final protective layer in your layering system.

The main difference between these waterproof layers is the fabric they are made from and the level of breathability that this will give you.

The level of breathability is dependent on your chosen activity:

• High aerobic activities (such as mountain climbing, hill walking etc) necessitate the use of highly breathable fabrics.

• Less arduous activities (such as day to day use, or lowland walking) require a less breathable garment.

What is a 3-in-1 Jacket?These jackets are part of the layering system. Layers are essential to keep you warm and dry.

A 3-in-1 comprises both a midlayer as well as a ‘hard shell’ or outer layer, which can be zipped together. This is known as ‘Interactive’ jacket, or marked simply as ‘IA’.

What is an insulated Jacket?Insulated jackets are best suited to periods of low exertion when you need maximum insulation, without the need for too much breathability and are suitable for extremely cold temperatures.

They work by trapping in warm air which is radiated by the wearer’s body, which then circulates and keeps the heat within the jacket.

Typically features:

What is a Fleece?Fleeces are a midlayer designed to keep heat in and cold temperatures out and are generally used over a baselayer and under a hardshell.

Fleece itself is a generalised name given to a manmade synthetic fibre such as polyester. Fleece can be a varied term, referring to a garment that feels soft to touch like a wool.

Although synthetics are used to created fleeces (usually polyester), some fleeces are made from a blend of natural fibres, such as polyester mixed with wool/cotton/nylon, as well as elastane (or lycra) for stretch and increased flexibility.

What is a bodywarmer or gilet?A gilet is a sleeveless vest designed to offer warmth and protection to your core, also known as a bodywarmer.

The sleeveless style allows total freedom for movement which is popular for a variety of activities. You can wear a gilet in numerous ways, as a casual day item, for hikes on autumn days over a long t-shirt or shirt, or combined with a fleece and/or jacket.

Zips or poppers are common features with gilets, so they are easily adjustable for venting qualities. Flat lock, or seam stitched designs means the bulk has been compressed so you have a packable shape.

For the maximum warmth, look for a gilet with a layer of insulation, either in the form of down or a manmade synthetic. Other options can include a gilet made from wind-blocking material, to protect you from cold without overheating.
