Page 1: Preliminary Task

Brief Information

With this preliminary task, I was ask to produce a front page and content for a school magazines with the use of Photoshop and how to manipulate images and enhance specific aspects/details within that school magazine:

1. Firstly, I had to research and analyse a school magazine; to know what is required for my school magazine.

2. Second objective was to produce a plan for my own school magazine; including layout (sketches) and notes (about the type audience, etc.).

3. Once I’ve finished 1st and 2nd stage; you’ll have to produce a school magazine (front and content page)

4. Finally, you analyse and feedback on what you have done in your school magazine.

Overall, this preliminary task will benefit me as it will help me towards my music magazine. As it helped me gain more knowledge about Photoshop and idea’s of what I could do.

Target audience: (age range, interests)Although it is a school newsletter you still have to think about your audience and how to appeal to them.

• My target audience is GCSE students , as we talk about GCSE results and prom, etc.

Possible title ideas: (masthead / title block)What is your magazine going to be called?

• Impreston Manor - with a play on the schools name.

Main image:What will be the focal point of your front page, remember, your work “must include a photograph of a student in a medium close-up”

• There is MCU (medium close up shot) of a student emphasising that it is student magazine.

Main cover line:What will be the main story?

• GSCE results – how well the school did.

Additional key images:What other images will be on your front cover?Remember, it is a school magazine.

• Image of the student cooking healthy food for meat free Mondays.• Picture of inside the prom- giving the audience a tester of what type of

pictures they are.

Additional cover lines:Other features, stories or selling points which will be inside the magazine, these need to be audience appropriate.

• Meat free Mondays? • Non-uniform Vs. Uniform• Interview with the head teacher • Review about the G&T (gifted and talented) people

Typography: (style, size, colour of copy)Think about the writing and the style of the writing on your front page.

• White to keep it neutral • Keep it modernised - text front but simple.

Background colour/image:What will be in the background, remember you don’t want to take the focus away from the main image.

• Green background with aspects of black around the edges. • Softened around the image so it can stand out more.

Technical considerations:(equipment, setting, props, costume, lighting)Be realistic and creative, think about what you have access to and how you could use it.

• The image will have good lighting and focuses on the student face with a medium shot.

Original image Manipulated image

I decided to use this image as it went with one of my secondary stories in my front cover

which was about the non-uniform vs. uniform. The changes I made from the original to

adjusted image; was I cropped out the green background with the quick selection tool,

magnetic lasso tool and the rubber (which I put on a blur affect) to make a blurred affect

around the outline, to make the edges look softer. Also, before this process I used the

rubber to remove some of her hair to make it look neater. Overall, I different have any

problems with the image.

What have I learned?

From this preliminary task it helped me produced a prototype magazine – font cover and content page. With the use of Photoshop I was able to understand the software, such as tools, manipulating images and so on. Therefore, I have a much better understand of the software and the stages of making a school magazine. Once I start music magazine, using this software will be easier as I have a much better understanding of how and what tools to use. Overall, I’m more confident after doing this preliminary task; however, my work will be more improved intensely.
