CANINE dNA COLLECTION drIvE

The Golden Retriever Foundation needs Canine and Human volunteers at the National Specialty to help with the DNA collection and paperwork.

The Golden Retriever Foundation, GRCA, The Broad Institute, and OFA need Canine volunteers for the National Specialty Canine DNA Drive. Cheek Swab and/or blood samples are needed to populate OFA’s DNA database. Blood samples submitted to The Broad Institute will be used for research in cancer and hereditary diseases.

The Golden Retriever Foundation has authorized funding to pay for the OFA submission fee for Golden Retriever samples collected at “mass collection clinics”. Through this grant from GRF, there will be no fee to the owners for submitting blood or cheek swab samples. There is no charge to donate blood to The Broad Institute.

A booth will be set up in the main show site, vendor area, on Tuesday, September 28, from noon to 4PM, and on Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 29-30 from 9AM to 4PM. In addition, we will be setting up during some of the Field events to encourage dogs entered in those events to participate.

Veterinarians, Technicians, dog holders, paperwork specialists and people to label samples are all needed for this continuing effort. We will be teaming up with the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals and volunteers from the Broad Institute for this effort. We will also be collecting samples for Optigen’s PRA testing.

** Special requests ** The Broad Institute would like to update any dogs that have previously submitted samples. They also need samples from any dog with cancer and/or hereditary disease. These samples are of the utmost importance as are those from healthy dogs over 5 years of age without cancer or hereditary disease.

Anyone able to help or willing to donate blood or cheek swabs from their dog is urged to contact Mike Lappin at [email protected] to let him know. you may download and print consent forms, to bring with you, from the Golden Retriever Foundation web site.

Even if you can donate one hour of your time you will be assisting with this valuable research tool. You and your dog can make a difference.

SwEEPSTAKES & VETERAN SwEEPSTAKESwednesday, September 29, 2010

Sweepstakes & Veteran Sweepstakes Dogs, Best in Veteran Sweepstakes .................. Teri PoetkerSweepstakes & Veteran Sweepstakes Bitches, Best in Sweepstakes ........................... Carol Hoare

GRCA SwEEPSTAKES GUIDELINES

The mission of the GRCA Sweepstakes is to provide a competition where breeders and owners can showcase their puppies and veterans. It was established to encourage owner/handlers to show their own dogs and to share the results of their breeding program, the potential of their young dogs and the longevity and structural soundness of their veterans with other breeders and exhibitors.

HANDLER: The handler of a Sweepstakes exhibit must be either the owner, co-owner, breeder or member of their immediate family as they are listed on file with the American Kennel Club as of the closing date for the show for which the Sweepstakes entry is being made. Immediate family is defined as husband, wife, mother, father, brother, sister, son, daughter or legal domestic partner. Step children and legal wards are also included in this definition. In-laws and grandchildren are not considered to be immediate family members. No other individual may take the entry into the ring during judging or check-in.

The following individuals are excluded from showing an exhibit in sweepstakes unless they are the sole owner registered with the AKC or co-own the entry with a member of their immediate family (as defined above) or a legal domestic partner:

• Any individual listed as an agent on any dog in any regular or non-regular class at this or any other show in the previous two years.

• Any individual with an Agent number including, but not limited to an AKC Registered Handler Number or Professional Handlers Association (PHA) number.

To avoid confusion or question, it is recommended that a photocopy of the registration certificate be included with the entry for a co-owned exhibit.

Disabled or physically challenged handlers are encouraged to show their own dogs and every effort will be made to accommodate them. Some things which might be done to assist them are: making sure the ring gate opening is wide enough for a wheel chair; making sure the surface is as level and smooth as possible; placing slower handlers at the end of the line or having them gait their dogs together; allowing someone else to push an exhibitor’s wheelchair, providing they do not handle the dog; making sure stewards and judges face a handler who is hearing impaired when speaking to them; permitting the use of crutches or canes.

Best in Sweepstakes Classes. It is required that the same person who showed the dog to a first place in a Sweepstakes class will also show the dog in the Best in Sweeps class. However, if that person should have more than one dog in the Best in Sweepstakes class, someone else is permitted to show the additional winner. That person should meet the handler definitions above. Only in cases where there is not another owner, co-owner, breeder, co-breeder or immediate family member available, should another person take the dog into the Best in Sweeps class. It is understood that there would be no financial benefit to that individual. Individuals who have an AKC Handler number, a PHA number or are listed as agent on any dog in the regular or non-regular classes may not show a sweepstakes entrant unless they are the sole owner registered with the AKC or co-own the entry with a member of their immediate family (as defined above) or a legal domestic partner.

2010 Rescue Parade Island Grove Regional Park

October 1, 2010, during the lunch break

The Golden Retriever Club of America 2010 National Specialty, hosted by Mile Hi Golden Retriever Club, will be held in Greeley, Colorado. The Rescue Parade, sponsored by Golden Retriever Rescue of the Rockies (GRRR) and Golden Retriever Freedom Rescue (GRFR), will be held during this event. This is a celebration held in honor of all the rescued goldens in the world, all the selfless volunteers that help them along the way, and the new caregivers that share their lives and their love with these precious beings.

You have received this form because you opened your heart and home to a rescued golden retriever. If you would like to participate in this event, you must fill out this form, include a high resolution photo (cannot be returned), and provide a 100 word (or less) explanation about how adopting your golden has changed your life. There is no fee, but the number of entrants is limited to the amount of time we are allotted for the parade, so please understand if you do not hear back from us. We would love to have everyone participate, but since that is not possible, we invite you to attend the parade and represent the special people in this world that believe in what we do.
