The 10th National Young Economist Competition
The National Young Economist Competition, the flagship programme of the Department of Economics, Christ University enters its 10th year. The prestigious paper presentation event aims to inculcate research culture amongst students and attempts to provide a platform for the intellectual stimulation of budding economists.
Through the years, undergraduate students from some of the most reputed institutions in the country have participated in Young Economist and have showcased their potential and knowledge.
The theme for this year’s Young Economist is “Financial Inclusion in India”
- PAPER PRESENTATION -
Team of 2 members. Time - Round 1: Online, Round 2: 2 hours 30 minutes
ROUND 1
ELIMINATIONS:
The first round is an online submission and consists of two components:
An abstract of 300-400 words should be emailed to [email protected] by 26 October 2015, 11:59 PM. The full paper should be sent to the same email ID by 10 November 2015, 11:59 PM.
The best papers will be shortlisted after scrutiny by a panel of highly qualified judges and will proceed to Round Two.

ROUND 2
FINALS:
The qualifying teams will be required to present their papers in front of a panel of judges. The time allotted to each team is 8 minutes which will be followed by a rigorous question and answer session by the judges for 4 minutes. Further 2 minutes will be allotted for cross questioning by other participants or the audience.
The PowerPoint/Prezi Presentation to be used for the second round should be sent to [email protected] by 16 November 2015
NOTE: All abstracts and paper submission should be formatted in Times New Romans font, size 12 and spaced 1.5 lines and justified.

Do you have what it takes to build your own economy? Take part at the auction and choose the resource that best fits your country. Be prepared to overcome challenges as the road ahead may not be easy. Emerge victorious from the battle of the economies.
Team of 3 members. Time - Round 1: 3 hours, Round 2: 1 hour, Round 3: 2 hours
ROUND 1
All the participating teams are assigned countries. Every team is given a fixed budget. Teams take part in the auction to bid for scarce resources within various sectors of the economy.
Pandemonium
ROUND 2
Mid-day trading begins where teams can trade their resources with one another depending on their needs. Every team must have a fixed set of resources by the end of this round. These resources would be essential to build an economy. If teams fail to successfully possess the minimum requirement of resources, they are automatically disqualified. Qualifying teams are required to make their economic policies depending on the resources that they have.
It is important to note that there may be fluctuations in the economy over the night.
ROUND 3
Teams present their economic policy and the strategies that they have hired to mitigate the crisis.

Learning is the lifelong process of transforming information and experience into knowledge, skills, behaviors, and attitudes. If you truly love a particular topic, you might have a desire to share that knowledge with others and here is the opportunity for you! So put yourself in the shoes of a teacher and get ready to share your pool of knowledge. Always remember, think beyond the syllabus!
One participant, Time- Round 1: 1 hour 15 minutes, Round 2: 45 minutes, Round 3: 30 minutes
ROUND 1
This round tests your ability of teaching economic concepts. Each participant will be given 30 minutes to prepare on a given topic. The participant will be given 5 minutes to teach the concept using a whiteboard and this will be followed by questions from the judges.

ROUND 2
Time to test your oratory skills! The 10 semi-finalists will be allotted new concepts to teach. They won’t be allowed to use any kind of props or diagrams and will be judged solely on their ability to explain the concept employing their verbal skills in just 5 minutes and will be followed by questions from the judges.

ROUND 3
FINALS:
Five finalists who cross level two, will have to face a greater challenge. The finalists will be asked to identify and explain an economic concept. If the participant fails to identify it, they will not be allowed to proceed further. Only 5 minutes will be allotted to teach the identified concept and this will be followed by a question -answer round from the judges. Each participant must use a creative method or tool to teach. For instance, you can express your creativity by using props / charts etc. But the use of the blackboard/ whiteboard will not be allowed.
Note: Teams are required to carry any equipment (video cameras, laptops etc) that they may need for the event. The organizers will ONLY provide chart papers and sketch pens.

