It all sounds so simple in theory: Acarriage is used to move a certainmass straight along a path, i.e. performlinear motion. It has rollers running in a grooved guide rail. In practice, how-ever, this straightforward principle willsoon reach its limits. Reliability,productivity and economy – they alldepend on utmost precision!
Linear motion guides are found inmachine tools, machining centres,manufacturing robots, measurementand control systems as well as inmedical diagnostic scanners. Accuratestraightness and evenness of allcomponents is a prerequisite of theircorrect function. Other crucial factorsare accurate positioning, repetitiveaccuracy and wear-free operationunder high load, shock loading andshort reciprocating movements. Quietrunning is expected at high speed andacceleration as well as good resistanceto radiation and aggressive media.
These are taxing requirements. As thefield of automation is continuouslydeveloping, producing ever more lineardrives and guideways, these require-ments will continue to become yetmore demanding – for the componentsas well as for the lubricants used.
This brochure aims to provide thereader with an overview of lubricatingmethods and hints for practice. The choice of lubricant has a strongimpact on the service life and perfor-mance of linear motion guides. Theconsequence of a starved lubricationregime resulting in the development oftribocorrosion may be as severe astotal component failure. To avoid this,we will provide you with the right lubri-cant, which must ensure the following:

❑ Wear protection of the linearmotion guide components
❑ Noise-dampening effect at highspeeds

How lubricants must perform – and how to find the right one
There are different design types oflinear motion guides and ballscrews fordiffering applications and their varyingrequirements. Tribologically, one differ-entiates between sliding-contact androlling-contact guideways (table 1). In complex linear systems as are foundin handling gears, automation unitsand robots, a combination of guide-ways and drives are used to control inall three axes x,y,z. When choosing alubricant for such applications, thelubrication point that is the most diffi-cult under tribological aspects is takenas the yardstick. This may be, forinstance, a vertically mounted com-ponent, a ballscrew (carrying a higherload than the profiled ball guideways in machine tools) or the presence ofmachine swarf or coolants. Whateverdemands and influences exist, Klüberwill be pleased to assist you with lubri-cant selection.
A suitable lubricant and all the know-how needed for eachapplicationKlüber’s self-image is not solely that ofa developer, manufacturer and supplierof high-performance lubricants, butalso of a specialist consultant whoactively participates in the provision ofindividualised, customer-specific lubri-cant recommendations (offered as anadditional service free of charge). means that heat is dissipated from thefriction point and contaminants are reli-ably removed. NOTE: When lubricating linear motionguides with oils, please bear in mind
that the oil tends to flow from the linearguide system far more rapidly thangrease. To combat this eventuality a con-tinuous supply of oil provided to theupper part of the guide is advisable.

In the following text are some“lubrication hints” that may help tofacilitate your everyday work.
❑ For delivery of oils and fluidgreases via centralised lubricationequipment NLGI grades 00 and000 are normally used.
❑ Centralised lubrication is alsofeasible for greases K according toDIN 51825 of NLGI classes 0/1/2,however this should be discussedprior to use with the manufacturersof the lubricant and the lubricatingsystem to eradicate problems suchas oil separation or pumping resis-tance as found in long feed lines ofsmall bore dimensions.
❑ NLGI grade 2 greases can beapplied to the lubricating nipple of a linear motion guide by meansof a pressure grease gun. If thecomponent has no lubricatingnipples, the grease can be brusheddirectly onto the sliding surfaces of shaft, spindle or rail. If an even,thin grease film is desired, a sol-vent may be added to the greasefor dispersion. Klüber Lubricationcan supply ready-to-use greasedispersions of this type.
❑ Another option is continuousminimum-quantity relubrication bymeans of a lubricant dispenser.
❑ Special lubricant containers areavailable for miniature guides withlubricating holes – e.g. mini greaseguns.

make sense to combine self-lubricating plastic materials or abonded-coating with oil or grease
lubrication to improve emergency-running properties.

linear guide system should be operatedusing a long stroke length under lowload conditions to ensure optimumlubricant distribution and minimumfriction. The fill quantity is specified bythe linear motion guide manufacturerand is normally approx. 50% of thecomponent’s free space. For highspeeds, it may be as low as 30% of the available free space.

❑ We recommend cleaning the guiderail or spindle with a lint-free clothprior to relubrication.
❑ The relubrication quantity isapprox. 50% of the initial lubri-cation quantity.
❑ Frequent relubrication is desirable,i.e. application of small quantitiesat shorter intervals.
❑ If a different lubricant is used forrelubrication purposes, compatibil-ity with the original lubricantshould be determined. Greasesused for relubrication shouldmatch the previous grease’s basiccomposition (base oil type, thick-ener, base oil viscosity, NLGIclass). Please check with thegrease manufacturer.
Grease relubrication
This chapter provides information onthe factors influencing the lubricant lifeand relubrication intervals in your appli-cation.
In general terms, the lubricants usedfor linear motion guides are the sameas those selected for rolling and plainbearings. Tribologically, these compo-nents are closely related, howeverthere is one fundamental difference:Linear motion guides require far morelubricant than a rotating bearing. Thisis due to the fact that the lubricant in alinear bearing system is spread acrossthe guide rail during motion. Further-more, the beginning and end of eachstroke takes place under mixed-frictionconditions, which encourages wear.This makes shorter relubrication inter-vals necessary for linear movements.Intervals can be extended, however, ifimproved seals are used and if a highlyadhesive special lubricant is chosen.
Shorter relubrication intervals can be expected with extreme operatingconditions:
❑ High load C/P < 20; C = basic dynamic load rating in N;P = equivalent dynamic load in N
❑ Short strokes; micro-movements
❑ High temperatures > 70 °C
❑ Aggressive media or radiation
❑ Insufficient sealing
A general formula to calculate therelubrication intervals in linear motionguides does not yet exist. Factors likethe type of linear guide used, variationsin design, the quality of sealing andoperating conditions must be con-sidered, all of which makes the deter-mination of correction factors a diffi-cult task.
For this reason, Klüber Lubricationoffers used-lubricant analyses. Incooperation with the equipmentoperator, tests are performed in thetest bay and in the field, which allow an estimation to be made on thegrease service life. In the automotiveindustry, for example, comprehensivetests are conducted to find out if arequired service life of 15 years can be attained.
