  • Preliminary Programme

„Cooperatives in the Focus ofa New Economic Policy“

“Genossenschaften im Fokus einer neuen Wirtschaftspolitik”

    Vienna,18. - 20. September 2012

In the International Year of Cooperatives.

Under the patronage of the Federal Presidentof the Republic of Austria Heinz Fischer.

  • Conference Topic

The recent financial, economic and sovereign debt crisis has drawn the public interest to the social oriented cooperative business model as an alternative to the exaggerations of the shareholders’ value and profit driven business models. The society expects a radical change of behaviour of the market participants towards the social dimensions of the economic life. During the crisis the cooperative organisations, in particular in the financial industry, have demonstrated extremely high degree of resistance due to their specific social oriented busi-ness model which restricts the possibility for speculative market behaviour. The cooperatives have been seen as a proper instrument for re-establishing the balance between the real economy and the financial sector that will enable to avoid crises of such destructive strength. In that sense the intensive usage of the advantages of the cooperative economic and social principles demands new economic policy in general.

The ICCS 2012 is in line with the topics, discussed during the first ICCS in Vienna 1963. That conference focused on the interaction between the cooperatives and the state at a time of domination of Keynesian concepts in the economic policy.

More than ever we need new cooperative approaches and future perspectives. Therefore also an analysis of the recent situation is necessary.

    Economic sciences and Law

The keynote speeches as well as the workshop presentations are related to various types of cooperative business activities, in parti-cular agricultural cooperatives, cooperative banks and credit unions, housing cooperatives as well as service cooperatives. The conference will enable an exchange of new theoretical concepts and their pratical implementation by scientists and practitioners of both economic and social as well as law sciences. The presentations on the second day of the conference are devoted to an analysis of the current state of the cooperative economy, these of the third day to future prospects.

  • Keynote Speakers

Prominent keynote speakers from different parts of the world will present their findings and practical experience and will take part in panel discussions. Keynote speeches will be translated into English/German.

    Workshops' Papers

Many scientists in the field of cooperative research and practi-tioners from cooperative organizations from all over the world have responded to our Call for Papers and have delivered papers dealing with different aspects of the Conference Main Topic. These papers will be presented during 27 workshops, which will be held either in German or in English. The workshops will focus on the four main sec-tors of cooperative business activities – agriculture, banking, housing and services, new cooperative establishments as well as corporate governance issues and will enable an in-depth look at the recent de-velopment in different parts of the world.

During the Conference exhibitions, information boots, new books presentations as well as film premiere will take place.
