Prelude
Entrance Carol O Come all Ye Faithful 283
1. O come, all ye faithful,
joyful and triumphant!
O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem;
come and behold him,
born the king of angels:
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord!
2. The highest, most holy,
light of light eternal,
born of a virgin, a mortal he comes;
Son of the Father now in flesh appearing!
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord!
. Sing, choirs of angels,
sing in exultation,
sing, all ye citizens of heaven above!
Glory to God in the highest:
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord!
4. Yea, Lord, we greet thee,
born this happy morning;
Jesus, to thee be all glory giv'n!
Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing:
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord!
Apostolic Greeting
P: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy
Spirit be with you all.
C: And also with you.
Grace Lutheran Church Christmas Eve,
Prayer of the Day P: The Lord be with you.
C: And also with you.
P: Let us pray.
C: Gracious God, on this holy night we celebrate the revelation of your love
for us in the gift of Your Son, our Savior, Jesus the Christ. As Your spirit
inspired the joy and wonder of those who visited the holy child in the manger,
so fill us now as we come to find Him in the Word and the Sacrament; that the
awe and enchantment of this moment will move us to joy and we will always
witness to Your great incarnation for our salvation. In all the days of the new
year, may we also know the blessing of His abiding presence in our lives. We
ask this in the name of the child of Mary, Your Son, our Savior, Jesus the
Christ. Amen.
First Lesson Isaiah
he people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
those who lived in a land of deep darkness--
on them light has shined.
You have multiplied the nation,
you have increased its joy;
they rejoice before you
as with joy at the harvest,
as people exult when dividing plunder.
For the yoke of their burden,
and the bar across their shoulders,
the rod of their oppressor,
you have broken as on the day of Midian.
For all the boots of the tramping warriors
and all the garments rolled in blood
shall be burned as fuel for the fire.
For a child has been born for us,
T
a son given to us;
authority rests upon his shoulders;
and he is named
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
His authority shall grow continually,
and there shall be endless peace
for the throne of David and his kingdom.
He will establish and uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
from this time onward and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
Reader: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God!
Carol On Christmas Night 274 vs 1 & 2
1. On Christmas night all Christians sing
to hear the news the angels bring.
On Christmas night all Christians sing
to hear the news the angels bring:
news of great joy, news of great mirth,
news of our merciful king’s birth.
2. Then why should we on earth be sad,
since our redeemer made us glad?
Then why should we on earth be sad,
since our redeemer made us glad,
when from our sin he set us free,
all for to gain our liberty?
Second Lesson James
ho is wise and understanding among you? Show by your good life that your
works are done with gentleness born of wisdom. But if you have bitter envy
and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not be boastful and false to the truth. Such
wisdom does not come down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, and devilish.
For where there is envy and selfish ambition, there will also be disorder and
wickedness of every kind. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable,
gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or
hypocrisy. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace for those who make
W
peace. . . Submit yourselves, therefore, to God. Resist the devil, and the Devil will
flee from you. Draw near to God, and God will draw near to you. . . Humble
yourselves before the Lord, and the Lord will exalt you.
Reader: The Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God!
Carol On Christmas Night 274 vs 3 & 4
3. When sin departs before his face,
then life and health come in its place.
When sin departs before his face,
then life and health come in its place.
Angels rejoice with us and sing,
all for to see the new-born King.
4 All out of darkness we have light,
which made the angels sing this night.
All out of darkness we have light,
which made the angels sing this night:
“Glory to God in highest heav'n;
peace on earth, and goodwill. Amen.”
The Gospel Luke n those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus that all the world should
be registered. This was the first registration and was taken while Quirinius was
governor of Syria. All went to their own towns to be registered.
Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David
called Bethlehem, because he was descended from the house and family of David.
He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged and who was
expecting a child.
While they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. And she gave
birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a
manger, because there was no place for them in the guest room.
In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their
flock by night. Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the
Lord shone around them, and they were afraid with a great fear.
But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for see--I am bringing you good news
of great joy for all the people: to you is born today in the city of David a Savior, who
is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in
bands of cloth and lying in a manger."
I
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly army, praising
God and saying,
“Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace among those whom he favors!"
When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one
another, "Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this word that has taken place, which
the Lord has made known to us."
So, they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the
manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this
child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary
preserved all these words by pondering them in her heart.
The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and
seen, as it had been told them.
P: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you O, Christ!

Hark! The herald angels sing,

2. Christ, by highest heav'n adored,

Pleased as man with us to dwell,
Jesus, our Emmanuel!
Hark! The herald angels sing,

born to raise each child of earth,
born to give us second birth.
Hark! The herald angels sing,
“Glory to the new-born king!”
Nicene Creed
C: We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all
that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the
Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our
salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin
Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he
suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the
scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He
will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have
no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the
Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who
has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic
church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the
resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.
Offering
Offertory Prayer
P: Let us pray.
C: Gracious God, joining those people long ago who brought their gifts to
your infant Son, we now bring our gifts of praise, adoration and thanks.
Receive them as a response to the abundant blessings you provide us every
day. We pray that You are pleased with our offerings and that you will use
them to accomplish Your holy will. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Prayers of the Church
P: Let us pray for this night and our celebration of the birth of Jesus.
C: Gracious God, thank you for coming to us as the baby in the
manger. Jesus is a sign of your delight in us. He is your gift of grace
and love. Let the joy we feel tonight continue as we listen to His
word in the rest of the year, that we will follow this child faithfully
with our lives.
P: Let us pray for the nations.
C: Wonderful Counselor, bring your wisdom to the leaders of our
world, that they will govern all people with the peace and justice of
God. Bring down the tyrants. Overpower evil. Strengthen the good.
Bless those who seek to be a blessing to all.
P: Let us pray for the Church
C: Heavenly Father, your Son gave us the gift of the Church. As you
watched over and empowered his ministry, watch over and empower
the ministry of every Church. Always remember us here at Grace.
Make us light in the dark places of peoples’ lives.
P: Let us pray for God to be a healing presence with those who need him most.
C: Mighty God, there are many who are in need today. Inspire us to
reach out and minister as we are able. Guide and strengthen those
who are working to care for the sick, the lonely, the dying, the
homeless, the aged, the abused and the hungry. In this night, bring
them all your gifts of healing, comfort and hope.
P: Let us pray for all families.
C: Father, bless all parents and children with strong and healthy
relationships. As families gather in celebration of Jesus’ birth let
there be joy and happiness. Where there has been pain, let there be
the hope of moving on, or let there be healthy reconciliation and
renewal.
P:Let us pray for those who are traveling.
C: As you watched over and guided the Holy family’s travels, watch
over and guide all those who travel this holiday. Give them good
weather, infinite patience, and a safe journey.
P: Let us pray for ourselves.....All this we ask in the name of the child laid this night
in the manger, our Savior, Jesus the Christ.
C: Amen
The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will
be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our
sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and
deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours,
now and forever. Amen
