1Multi-word verbs

Sometimes we can combine a verb with one or more prepositions to create a new verb. These verbs are called ‘multi-word verbs’ or ‘phrasal verbs’. Here are some examples you are already familiar with.I like to look at photos.I wake up early every morning.

1 Read the explanation and match the verbs in bold to their synonyms in the box.

Multi-wordverbs(1)come afterthemainverb inyourdictionary.Whenyou(2)look upaverb inyourdictionary,(3)look outformulti-word verbsandtryto(4)picksomeup.Thisincreases yourvocabulary.

2 Create ‘multi-word verbs’ with the verbs in the box and the prepositions up and down. Use them to replace the verbs in bold. Use a dictionary to help you.

1 Hey,don’tpainttheactor’sfacetoomuch,he’s playingapostman,notanalien!make up 2 Weboughtanoldhouseandwehopeto renovatearoomeachmonth. _________________________________________ 3 Weweretalkingaboutyouandyournewfilm became part of the conversation. _________________________________________ 4 I’mreallysorryyoutwoargued.Whydon’tyou callhimandtrytomake peace? _________________________________________ 5 She’saterriblesnob.Shereallydespises everyonesheworkswith. _________________________________________ 6 Youlookterrible!Whydon’tyoustop standing andhavesomethingtodrink? _________________________________________ 7 It’sverystrange:thepriceofCDsisincreasing, butthepriceofDVDsisdecreasing. _________________________________________

One word with different meanings

In English we sometimes use the same word with different meanings. This can create confusion, but if you write down these words and learn them, you will expand your vocabulary considerably.

3 Match each verb with its meaning(s). Use a dictionary to help you.

Verbs Meanings get changehouse go obtain move become receive affectaperson’semotions

4 Complete the sentences with the verbs get, go, move.

1 I____areallylovelypresentfrommyparents. Itreally_____________meandIcried! 2 Ineedto_____________awayfromthisnoisy areabeforeI_____________mad!Ihateit! 3 Ilovethespringwhentheweather _____________warmereveryday.

From noun/verb to adjective (3): the suffixes -ful and -less

In Unit 1 we learned the adjective beautiful. Underline the suffix that transforms the noun beauty into an adjective.Note that the -y changes to -i when it is at the end of a word. The suffix -ful means that something or someone is ‘full of this quality’. Look at the adjective hopeless: it ends with the opposite suffix -less which means that something or someone is ‘lacking this quality’.

5 Complete the sentences with adjectives that end in -ful and -less.

1 Hegavemealotofhelp.Hewas________. 2 Theworkcausedmealotofstress.Itwasvery _____________. 3 Icanfindnouseforthisgadget,It’s _____________. 4 Shehopesverymuchtopassthetest.She’s very_____________. 5 Haveyougotaninternetconnectionwithno wires?Imeana_____________connection. 6 Fillyourhandwithrice.Takea_____________ ofrice. 7 Wehaveaprobleminbigcitieswithpeople whohavenohome,_____________people.

QuestionMy girlfriend and I are visiting London for ten days. We are both students and we like going out. We’d like to have a typical night out in London. We love comedy, theatre, dance, music, but haven’t got a lot of money. (We don’t want to spend more than 6 or 10 pounds each for the show and maybe another 5 or 6 pounds for a snack.) The West End shows are too expensive for us. Can you recommend something for us?Bobby Brown

Best AnswerWhat about going to see a show at one of London’s Fringe theatres. One of my favourites is Camden People’s Theatre on Hampstead High St. They have a variety of shows from live music to traditional theatre. I like going there because the people are friendly and it’s much cheaper than the West End. I never pay more than five or six pounds because they do discounts for students. We saw a great cabaret on Friday night and then we went round the corner to Drummond St for a curry in a really good vegetarian Indian restaurant.Laura

Hi there! If you want a fun night, you could go to The Poetry Café in Covent garden. It’s easy to get to, get off at Covent Garden or Holborn underground stations. Amateur and professional poets read their poems. I went there last Saturday with my mates. We had a great night. It’s a cheap night out. Tickets only cost £6 and you can take part! I sometimes go there on Saturday mornings and have a cappuccino and read a book.Rick

Why don’t you try a comedy club? I like The Chuckles Comedy Club. It’s one of the oldest comedy clubs in the UK. It’s got a very relaxed friendly atmosphere. Saturday night is a great night out. I went there last month with my family for my birthday. We had a great meal and it only cost us £20 including the price of the show. (Tickets for the show cost £12.) We went by taxi, but the club is very near, about four or five different underground stations.Pete
