Preface This, the first supplement to Cochlear Implants International , contains peer- reviewed, extended abstracts of a selection of the presentations at the 7 th International Cochlear Implant Conference, held in Manchester 4–6 September, 2002. The conference was organized by the Manchester Cochlear Implant Programme, in conjunction with the British Cochlear Implant Group. There were more than 500 oral and poster presentations from delegates from 40 countries. Delegates from all the professional groups involved in the field of cochlear implantation allowed the interdisciplinary tradition of this series of conferences to flourish. New friendships and collaborations began and old ones were consoli- dated. We offer our thanks to the authors of these extended abstracts for their willingness to condense their presentations for this supplement. We are also most grateful to the cochlear implant manufacturers: Advanced Bionics, Cochlear Corporation and MedEl, and also both the Manchester-based charity HEAR (Help Ear and Allied Research), and the British Cochlear Implant Group for financial support in producing this supplement, and to Whurr Publishers. Further supplements of this kind, containing extended abstracts of work presented at meetings in the field of cochlear implantation, are planned for the future.