How quick can you think? How creative are you? Can you think subversively? Can you convince your teammates to embarrass themselves on stage? Econthespians will test your understanding of core Economics principles and ideas, and push you to express them in all the noise and excitement of theater. This event is most suitable for those who have a flair for performance, and feel confident when being judged on a stage.
You will be given fundamental concepts in both Micro and Macroeconomics, and in a very short span of time plan a skit with your team that demonstrates the concept in a way that is both easy to understand and intriguing artistically. This event puts you in a high pressure situation with potential for hilarious, ingenious, and brilliant results.
Team of 3 - 5 members. Time - Round 1: 3 hours, Round 2: 2 hours
ROUND 1
Each team is given three basic Economics concepts, out of which they must choose two which they want to act out. Each team is given five minutes to decide which concepts to choose, and further 40 minutes to plan out and prepare two short skits, each depicting one of the concepts. In this first round participants will be required to show only basic Micro and Macro concepts such as the money multiplier, consumer surplus, etc.
NOTE: The teams will not be allowed to explicitly state the concept as part of their skit, but instead must act it out

ROUND 2
The two best teams selected from Round 1 will enter round 2, which is the final round of the event. These two teams will be given three Economics concepts, all of which must be acted out and incorporated into a single skit in a logical manner. The concepts that must be acted out in this round will be more complex and sophisticated than in round 1. Teams are given one hour to prepare before their final performance.
JUDGING CRITERIA:
Each skit will be judged on two criteria: how clearly the Economic concept has been portrayed and the creativity and innovativeness with which the team has approached their skits.

Now this is an interesting one for our future policy makers, an event that will put all your policy-making skills and ability to test. Not all policies are flawless. All you have to do is mend the gap in the given policy and bring to us your own. It’s easy to make claims but do you have what it takes to synthesize innovation with practicality?
Team of 3 members. Time - Round 1: Online, Round 2: 1 hour 30 minutes
ROUND 1
Each team will be provided with a list of past crisis situations across the globe and be asked to analyze the policies used by these nations in their crisis situation and amend the same to wit Indian needs. The team must submit an essay to be written in about 750-1000 words in form of a MS-Word Document to [email protected] by 10 November 2015, 11:59PM.
Plagiarism limit is 25% for this round. Anything above the given limit will lead to automatic disqualification of the team from the event.

Mend the Gap
JUDGING CRITERIA:

ROUND 2
One policy from the list of existing policies in India would be given to each team. On the basis of the existing knowledge on the given policy the teams need to reform and mend the gaps in the policy.
To mend the existing gaps in the policy the finalists would be required to give the Drawbacks of the existing policy, implementations and incentives of the reformed policy. Teams will have to present the reformed policy in the form of a five-minute long PowerPoint Presentation along with a hardcopy of the prior submitted essay.

Battle of Minds
Economists scout for the most stabilized policies that ensure market equilibrium and they seek this equilibria like the golden snitch. At the ‘Battle of Minds’, you will interrogate all that has been verified, testified and guaranteed through the depths of time. You will be expected to steer your arguments on the basis of facts, theories, evidence and formats. All this, with an intention to sound more reasonable to the audience to believe the assertion than to disbelieve it.
Team of 2 members. Time - Round 1: 1 hour 15 minutes, Round 2: 1 hour 15 minutes, Round 3: 1 hour
ROUND 1
ELIMINATIONS:
In this round, the teams will be given topics 8 minutes prior to speaking. Members from each team will speak for and against the motion, with the allotment of 3 minutes to each member. Each speaker will be judged individually and the teams with the maximum cumulative score will qualify for the next round.
ROUND 2
SEMI FINALS:6 teams will qualify for the semi-finals. In this round, each team will pit against one another in 1 on 1 knockout rounds, with one team speaking for the motion and the other speaking against the motion. The teams will be rewarded for extensive coverage of topics and penalized for conflicting opinions. Method of summative scoring will be followed. A 10 minute preparation time will be given to the teams prior to the face down.

ROUND 3
FINALS:
In this juxtaposition, the teams will choose to speak for or against the topic and will find themselves in a rebuttal from the other two teams. Each team will face a rebuttal in at least one of the three rounds. Topic for this round will be provided one day prior to the final round.

