As a crossroads for travellers by sea and land, Kerala has developed as a repository of the best infl uences to have swept across the region.Consequently, Kerala benefi ts from a vast and peaceful cultural, religious and linguistic heritage, where religions, languages and literary traditions co-exist with, as well as enrich, one another. The harmony that prevailed in Kerala helped Malayalee culture to fl ourish, and to achieve the high standards of living and learning that have made Kerala a global example of progress.

The Keralese people have diligently adapted and fused old traditions and new values in virtually every sphere of human thought and endeavour, accepting and valuing other people and welcoming the best of their ideas, experiences and skills. This is the very essence of multiculturalism, a value for which South Australia is widely renowned, and of which we are justifi ably proud. The variety on offer at this Malayalee Kerala Cultural Festival represents numerous cultural and art forms, that

have been adapted both in Kerala and here in South Australia.I extend my best wishes to the Malayalee Association and Keralese community, and all its supporters, for a successful and enjoyable Kalamela Festival.

The Malayalee community and the broader Indian community are making valuable contributions to almost every aspect of life in South Australia. In its outlook, focus and purpose, the Kalamela Festival refl ects its origins: the peaceful, vibrant, creative and socially cohesive Malayalee homeland of Kerala, a place of astonishing achievement and commendable cultural inclusiveness. Indeed, your invitation to other community arts groups – beyond Kerala and beyond India – to participate in

Kalamela is itself a practical expression of the idea that, in a diverse society, all cultures and languages should be accepted, respected and valued. It is this practice that has made Kerala an exemplary place in India and the world. You come from a culturally and linguistically diverse homeland, and you share ideals which are the basis of our successful model of multiculturalism here in South Australia. With the Kalamela Festival, you have not only given a great cultural gift to South Australia, you are

also building bridges of cultural understanding, one of the cornerstones of multiculturalism.I wish you every success for the Kalamela Festival 2011 and best wishes for the Adelaide Metropolitan Malayalee Association and for the community.

The Journey thus far

....

A Kathakali performance is a major social event. They generally start at dusk and go throughout the night. Female characters are portrayed by men dressed in women’s costume. The themes of the Kathakali are religious in nature. They typically deal with the Hindu epics Mahabarat, Ramayana and the ancient scriptures. The dance form is very popular in UK and USA theaters for the last couple of decades.

The costume is the most distinctive characteristic of Kathakali. The makeup is very elaborate. It is so elaborate that it is more like a mask than makeup in the usual sense. The materials that comprise the makeup are all locally available.

The music of Kathakali has some similarity to the larger body of South Indian classical music (Carnatic); however the instrumentation is decidedly different and they are mainly percussion.

As a part of modernising, propagating, promoting and popularizing Kathakali, the International Centre for Kathakali at New Delhi, India has taken up a continuing project since 1980 of producing new plays based on not only

traditional and mythological stories, but also historical stories, European classics and Shakespeare’s plays. Recently they produced Kathakali plays based on Shakespeare’s Othello and Greek-Roman mythology of Psyche and Cupid.

Each character is instantly recognizable by their characteristic makeup and costume.

Kathakali is the classical dance-drama of Kerala, South India, which dates from the 17th century and is rooted in Hindu mythology. Kathakali has a unique combination of literature, music, painting, acting and dance. The word Kathakali literally means “Story-Play”. The dance form is a highly stylized classical noted for the attractive make-up of characters, large, elaborate costumes, detailed gestures and well-defi ned body movements presented in tune with the anchor playback music and complementary percussion. The theatrical art is considered to be a combination of fi ve elements of fi ne art: Facial expressions, Dance and enactment, Song/vocal accompaniment and Instrument accompaniment.K

14other nationalities which is a hallmark of a migrant rich country like Australia. Since then, KALAMELA has become one of the major Multicultural Performing Arts Festival in Adelaide. Considering the encouraging response received for this annual festival, in 2010 the event was rebranded to “Adelaide KALAMELA – Indian Festival of performing Arts”, to truly refl ect the landmark effect of the show on the Adelaide cultural map. One of the popular innovations brought about in 2010 was the marketing of the event via BASS to promote the show to a wider community.KALAMELA 2010 was “a wonderful explosion of colour and music, a feast for the senses and a fantastic

insight into the magical Indian culture”, says Janet Redman, a regular viewer of the festival. This year the much anticipated event returns to the magnifi cent venue of Her Majesty’s Theatre, bringing with it the promise of an exciting and enjoyable evening. We are certain that the dancers, the choreography of graceful movements, the music, and the sheer poetry found in the colourful costumes will captivate you.The child minding service at the venue has once again proved to be an absolute hit amongst the art lovers who would otherwise have had to stay away. AMMA would like to reaffi rm its mission statement to serve as a unique link between the AMMA and other communities

of Adelaide, whereby everyone gains through the exchange of their cultural identities on a common platform. AMMA also pledges that it will strive to stand by its pledge to ensure that the magnifi cent amalgamation of various cultures continues to evolve and grow from year to year.