The first round tests your foundations of economics and how up to date you are using crosswords and pictures.

The third and final round consists of two elements: a puzzle to whack your brains and a nail biting rapid fire.

The Chanakya Gamble
Delve into the expanse of quirky creativity - amalgamating with the economics of the usual humdrum of lives! In the light of the legacy of unassailable theories, give a unique reflection of the echoing omnipresence of economics, can you?
Team of 2 - 3 members. Time - Round 1: Online Prelims, Round 2: 30 minutes, Round 3: 2hours 30 minutes
ROUND 1
The first round will be a written prelim wherein the people who have registered will be given a visual or audio prompt which they have to interpret with an economic perspective and relate to an economic issue or concept. The write up has to be within 250 words.
The prompt will be sent to participants after they register for the event.
ROUND 2
How good are you at connecting? How clear are you about your economic theories? Can you establish a link and present it if provided with two economic variables or concepts?

ROUND 3
Mastering a few basic economic principles can cast the mundane details of ordinary existence in a sharp new light. In the third and final round, the teams will have to do exactly that.
They have to observe a particular mundane aspect of life with an economic perspective and present it in an innovative manner.
As the teams proceed the tasks will be made harder by as they will be presented with choices. An economist always has to make hard choices and gambles. For the final round, the teams have to strategise beforehand and make optimum decisions like a true Economist.

Well, here we present you with a golden opportunity to showcase your quizzing talent. And to make yourself rich with it too. Enigma is back. This time, it’s bigger and better and in an all new avatar. Let’s tickle those brain cells, it is now up to you to “Pounce or not to pounce” on this opportunity.
PARTICIPATION CRITERIA:
1. 3 participants per team.2. Open for Undergraduate students and Postgraduate students from all disciplines. 3. Written prelims will be conducted and the best teams will be shortlisted for the finals. 4. Teams will have to call and register with one of the event heads.

Dharma Production Function
Ever thought of what Gabbar and Smith would bring to Raichand’s Diwali party? Or if Geet and Raghuram Rajan met on a trip to Switzerland?
Dharma Production Function gives you a chance to combine two very different interests. Use your bizarre Bollywood brainstorming abilities and apply them to real life economic scenarios, and go where your imagination leads you.
We present to you an online event with two components. In the literary component, you will have to rewrite a film by incorporating an economic phenomenon in it. The second component is visual, and requires a recreation of an iconic scene from the same film and applying the same phenomenon.

IMPORTANT DETAILS
1. Registrations prior to the Festival:
The Registration Form sent to you along with the brochure needs to be filled and sent in at the earliest. Last date for submission of the same is the 2 November, 2015.
All forms must be emailed to [email protected] and must contain the following information about every participant: Name Contact number Emergency contact number Email ID
Each college can be represented with one team participating per event. However, additional teams can be registered for every event but the points earned by these teams will not contribute to the overall point’s tally of the college.
2. On the days of the Fest:
Registrations will open 30 minutes before the flagging off of events on
day one and day two of the fest. All the participants are requested to be present at the registration desks during this time period along with their college ID cards. The venue for registrations for all events will be notified on arrival.
3. On the spot entries:
All events except for The National Young Economist, Pandamonium, the Chanakya Gamble and Mend the Gap will be open for on the spot entries.
The number of on the spot entries will vary from event to event and will take place on first-come-first-serve basis. College IDs are compulsorily required during the registration process. On the spot registrations will not carry points for the overall trophy but however participants will be awarded certificates and prizes in accordance with their performance.

Note: Each college will have to deposit Rs. 500/- as registration fee.

SCORING SYSTEM
All events will follow the given scoring system: Winners: 200 points First runners up: 120 points Second runners up: 80 points
Additional 10 points for confirming participation in an event (saying yes on the registration form)
The National Young Economist Paper Presentation and Pandemonium are the two flagship events for the Festival and will carry 25 points each for the Winner’s place.
